I am grateful to those who defend this country. The wars have been something else. And I hate that I am called ungrateful for saying this out loud. I hate that I am told the story instead: exceptionalism, hard-won freedom, safety for my family and I, where anyone can become successful with enough hard work. I hate that I am ordered to be grateful to the dead, I am told, for my freedom, while the veterans who served beside them and lived say, by majorities, that those wars weren’t worth fighting. The survivors won’t sign the story of what their friends’ lives bought. It wasn’t freedom, and it wasn’t security at home. It was enrichment, of the financial institutions and their blood-hungry behemoth, the military-industrial (and now tech) complex, which drinks blood and books it as revenue. I hate that the truth is so painful, so morally repulsive, so unAmerican, that the reflex is a story where an audit should be: mental illness presumed in me alone, good intentions and fair conduct presumed in everyone above me; neither presumption ever checked.

And I hate that this hate, this massive, fiery, ticking time bomb, has nowhere to go immediately. I hate that the path of least resistance runs through whatever won’t or can’t fight back. This makes the cost of release the destruction of what and whom I love — the very ones who most deserve protecting.

I hate what they did to us. Mutilated. Brainwashