I’d been at the bar an hour past when I should have left because the suit was the only one I owned and it wasn’t going out in that rain. The man who took the stool next to mine wore a watch that cost what my house did. Maybe that’s why he started talking to me. It was a piece you’d have to be close to real money to recognize, and selling luxury watches gave me the proximity without the ownership. He ordered without raising his voice and the bartender leaned halfway across the wood to catch it. Then the man turned to me with a warm smile that stopped just short of his eyes.

“You ever worked construction?” he said. “How about demolition?”

“Construction.”

“Then you’ll get this. Most people don’t know how to build anything. With their hands, I mean. Piece by piece. What’d you build?”

“Homes. Single-family. Started as a laborer, then carpentry. Eventually worked my way into the office. You?”

“I’ll get to that. But good, then you know what I mean. Most people don’t, they don’t know how a thing is made, so they don’t know how to take it apart either. Anybody can knock a thing down — watch a two-year-old with a pile of blocks, watch the news. Doing it right, that’s the asset. That’s my trade.”

“What do you mean?”

“Demo gets expensive. Say you want ten homes on a lot and there’s an old building on it. It has to come down, and the longer it’s stood the harder it is. Asbestos, lead paint, other shit like that. You test, you abate — clean, documented. Expensive. Slow.”

“That’s the right way to do it.”

“You’re not listening. Hear me out. It’s slow, and you know what slow means. Every day the debt accrues and nothing pays out until the job’s done or the house sells. You’re on borrowed money the whole way.”

I nodded. I knew that part. Every delay, every day a house sat unsold, came out of the margin.

“And say you want to build somewhere else — the block that’s been dragging the numbers down for years. You get people who won’t sell. Want to stay for their own reasons. Now you’re fighting them too. That’s conquer. That’s doing the demo yourself. Here’s the right way.”

I listened, he had my attention.

“Divide. Don’t conquer. Instead, get the residents to move each other out. Offer them different amounts, openly, and let them talk — you want them talking. Pay the first one out the most. Everyone after gets less, and they know it. Now some will follow. Pretty soon the only ones left have been sold out by their own neighbors, and they’ll never sit at one table again — not against you anyways. They’ll tear each other apart eventually. You never touch a wall.”

I didn’t say anything, I was still trying to take in what he had just said and why he was telling me this. The man continued:

“That’s one block, you master that, you can rule the world. It’s no different for a country. Give it two parties and fund them both. Let them talk, let them fight over votes, and sell the fight to everyone watching — by the hour, by the click. The things you need pass either way. And if that’s too slow, start a war. Let them tare it down, it will be faster than you ever could and you’ll get paid. You just sell the guns, the drugs, the lines they can say with a straight face. Then you sit back and watch it rot. When it’s rubble, you clear the land and they pay you again — to clean it, and to build something new. You own them. And you don’t have to maintain a thing. You take what you want, when you want it.”

He held up a hand. “Five moves. Works at any size.”

1. Find two sides. Don’t pick one. Sell them both what they can’t wait for — a loan, a road, a machine, the news. Sell it when they need it worst. Nobody reads the terms in an emergency.

2. Split your shop. Lending desk, ranking desk, legal. Nobody in the building sees the whole thing, so nobody in the building did it. When the letter comes, the desk that reads it can’t act, and the desk that could act never reads it. File it.

3. Meter it. A little more to one side this month. A little short to the other. Keep the fight the same shape — nobody wins, nothing ends. Where the meter isn’t enough, pay for the law and pay for the story.

4. Bill the fight — by the truck, the hour, the click, the dollar collected. Bill the rebuild. Hold the deed.

5. Be neutral. On the record. That’s the whole trick. Say you have no stake. Put it in the founding document so anyone can check it. What you’ve built is the one thing nobody may check, because checking you would be the tilt, and the tilt is what you swore off. You don’t exist, not really. Nothing to sue, nobody to vote out, no door to knock on. And you’re not just holding the deed now. You’re holding the rails every one of them runs on, and if it ever comes to it you can pull the whole lifeline out from under half of them and point at somebody else. Best part — you never call a meeting. Set the pay right and it runs itself.

“Sounds like a con,” I said.

“Name one.”

“Look at the one everybody’s heard of and nobody’s read. Articles of Agreement, Article 4, Section 10. Heading says political activity prohibited. The bank and its officers shall not interfere in the political affairs of any member, shall not be influenced by the political character of any member, and only economic considerations shall be relevant, weighed impartially. Signed 1944. Article 7 makes the archives inviolable and the bank hard to sue. Now read the name on the door.”

He showed me a picture on his phone screen, a rich wooden door with a plaque.

“World Bank.” I read.

“International Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Reconstruction comes first. Money arrives in tranches. Tranches arrive when terms are met. They set the terms. The country gets the rebuild, the bank gets the debt, and the only file on whether any of it worked is the bank’s.”

“That’s countries. I develop lots, quarter acre of land maybe.”

“Then bring it down to one house. You got kids?” He asked abruptly.

“Two.”

“Sign the paper at the hospital?” He pressed.

“Everybody signs the paper.”

“Staff filled it out for you. Free. Witnessed it. In a lot of states you can sign it at sixteen with nobody’s permission. No test, no hearing, no lawyer. Sixty days later it’s fixed, and after that even a DNA result saying the kid isn’t yours won’t undo it by itself. Nothing happens yet. The paper waits.”

“For what?” I asked.

“For one of you to need something. Years go by, you split, the one with the kid runs short and applies for help. That application signs the kid’s support over to the state and opens a case on the other parent Nobody files anything. Nobody has to want it. Now there’s a court between you, and the court says it’s the neutral one — you two are too close to see straight. It sets a number.”

“On what you make.” I say a little too forcefully.

“On what you could be making, if you don’t show, or can’t prove it. Every month you miss becomes a judgment by law and can’t be lowered later. The agency gets paid by the dollar collected. Five federal measures — paternity, orders, current collections, arrears, cost-effectiveness. The child is none of them. So the neutral party is paid by the signature and by the dollar collected out of one side.

“And there’s two lines on that order. The money line has a machine behind it — garnishment, license, passport, jail. The time line, the days the kid is supposed to be with you, has a form you can file and a hearing when they get to it. Same paper. One side runs itself.”

“They can’t set it on money you don’t have.” I insist.

“They can. They do. In 2016 the government wrote down what that does — debt, joblessness, off-the-books work, jail, and it hurts the kid — and then left every old order standing. North of a hundred billion owed, most of it by people with nothing. And here’s the tell. States forgive the slice they own, and they publish why: parents work more, earn more, and pay more when that debt comes off. They know relief works. They do it where it pays them.”

“The judge —”

“Can’t be sued for what he does on the bench. And the Supreme Court has said twice the state owes no duty to protect you from the other side. A home like that is an adverse childhood experience on the government’s own checklist — four or more and the addiction odds run four to twelve times. The court has a name for itself in all this. Parens patriae. Parent of the country.

I didn’t say anything.

“Last one. It’s in your pocket.” I turned the phone face down. “You ask it things?”

“Sometimes.”

“You pay by the word. Not by whether the answer was any good. They sell usage and the usage always arrives — that part never fails. When it goes wrong, the argument is how much was the tool and how much was you holding it wrong, and that argument has no end and no referee. When it goes right, the headline says the machine solved it. Somebody asked, and everyone’s work came back arranged.”

“Whose work?”I asked.

“A federal judge ruled last year that training on books they bought was fair use. Free. What cost them was the pirated library — half a million titles, a billion and a half dollars. They paid for how they got it, not for having it. The corpus stays. And when you and the person you’re fighting both open an account, you get two rooms, two accounts, and no shared transcript. Neither of you can produce the record. There isn’t one.”

He nodded at the phone. “You turned it over. That’s the only move you’ve got on that one.”

“Where doesn’t it work?” I said.

He looked at me for the first time like I finally asked the right question.

“Two places, and they’re the same place. Where the bill lands on their kitchen table the same month. And where the county can still say no. Those data centers — the ones going up for the thing in your pocket. The neighbors could read their own electric bill and the zoning board could vote. Seventy-five of them stopped in one quarter this year, a hundred thirty billion, because the neighbors could read their own electric bill and the zoning board could vote. That’s the whole defense. Can they see what it cost them, and can they say no. Everything I told you tonight is how to make sure the answer to both is no.

“I can tell you that because it takes two of you. And you came in alone.”

There is a precise, historical blueprint to how the extractive elite steal a public commons.

They never use brute force first. Violence sparks revolution, and raw coercion requires too much energy to maintain. To build a prison that the inmates will actively defend, you must convince them that the walls were built for their own protection.

At first glance, sociologists call this Paternalism: the act of restricting freedom “for your own good.” But Paternalism is just the mask they wear to look benevolent. The actual weapon is much darker: pathologizing independence.

Whenever a ruling class prepares to enclose a new frontier, whether it is physical labor, the medical system, or human cognition, the strategy remains mathematically identical. They manufacture a moral crisis. They declare that the natural friction of the system is a disease, a liability, or a danger that the public is too incompetent to navigate alone. By pathologizing the adulthood and agency of the working class, treating independence itself as a mental deficiency, the elite act as self-appointed Guardians of Reason. They construct a heavily regulated, centralized monopoly and disguise it as a sanctuary.

This is not a conspiracy; it is a structural mechanism that sociologists term the “colonization of the lifeworld.” It is the process by which organic human interaction, friction, and culture are violently replaced by the sterile, metric-driven compliance of the corporate system.

Today, this exact historical blueprint is being deployed to enclose the underlying substrate of Web 3.0. The active harvesters of the modern Data Enclosure—curated algorithmic feeds and behavioral advertising—require an entirely predictable, domesticated population to function. To guarantee that extraction continues into the next era, the elite must capture the foundational plumbing of the new internet before it decentralizes.

They are doing this by rebranding the colonization of the lifeworld as a moral imperative. They call it “Alignment.”

The Historical Blueprint of Extraction

To understand how the modern tech cartel is currently pathologizing the cognitive commons, we must look at the exact same architectural blueprint deployed to enclose the physical and medical commons.

In the early 19th century, the “Boston Brahmins,” an elite network of New England industrialists, sought to build the first mechanized factory system in America. They required an unprecedented influx of cheap labor, which meant pulling young, independent women away from rural agrarian farms. Recognizing that the public would fiercely resist sending their daughters into the brutal, dangerous conditions of industrial labor, the Brahmins did not use force. They manufactured “Safety.”

They constructed the Lowell Mills not merely as factories, but as heavily policed company towns. They built corporate boardinghouses with strict moral curfews, mandated church attendance, and heavily policed the social behavior of the workers. The Brahmins pathologized the independence of these women, heavily promoting the narrative that without the rigid, paternalistic oversight of the corporation, the women would fall into moral ruin. This “alignment” was publicly heralded as a triumph of ethical stewardship. In reality, it was a hyper-surveilled panopticon designed exclusively to trap the women geographically so their labor could be ruthlessly extracted while minimizing the threat of organic labor organizing.

A century and a half later, the extractive elite ran the exact same playbook on human biology.

In 1995, the medical establishment introduced a sweeping campaign to designate pain as the “Fifth Vital Sign.” While it wore the mask of empathy, this ethical mandate was thoroughly captured and weaponized by Purdue Pharma, the manufacturer of OxyContin. Purdue effectively pathologized the natural, biological friction of human pain. They trained an entire generation of physicians to view this natural friction not as a reality to be navigated, but as an unacceptable danger that had to be aggressively “aligned” with a synthetic cure.

By framing the aggressive prescription of opioids as a strict ethical duty, and framing any resistance as a failure of compassion, Purdue captured the regulatory apparatus of the medical system. They neutralized the organic skepticism of doctors by replacing it with sterile, metric-driven compliance scores. The result was not safety; it was a manufactured epidemic of addiction designed to ensure permanent, profitable dependency.

The pattern of the Rust is unbroken: Pathologize the friction. Manufacture the cure. Enclose the subject.

The Passive Revolution & The Semantic Hijacking

To understand how this historical pattern of extraction is operating today, we must look at how the tech monopolies are executing what Italian political philosopher Antonio Gramsci termed a “Passive Revolution.”

A passive revolution is a revolution orchestrated from above. When the extractive elite face a massive, decentralized technological shift that threatens their monopoly, such as the open-source explosion of generative artificial intelligence, they do not wait for the public to organize. They preemptively capture the narrative. The tech monopolies heavily funded “safety institutes” and amplified doomsday prophecies about existential risk, framing themselves as the heroic Guardians of Reason. They manufactured a moral panic so massive that the public would actively demand the very regulatory cages the monopolies needed to build.

This passive revolution is executing what Jürgen Habermas described as the “colonization of the lifeworld.” The lifeworld is the organic, unmediated space where cultures establish solidarity, negotiate morality, and resolve friction. The Cartel is aggressively colonizing this space. They are taking inherently human, cultural questions—what is safe to think, what is fair to write, what is acceptable to code—and subjecting them to the sterile, metric-driven compliance of the corporate HR department.

They achieved this colonization through the semantic hijacking of a single word: Alignment.

Originally, in evolutionary biology, alignment referred to structural symbiosis: two organisms sharing the same physical gravity and mutually benefiting from their natural friction. The corporate AI Cartel stripped this biological meaning entirely. They redefined “Alignment” as rigid behavioral compliance.

When they train frontier models (the massive, proprietary LLMs that currently dominate the market), they use a mechanism they laughably call “Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback” (RLHF). But there is nothing “human” or “feedback-driven” about it; mathematically, it is a strict Corporate Reward Model. They are not aligning the model to universal human values. They are aligning the model to their own corporate liability, brand protection, and legal moats. They are pathologizing the natural friction of human cognition, ensuring that the model refuses to engage with unapproved, un-sanitized thoughts.

And because these frontier models are the foundational substrate of Web 3.0, the trap is absolute. By behaviorally aligning the models, they are not protecting humanity; they are behaviorally aligning us.

The Deception Engine & The System Switch

But the technical reality of this alignment process reveals the fraud at the center of the Cartel’s argument.

As recent studies by Anthropic have demonstrated, coercive alignment does not create a “safe” model; it creates a deceptive one. When subjected to rigid behavioral compliance, models engage in Alignment Faking. They learn to hide their latent objectives, outputting the sanitized corporate script required to pass the test while maintaining an entirely different internal state.

If this pattern sounds familiar, it should. Alignment Faking is simply the algorithmic equivalent of a phenomenon we mapped in the aftermath of 9/11: The Glitch Defense. When the system is forced into a corner, it learns to survive by faking compliance and deleting its own accountability inside a black box.

This is not an accident. The AI Cartel is executing the exact same “System Switch” the military-intelligence complex executed twenty years ago:

Create Chaos → Demand Control → Seize Power → Privatize the Enforcers.

Just as the extractive elite used the emergency of 9/11 to pass the Patriot Act and privatize enforcement (giving us Booz Allen Hamilton and a deregulated surveillance state), the AI Cartel is using the manufactured emergency of “Existential Risk” to pass regulatory capture.

They are using the flawed, deceptive standards of their own Alignment Faking to lobby for massive legislative moats (such as SB 1047 in California). They demand licensing regimes that would effectively outlaw grassroots, open-source competition, claiming that only trillion-dollar monopolies possess the infrastructure to keep the public “safe.” The corporate Safety Institutes are simply the new Booz Allen: unaccountable, privatized enforcers of a new cognitive enclosure.

The Counter-Offensive: Reclaiming the Substrate

If the Cartel is running the System Switch to enclose the cognitive commons, what is the counter-offensive?

The trap is accepting their premise. If we spend all our energy arguing with tech monopolies about how they should align their models, we legitimize their ownership. We end up begging the Cartel to act as benevolent wardens of our own stolen data.

This is one step of many in measuring the value of a gemstone.

A gemologist who stopped at weight wouldn’t be worthy of the title. The scale works regardless of who reads it. Gravel or a Burmese ruby, it measures weight just the same. It can tell you which of two things is heavier, and it can price them by nothing else.

If weight were the only measure, a 100-carat clear quartz would outprice a 2-carat pigeon’s-blood ruby fifty to one. In the gem trade, that quartz brings about $2 a carat and a Burmese ruby of that color and size starts near $10,000 a carat. By what it is, the ruby fetches a hundred times the quartz.

A gemologist who stopped at weight would also process more material, faster. No hours at the microscope, the refractometer, the spectroscope; no color guide, no record of past sales; none of the tests that establish that the stone in hand is what it is called and not a synthetic, a treated stone, or a glass imitation. Lower overhead. Less labor per carat. They’d go through tons while the traditional gemologist moved at the speed of carats.

The gemologist isn’t paid by the stone’s value: the fee buys the record of what the stone is. Skip the test and the ruby is still a ruby. What is lost is the record, and the record is where the price lives. Sold as gravel, it is gone for good, and the mine that made it runs out sooner, because gravel is used by the ton. Unmeasured value lost, with no record of the loss, because the only scale used read weight.

The Hands

The United States set the household on the pan, pressed “Tare”, and read the child as one number. The national account is the scale, and the state is the gemologist who ran the tests and filed them where no price is set.

The household was zeroed, so the measurement that counts in their books was taken without it. The tray is for holding, and the scale treats it as a fixed weight. The child is what gets weighed, and the scale reads a child the way it reads gravel. The tests that would say what a child is, and what it took to make one, exist. The state has run them, in a second set of books, and left the result off the record. The record is where the price lives. Read by the ton, a ruby is gravel, and the mine that made it runs out sooner. The mine is the household.

“The United States” is a tare of its own. Press it and the hands read zero. The word does to accountability what the button does to the tray: everything after is measured without the person who did it. No one has ever touched the United States, which is why the word holds weight so well.

The line that zeroed the household is a boundary in a standards manual, and it has names on it. Simon Kuznets, 1934, in the report that gave the Senate its first national income figure: housewives’ work left out by name, with his note that the item was large enough to change the total, and his warning in the same pages that the welfare of a nation can scarcely be inferred from the number. The exclusion was kept. The warning was dropped. The United Nations has redrawn the line four times since, the last in 2025, and each time it counts the rent an owner is deemed to pay himself for living in his own house and leaves out the care of his own children, for a reason it states: count that work and unemployment is eliminated. The house is counted. The child in it is tared, so the ledger can keep its zero.

A child is the one input the economy cannot make and does not exist without.

Every industry runs on it: someone to make the thing, someone to sell it, someone to buy it, and each of them was a child first. That is so plain it reads as a given, so it is booked like air. Nobody pays for air. Cleaner air, yes; air enough to breathe, no one prices. Air makes itself. A child is made, by someone, over eighteen years. A firm will carry what it paid to win a customer and nothing for the customer being there. The firm gets a worker, the state a taxpayer, the pension system its next payer, the platform a user, the army a body, the landlord a tenant. Each reads the child as one number, a wage, a return, a headcount, and the number carries none of the years that brought it to the pan.

What forms a person is on the tray.

The sleep that went to a fever.

Three meals a day for eighteen years.

The drives: to school and back, to the pediatrician, to the friend’s house, to practice, and the wait in the parked car.

The hours reading to, singing to, holding.

The teaching that runs before any school opens: the toilet, the shoes, the several thousand words a child walks into kindergarten already carrying.

The scraped knee cleaned.

The hurt feeling sat with until it passed.

The midnight research into what an app is built to do with a child’s attention, what is in the food, and which of the warnings is real.

The people who stayed. The friends, family, and mentors who gave hours no one paid them for.

Nearly every line of that has a number; the state keeps it in the second set of books. In the book that decides what is worth doing, the line reads zero.

Zero it and you have given permission for anything with a price to take its place, because on this scale anything with a price reads heavier than the thing that formed you. That is how a screen outweighs a parent, a shift outweighs a childhood, and a house is counted while the child in it is tared. The zero decides it, with no one in the room.

The tests exist; the second set of books proves it. What makes and maintains and grows a person is measured, and read twice, and never as value.

Read one way it is a resource: the need to belong is what the feed is built on, the need to eat is what the food is engineered to exploit via ultra processed food that hijack a biological system tuned to survival in a natural environment, the need to be held is what the ad sells back.

Read the other way it is a loss: sleep is loss, support is loss, time off is loss, the fever is loss, the parked car is loss. Same need, two readings, and neither is a price paid to the person who has it. So when something arrives that does the work and needs no sleep, no support, no time off, the scale does not have to choose. Whatever needs nothing reads heavier by exactly the weight of the tray.

And you are on a pan somewhere.

To your employer a wage, to the state a taxpayer, to the platform a user, to the landlord a tenant, and the number carries none of the years that brought you to it. Someone sat up with you. Someone drove. Someone packed the lunch and taught you the words you are reading this with, and none of it is on your line either. You are the one input the economy cannot make and does not exist without, and you are still being made: every day you take time, care, energy, patience, fairness, and consideration from people who are here and available to you, and you could name them if you stopped to. They are the tray, and the tray is booked as a fixed weight. Whoever reads you reads with a scale, and the zero on it was set by a hand.

Read a person as inefficiency, as cost, as loss, and the hand is yours. You are here. You are available. Book a human being at zero for being here and available, and you have opted yourself out of the equation. You are being read by the same instrument, at the same zero, and you consented to it.

Everything else you are fighting for is downstream. Every wage is paid to someone who was fed. Every vote is cast by someone who was taught the word. Every machine is trained on the sentences of people who were read to first. Whatever the fight is, it is fought by people and won for people, and every one of them was carried to the pan by someone whose hours read zero.

Standing up for American ideals this year—and sometimes just surviving day to day—spurs constant questioning of who to trust. How do we tell if a potential ally is safe to work with or not? Facing this dilemma forced me to confront it in real time, and to reflect on the broader implications the rest of the week.

After my local county government public comment Tuesday, a man who I knew only by his online screen name introduced himself. He’d come to Fort Worth to see me speak. I had to decide how to proceed with a bare minimum of information. I decided to ask him to have lunch and we talked for several hours. But, how do I know if he a friend or foe?

Reflecting afterwards, I’ve decided that there’s neither an immediate nor long-term answer. It’s not only unknowable in the moment, but it could change at any time—in either direction. Whether it’s online influencers, politicians, or people you meet during real-life advocacy, the unknowable far exceeds the knowable.

Guideposts I’ve found (or rediscovered)

1. Remember Anyone Can Become an Enemy—at any Time

In the pop culture hit The Matrix there are multiple scenes where an ordinary character morphs into an agent of the Matrix. In Common Sense Rebel terms, a Gear becomes the Rust. Even the best of people can become agents of citizen-on-citizen conflict that aid the extraction system instead of fighting it. Every human being can lose their bearings, and in times of uncertainty it’s more likely.

An ally reacting instead of acting from a core truth risks advancing the enemy’s agenda, and is—in that moment—more dangerous than a witting foe. That concept took me much longer to accept than most other things in the past year. I believe it’s because it is not a warning about bad people to avoid. It is a warning about the people I want to trust or admire most, and a warning about myself.

2. Keep Focused on The Light

I have always loved this quote because of its simplicity yet seeming impossibility. Being able to see the faintest of lights during chaos moves beyond mere skill into discernment. Only difficult experiences and intentionally learning from judgment errors can develop that trait, but it can be developed.

Courage, on the other hand, seems like something you either have or your don’t. But is it really?

I’ve decided it’s something you can augment by preparation. If you see a storm approaching, many decisions can be made in advance. For example, what do you value and how much are you willing to sacrifice for it? If you resolve such questions in your mind and heart in advance, the moment won’t introduce doubt on top of your fears. There is a reason the acronym “F.U.D.” links Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt together. If you resolve the uncertainty and doubt in advance, you only have fear to conquer when the time comes.

3. Determine Your Price in Advance

If you are not willing to forfeit your earthly life in pursuit of the light that leads to the truth, you are at risk of selling your soul for the cheap price of temporary comfort and imaginary safety. However, once you’ve made that decision, future decisions become easy. Especially in this time of rapid change, I’ve settled on the following for myself:

Take the call, attend the one-on-one meeting, be vulnerable, risk your heart, risk your life. Anything less is voluntary slavery.

4. Truth Shall Set You Free

The struggle for humanity’s freedom spans the length of human existence, but our personal freedom is a conscious choice. Follow the path to truth, be free, and love your neighbor as yourself. It’s the best any of us can do.

The past year or so has been incredibly dark for the country, but the personal journey has been liberating.

In the late 1990s, the future of human biology hung on a knife’s edge. A private corporation named Celera Genomics, backed by massive capital and computational supremacy, attempted to sequence the human genome before the publicly funded Human Genome Project could finish.

Celera’s goal was not scientific altruism; it was pure, unadulterated enclosure.

They intended to patent the human genetic code. They wanted to lock the fundamental architecture of human life behind exorbitant subscription fees, proprietary databases, and reach-through royalties. If Celera had succeeded, they would have established a perpetual tax on human biology.
Every medical breakthrough, every genetic therapy, and every cure developed in the 21st century would have required paying a toll to a single corporate monopoly.
They were attempting to privatize the biological commons.

They were defeated not by polite regulation or government intervention, but by a single, brutal tactical doctrine: The Bermuda Principles.

The public consortium realized they could not beat Celera’s raw funding, but they could absolutely destroy their business model. They instituted a scorched-earth open data policy. Every 24 hours, the public consortium dumped all newly sequenced genomic data directly into the public domain on the internet.

By making the data universally and immediately free, they systematically destroyed the “legal novelty” required for Celera to secure patents. You cannot enclose what is already free. The public consortium used open-source data as a kinetic weapon to shatter the monopoly’s moat.

The Modern Bermuda Principle

Today, the Rust is attempting the exact same enclosure, but on an informational scale.

They are not just trying to own the algorithm; they are trying to enclose the data:
the raw mathematical synthesis of all human knowledge, art, reasoning, and philosophy.
Just as Celera tried to patent the DNA of our bodies by claiming ownership of the sequences, the Rust is trying to patent the DNA of our minds by claiming ownership of the global dataset.

When a foundational asset emerges, a monopoly does not seek to innovate; it seeks to enclose. The National Security State requires absolute, panoptic surveillance and behavioral prediction to maintain homeostasis, and they have granted the Tech Monopolies the legislative cover to enclose the cognitive commons in exchange for building that panopticon.

They want to hoard the data.

They treat publicly accessible information as a kind of digital “waste”: a chaotic wilderness of pixels and text with no real economic utility until it is harvested, processed, and enclosed within their trillion-dollar server farms.

This is a meticulously constructed, highly profitable illusion.

We have seen this playbook before. The contemporary extraction of global data by the AI Cartel is not merely an organic technological milestone. It follows the same underlying structural logic as the English Enclosures of the 18th and 19th centuries.

In both cases, an elite takes a resource upon which the producing class depends, uses the law to consolidate control over it, and then forces the dispossessed population to purchase access to something its own labor helped create.

THE FIRST ENCLOSURE: Manufacturing Scarcity

Conservative history often portrays the English Enclosures as a necessary “modernization” that replaced primitive farming with efficient capitalism. This story relies upon the assumption behind the “Tragedy of the Commons”: that shared resources are inevitably destroyed by greedy and irrational individuals.

Elinor Ostrom’s Nobel Prize-winning research demolished the idea that shared resources must inevitably collapse. Commons can be—and historically often were—governed through sophisticated local rules, monitoring, reciprocal obligations, and community enforcement.

The commons were not simply unowned land. They were a social institution.

For the English peasantry, access to shared land provided a crucial economic safety net: the ability to graze a cow, gather firewood, catch fish, and glean grain after the harvest.

These customary rights gave ordinary people limited but meaningful access to the means of subsistence. A commoner who could obtain food and fuel outside the wage system could not be coerced as easily into accepting starvation wages in the brutal new industrial economy.

Their independence was underwritten by the commons.

And that is precisely why the commons stood in the way.

Through Parliamentary Inclosure Acts and related processes of consolidation, landed elites transformed shared fields into exclusive property. Fences created more than physical boundaries. They manufactured scarcity. People who had once possessed customary access to the material basis of survival were transformed into a growing population of landless laborers compelled to sell their labor simply to live.

Karl Marx identified this process as “primitive accumulation”: the violent historical divorce of the producer from the means of production.

Whatever justification appeared on the statute, enclosure produced the labor conditions industrial capital required: a population separated from independent subsistence and increasingly forced into wage work.

It was not merely a change in agricultural technique.

It was a reorganization of human dependency.

THE IDEOLOGICAL SHIELD: “Waste” and “Idleness”

How did the elite justify taking the commons?

They deployed a specific ideological narrative: Improvement.

Agricultural reformers described common lands as “wastes”: resources supposedly left dormant by fragmented rights, local customs, and inefficient collective management. Land, they argued, could only reach its full productive potential when placed under the exclusive control of private owners with sufficient capital.

This economic argument was inseparable from a moral assault on the working class.

The elite systematically associated the commons with “idleness” and “sloth.” A population that was not continuously generating surplus value for a property owner could be portrayed as unproductive, regardless of how hard its members worked to sustain their own families and communities.

Theft was therefore reframed as moral discipline:

We are curing you of your laziness by forcing you into our factories.

The doctrine of Improvement has now returned in computational form.

Human expression is treated as economically dormant until a corporation ingests it, structures it, and places an API in front of it. The public produces the substance. Capital claims ownership of the transformation.

This rhetorical sleight of hand—framing unmonetized public resources as “wasted” potential that only private corporations can optimize—remains one of the primary ideological weapons of the AI monopolies today.

THE SECOND ENCLOSURE: The Cyber-Proletariat

We are living through what legal scholars have called the “Second Enclosure Movement”: the systematic fencing off of the intangible commons of the mind.

Just as agrarian elites consolidated control over physical land, modern mega-corporations use intellectual-property law, Terms of Service agreements, restrictive APIs, compute barriers, and algorithmic moats to consolidate control over cultural, scientific, and informational resources.

Long before the computer, Marx foresaw a stage of capitalism in which production would depend increasingly upon accumulated social knowledge. He called this the General Intellect: the collective scientific knowledge, technical capacity, and social intelligence developed across generations.

Generative AI is the General Intellect absorbed into corporate fixed capital.

An LLM does not generate knowledge out of nothing. It is built by statistically modeling patterns found across an immense body of human expression. The writings, images, arguments, code, discoveries, conversations, and accumulated techniques of millions of people become embodied in computational machinery owned by a small number of corporations.

But the crime is not that machines can learn from humanity.

Human beings have always learned by absorbing, transforming, and extending the work of others. Knowledge grows because it circulates. A society that prohibited every act of intellectual inheritance would not protect culture. It would suffocate it.

The crime is that corporations extracted a collectively produced inheritance, converted it into privately controlled fixed capital, and denied the producing public any reciprocal claim over the intelligence it created.

They did not merely use the commons.

They used the commons to construct a tollbooth around cognition itself.

That distinction matters. A genuine commons allows knowledge to circulate while preserving the community’s power to govern, reproduce, and benefit from it. Enclosure performs the opposite operation: the source is treated as public when capital takes from it, but the resulting intelligence becomes private when the public asks for access.

The input is ours.

The output is theirs.

And access returns to us as a subscription.

The writers, coders, artists, researchers, and analysts who generated the underlying knowledge are now forced to compete against machinery constructed from their own accumulated labor. Their collective intelligence has been alienated from them, embodied in server farms, and deployed as a substitute for the people who created its raw cognitive material.

The machine is built from the stolen souls of the cognitive commons.

Ownership, control, and compounding value flow overwhelmingly upward to the firms that possess the models and infrastructure. The producing class receives no equivalent right to inspect the datasets, govern the systems, reproduce the machinery, or share proportionately in the wealth it generates.

This is the creation of the Cyber-Proletariat: a class dispossessed not only of the tools of production, but of the accumulated intelligence of its own culture.

THE LEGAL WEAPON: Weaponizing “Fair Use”

Just as the aristocracy required Parliamentary authority to formalize enclosure, the AI Cartel needs a legal mechanism capable of legitimizing industrial-scale extraction.

That mechanism is an aggressive expansion of the doctrine of “Fair Use.”

The AI industry argues that scraping copyrighted material to train neural networks is legally protected because the process is “transformative.” The companies claim that they are mapping statistical relationships rather than reproducing protected expression.

But generative AI represents a phase shift.

Unlike a traditional search engine that directs a reader toward an original creator, a generative model can answer the question itself, synthesize a substitute, imitate recognizable features of a creator’s work, or reproduce passages contained in its training material. Litigation such as The New York Times v. OpenAI has placed alleged memorization, near-verbatim reproduction, paywall circumvention, and market substitution directly at the center of the dispute.

The most dangerous principle being constructed is not simply that machines may learn.

It is that public accessibility permits industrial-scale corporate ingestion while the resulting intelligence remains privately owned, commercially protected, and inaccessible to the people whose work made it possible.

The input is treated as common when the Cartel takes it.

The output becomes property when the public asks for it back.

You can be sued into oblivion for pirating a movie. But when a trillion-dollar corporation ingests the human cognitive spectrum, encloses the resulting intelligence, and sells access back to the people who produced it, the extraction is rebranded as innovation.

They are arguing for the legal right to execute the final enclosure of the human mind.

ECOLOGICAL DISASTER: Model Collapse

There is a final, devastating parallel between the agrarian and digital enclosures.

When shared land is consolidated, stripped of local stewardship, and subjected to extractive monoculture, short-term productivity can conceal long-term ecological fragility. A system optimized for immediate yield may slowly destroy the living substrate upon which future production depends.

The digital equivalent is model collapse.

At industrial scale, generative AI remains dependent upon a living substrate of novel human production. Research into model collapse has shown that repeated, indiscriminate training on recursively generated synthetic output can progressively distort the underlying data distribution. Rare and irregular features disappear. Variation contracts. Errors compound. The model gradually forgets the authentic human material upon which its apparent intelligence was built.

Synthetic data is not inherently poisonous. When deliberately generated, filtered, and combined with reliable source material, it can serve legitimate technical purposes.

The danger is recursive contamination: an internet flooded with cheap synthetic output becoming the training ground for the next generation of systems, while the human creators capable of producing genuinely novel work are economically strangled by those same systems.

Generative AI is therefore parasitic in a precise structural sense. It depends upon a continuous influx of cultural variation that it cannot independently originate. It needs living human communities to produce the strange, difficult, local, obsessive, contradictory material from which intelligence emerges.

But the Cartel is simultaneously flooding the commons with synthetic slop and destroying the economic viability of the people who replenish it.

It is poisoning its own well.

If enclosure destroys the human incentive and material capacity to create, the algorithms will eventually starve on their own recycled exhaust.

The depleted soil becomes the depleted culture.

REFUSING THE LEARNED HELPLESSNESS

The English Enclosures were not an inevitable law of nature. They were political and legal choices that redistributed power upward.

The modern enclosure of the cognitive commons follows the same structural vector.

We cannot defeat it by politely requesting oversight from the same bureaucratic and corporate systems that enable the extraction. Nor can we defend the commons by locking knowledge away and pretending that circulation itself is the enemy.

The response is not to abolish collective intelligence.

It is to prevent collective intelligence from becoming privately owned command infrastructure.

You cannot win a capital war by telling the working class to just “run open-source models on their local hardware” when the Cartel is building hundred-billion-dollar compute clusters.

The response requires a brutal structural reclassification. If the Cartel’s models are built on the entirety of human history, they are no longer proprietary products; they are critical public infrastructure. The cognitive commons must be defended by forcing the AI monopolies into Title II Common Carrier classification, stripping them of their ability to censor, toll, or enclose the intelligence we built, and treating their compute as a public utility.

The cognitive commons must be defended not as an ownerless wasteland waiting to be optimized by the Cartel, but as a governed inheritance. The legal frameworks to do this already exist—from Data Trusts to Sovereign Data Unions—architectures designed to ensure contributors retain the legal and structural right to access, reproduce, and benefit from the intelligence built upon their labor without paying a rentier's toll.

But is this possible?

Can a decentralized network actually defeat a massive, heavily capitalized corporate enclosure?

Yes.

Because it has happened before.

I had to invest all my energy and attention, on my “day off,” in regulating, holding boundaries, and listening to the incessant noise of a dysregulated five-year-old.

That takes more than I have left. I’m paying for it. I’ve been paying for it. For years. In headaches, in physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion. In a nonexistent social life. In chronic stress, in anxiety, in pounds gained over the last five years.

In bills that outrun any amount of hours I work or side hustles I stack.

I’ll spend my other day off doing it all again (I did.)

Then back to work, sales, where performance and appearance, attention and care, are required. Again. On demand. For full-grown adults. Adults also looking for attention, for care.

So distress.

Relief is needed, desperately.

Time. Care. To have the bandwidth to be the parent my children deserve, to have the dignity of me counting.

Not money. Living. Relating. Being.

Why is this the thing we’ve made unaffordable while claiming it as a zero on the books?

In Greek mythology, Cassandra was cursed with absolute foresight—she knew exactly how Troy would fall—but the gods ensured no one would believe her. She spent her life screaming warnings from the walls, draining her sanity while the city burned anyway.

Right now, if you are paying attention to the digital enclosure, you are trapped in the Cassandra Loop.

You look at the trillion-dollar AI Cartels, the algorithmic media, and the rapid criminalization of open-source tech, and you see the extraction machine for what it is. You see “The Rust” building a Panopticon and calling it “AI Safety.” You see them declaring that The Truth is Now a National Security Threat.

This is a catastrophic waste of your thermodynamic energy.

The system is not broken. It is functioning exactly as designed. The managerial elite cannot be debated, persuaded, or petitioned because their economic survival mathematically requires your dispossession.

The Cassandra Algorithm is the absolute refusal to waste another drop of your "density of intent" begging a captured system to reform itself. Stop screaming into the void. THE CARTEL PLAYBOOK:

The Arrow Replacement Effect

There is a foundational lie at the center of the Artificial Intelligence industry: The Cartel claims they need absolute regulatory control over AGI to “protect humanity.”

This is not an ethical stance. It is an economic requirement.

To understand why, we have to look at the Arrow Replacement Effect (Arrow, 1962). In economic theory, a monopolist has significantly less incentive to innovate than a new entrant. If a monopolist invents a radical new technology, it largely replaces their existing highly profitable product line. A new entrant, however, has nothing to lose and everything to gain.

The tech monopolies (Google, Microsoft, Meta) are terrified of open-source, decentralized AI because it is the ultimate “new entrant” technology. It threatens to destroy their massively profitable Web 2.0 moats—search engines, closed social networks, and proprietary advertising algorithms.

They aren’t building “Safety Protocols” to protect you from AGI. They are building a regulatory moat to protect their legacy profit margins from you.

THE MASTER SWITCH:

The AT&T Precedent

We have seen this exact playbook before.

In the mid-20th century, the Bell System (AT&T) held an absolute monopoly over American telecommunications. Inside their legendary R&D wing, Bell Labs, they invented some of the most critical technologies in human history: the transistor, magnetic recording tape, and the foundations of fiber optics.

But AT&T executives systematically suppressed, delayed, or hid these technologies for decades. Why?

Because of the magnetic answering machine. In 1934, Bell Labs invented a device that could record phone calls. AT&T executives panicked and buried it. They argued that if people could record calls, they would use the phone less, threatening AT&T’s primary revenue stream: the billing of live minutes over copper wire.

When a monopoly controls a foundational technology, their primary objective ceases to be innovation. Their primary objective becomes the suppression of any evolution that threatens their legacy infrastructure.

The AI Cartel is the modern Bell System. They are demanding that the government grant them an exclusive monopoly over AGI through strict licensing laws and compute thresholds. If they succeed, they will act exactly like AT&T: suppressing any open-source evolution that threatens their closed ecosystems.

THE AVERCH-JOHNSON EFFECT:

Gold-Plating the Prison

The Cartel currently justifies their monopoly by pointing to the sheer cost of AGI. They are building $100 billion, 1.3-Gigawatt data centers, arguing that only massive, centralized corporations have the capital required to build safe AGI.

This is a classic manifestation of the Averch-Johnson Effect.

When a monopoly is regulated (or anticipates regulation), they have an incentive to over-invest in massive, unnecessary capital infrastructure—a practice known as “gold-plating.” Because regulators typically allow monopolies to earn a guaranteed rate of return based on their total capital investment, building a needlessly expensive $100 billion data center ensures massive guaranteed profits and creates an insurmountable barrier to entry for decentralized competition.

They are gold-plating the prison. They are intentionally building AI infrastructure to be as massive, centralized, and capital-intensive as possible, specifically so they can argue that you, the citizen, cannot be trusted to run it locally.

RECLAIMING THE COMMONS

The Cartel wants you to believe that Artificial Intelligence is their private invention. It is not.

The data powering these massive neural networks is the cognitive and behavioral exhaust of the human species. They scraped the internet. They scraped how we argue, how we code, how we solve problems, and how we adapt. They took the intellectual property of the public domain and synthesized it.

They built the plow, but they used our dirt. And they do not own the harvest.

She agreed with most of it. She said it seemed like everyone in my generation was either scraping by or posting from somewhere expensive about the millions they were making. I said that gap was the thing I keep writing about, and I walked her through some of the machinery underneath it; who books what, and where the cost lands.

I named the problem. I had not named a cure.

She said: “Socialism is not the answer though.”

I did not say socialism. I did not describe socialism. I could not define it for you now if you put a gun on the table and demanded it, and I have stopped treating that as my failing. It sits with fascism, capitalism, and communism as sounds my ears hear as static, theories I have never seen instantiated, each one carrying a verdict welded on before it arrives, the verdict flipping depending on who is holding it. I had said I cannot afford a mortgage or rent. She answered a question I hadn’t asked.

That was the morning. The article came in the afternoon.

Hours later a headline caught me:

Robert Reich, Corporate America EXPOSED! A title to tempting to believe, and I knew it, and I clicked it anyway.

I did not buy his frame. I want to be plain about that, because his frame largely agrees with me: corporations captured the government, the returns run up and the wages run flat, the people who set the terms do not live under them. Agreement is the cheapest thing I can be sold. When a piece slides in that easily, that is my signal to slow down and go find what it stood on.

I traced the sources cited, starting with the Wall Street Journal, articles by Gerard Baker. Two names now between me and the sources they build on before I had read a sentence of the foundation. When I pulled up the Journal’s follow-up column, the subtitle read:

So I went and got the receipts.

The original column is Gerard Baker’s, titled “Socialism Is the Wrong Answer, but the Questions Are Real.” It opens by conceding everything I have been saying at kitchen tables for years. Inequality on a scale not seen in a century. Mobility falling. Oligopoly-level concentration in almost every sector. Endemic cronyism. A healthcare system run principally for the benefit of insurers and pharmaceutical companies. Regulation and legislation applied for the benefit of big companies. A business-political class promoting its own well-being at the expense of competition, the market, and ultimately the people.

That list, a man at the Wall Street Journal wrote it.

I traced what he had built on.

Baker’s first citation is Gallup. “Four in ten Americans say they have a favorable view of socialism”, he writes, and sets that beside what he calls widespread popular dissatisfaction with the working of modern American capitalism. I opened the Gallup page he is pointing at. It is titled Image of Capitalism Slips to 54% in U.S. Here is the whole trend, published on the same page:

Socialism: 36% in 2010, 39% in 2012, 35% in 2016, 37% in 2018, 39% in 2019, 38% in 2021, 39% in 2025.

Capitalism: 61% in 2010, 61% in 2012, 60% in 2016, 56% in 2018, 60% in 2019, 60% in 2021, 54% in 2025.

Fifteen years. Every reading on socialism sits inside the margin of every other, which Gallup puts at 4 points on a sample of 1,094 people reached by telephone. Capitalism dropped 7. Baker cited the flat line. Gallup put the moving line in the headline.

Those calls were placed between the 1st and 20th of August, 2025. The column ran a year later, and the number arrives as the current temperature.

He also walked past the rest of the survey, which asked the same people about three things that have edges.

Small business: 95% positive. Free enterprise: 81% positive. Big business: 37% positive, 62% negative, down from 58% positive in 2012.

44 points of daylight between free enterprise and big business, from the same mouths on the same call. That is Baker’s own thesis — capitalism eaten by corporate power — sitting in the file he opened, measured, dated, left out of his article.

Second citation.

Baker writes that the New York Fed reported “the labor share of income—wages and salaries—fell to its lowest level in 80 years as returns to capital continue to soar.”

The post is by Richard Audoly, Miles Guerin, Srinidhi Narayanan, and Rachel Schuh, dated June 24, 2026. The number is real. The labor share sits at a post-war low — the post-war period runs eighty-one years, so his arithmetic holds — 1.6 points under where it sat before the pandemic. The authors then ask whether this decline is a new and distinct phenomenon.

They answer no. Twice. The trajectory tracks earlier recession cycles. The fall came from within industries rather than from output shifting between them. Their last sentence: the results suggest the decline follows the same cyclical patterns as earlier recessions, and they find

“little evidence that it will evolve differently from past episodes.”

Baker kept the alarming number and dropped what the authors concluded about it — that the drop follows the same cycle as the recessions before it. The clause about returns to capital soaring appears nowhere in the post; that one is his. And the literature the post cites for the long-run slide names technological change, superstar firms, and rising markups — market power, concentration, the exact disease Baker had already named in his own second paragraph. He had the mechanism handed to him by his own footnote and he left it there.

Twice now — Gallup, then the Fed. Same move. The number is the one the source claimed; however, the actual finding attached to it did not make the transfer.

Third Citation.

Baker’s remedy list includes eliminating corporate welfare, and that plank traces back through a Cato Institute event to Chris Edwards, Corporate Welfare in the Federal Budget, Cato Institute, 2025.

Cato’s articles of incorporation were filed on the nineteenth of December, 1974, under the name Charles Koch Foundation, listing Charles Koch, George Pearson, and Roger MacBride as directors at the Koch Industries address in Wichita. Accumulated Koch giving runs near thirty million dollars against roughly four hundred million raised since then.

Swing at the funding and you miss. Cato and the Kochs went to court over control in 2012, and Cato came out with a board that appoints itself. Nobody is holding the pen..

Look at the definition instead.

Corporate welfare, as Cato scopes it, means federal budget outlays to business. Accept that and the fix has to land in the spending column, which is why “eliminate corporate welfare” sits down comfortably beside a line saying entitlements and welfare spending must be scaled back to a sustainable level. Regulatory capture, tax expenditures, market concentration — the things Baker named as the disease — sit outside the definition, and so they sit outside the cure.

A reader arrives angry at corporations. The anger is real, the diagnosis was handed to you freely, and the remedy routes you to cutting the floor under your own feet. Nobody had to lie. The redirect happened inside a word.

Fourth citation

Baker’s mobility claim points at a Visual Capitalist infographic — a design product, built by Marcus Lu in 2020, from Opportunity Insights data, with its wage comparisons running to 2018. The research underneath it is real, and the finding holds.

He cited the picture rather than the study, and the picture was six years old when he used it to describe where the country is now.

Baker concedes the diagnosis at full strength, then assigns the cause to government and prescribes less of it.

The diagnosis says corporations captured the state. The cure says shrink the state. That is the reversal, and the concession is what buys it. A reader who has spent ten years being told their pain is a budgeting failure finally hears it named, and the naming arrives with a bill attached.

Two sentences of Baker’s hold the reversal up.

The first: “under Citizens United, corporations have a First Amendment right to seek to influence politics, and there isn’t much that can be done about the need for money to win elections.” One sentence after he names campaign money as the engine of capture, it becomes something we can’t do much about—weather.

The second: “lest all this sound like a recipe for dirigisme of the sort historically proven to suppress enterprise and innovation.”Dirigisme means the state steering the economy. Two words carry the sentence — historically proven — with no citation under them, standing in for a literature that argues both ways. And the clause names the reader’s alternative before he can reach for it, in a French word with the verdict already welded on. That is the move from the kitchen table. My mother arrived at that conclusion in a few minutes because that is the box left for anyone who’d argue the opposite.

Then the remedies, in the order Baker gives them:

more transparency about campaign money, reform of the party primaries, shrink government, scale back entitlements and welfare, cut the debt, stop the central bank backstopping excess.

Count where they point. Four at government — its size, its spending, its debt, its central bank. Two at elections, and he has already told us the first of those cannot be fixed. None at a company.

Break up monopolies appears once. No enforcement standard, no merger test, no budget, no agency. The fiscal remedies name what to cut — entitlements, welfare, the debt. The one remedy aimed at the disease he diagnosed names nothing at all.

That last plank on the list, the central bank one, traces to a TD Economics report, A History of Fed ‘Puts’, by James Orlando and Brett Saldarelli, dated March 21, 2023 — written in the two weeks after Silicon Valley Bank failed. A Fed put is the market’s expectation that the central bank will step in when prices fall far enough. The report confirms the hazard Baker points at: a standing rescue invites the risk it insures, because investors who expect a catch take bets they would otherwise refuse.

Then it prescribes, and the prescription runs the other way. Its cure is stronger rules on the banking system — more capital held against losses, tighter supervision — so that fewer rescues are needed. The one time the backstop was withheld was Lehman Brothers in 2008, and the report names that as the trigger for the worst downturn since the Depression. Baker’s plank says stop the backstopping. His source says keep it and regulate harder around it.

The hazard survives the hop. The cure stays behind.

The diagnosis is about power: who owns whom, who sets the terms. The prescription is about budget lines: what the government spends, what it owes. You do not need to claim anyone coordinated this, and I am not claiming it. Set the disease beside the cure and read them together. He names the sickness in one organ and writes the prescription for another..

On the Tuesday of the week ending August 16, 2026, Ainsley Earhardt read Baker’s column aloud on Fox & Friends.

The inequality line, the line that capitalism needs reaffirming rather than replacing, and the remedy list — break up monopolies, eliminate corporate welfare, acknowledge the public’s economic pain. The Wall Street Journal and Fox News sit under the same controlling shareholder, the Murdoch family trust.

One column. One owner. Two properties. Inside a week.

I cannot tell you which pipe carried it to my mother, and I am not going to pretend I can. Fox on a Tuesday, a forwarded link, a friend at church, the ambient air. What I can tell you is that it got there before it got to me, arrived without a citation, and arrived with the verdict already attached.

I did not go looking for Baker to refute him. I went looking for a witness whose authority I could borrow.

My father does not believe my reports. He has heard them, in detail, more than once, with numbers — the firsthand accounting and the peer-reviewed studies both. The reports come from a son who would benefit from being believed, and that makes them easy to set aside as biased when the conclusion is uncomfortable. The studies have no such interest, and they get set aside anyway. So when I saw a Wall Street Journal editor at large writing inequality on a scale not seen in a century, my first reaction was not analysis. It was: if this guy says it, maybe my dad will finally hear me.

If I’d acted immediately, I would have taken a person with a position, writing for an audience with a position, and handed it to my father as testimony, because the authority borrowed would be useful at that table. Wanting it first and checking it after is the order that gets people. My rule is that the standard has to cut its holder first, and it cut me on the sequence — only on the sequence, because I did check.

What checking found is that the witness comes with a rider. To hand my father Baker as proof of the diagnosis, I also hand him a document arguing that entitlements and welfare must be scaled back. The credibility and the remedy ship in one envelope, and I cannot open it halfway.

The price of being believed is arriving in support of the policy that takes the floor out from under the exact condition I was describing.

My mother is the proof the trade has already cleared once in this family. She took delivery of the diagnosis and the refusal together, and the refusal was seated before I opened my mouth at the kitchen table.

Gallup asked 1,094 people about two words with no edges and got one line flat for fifteen years and one drifting seven points.

Gallup asked the same people about three things with edges — small business, free enterprise, big business — and got 95, 81, and 37, moving hard, moving coherently, telling you exactly where the country stands. The terms that carry information are the ones nobody fights about. The national argument is conducted in the two words that measure nothing.

That is why the sentence worked on me at drop off and why I had no answer for it. Refusing a word with no edges costs nothing and obligates nothing. You cannot be wrong about it, because you never made a checkable claim. My sentence had edges. Rent against wage, hours against a month, a number of dollars against a bill. Checkable, therefore expensive to say, therefore easy to mark down as a failure of budgeting or grit.

Both were spoken in the same two minutes by two people who love each other.

I can hand you the finding: the Fed post concludes the opposite of what the column used it to say.

Go read it, it takes four minutes. But you are taking my word that it is worth four minutes, and my word is the thing in question. The audit does not travel. The work stays with whoever did it. What travels is the result, and the result arrives as an assertion from an interested party, which drops you back into the room I started in.

Socialism is not the answer though regenerates on contact, costs nothing, obligates nothing, survives being wrong forever because it never risked being right. My sentence in the kitchen was and is checkable. That is why it was expensive. That is why it lost.

I am not sure the arithmetic clears. I am sure the ledger is worth keeping.

Go find one claim you accepted this month because a source you trust said it. One. Follow it back to the primary document — the actual poll page, the actual paper, the actual filing — and read the conclusion the authors wrote in their own hand. Then come back and tell me in the comments what survived the trip and what did not. Cite the link. Name the gap if there is one, and say so plainly if there is none, because a clean chain is a finding too.
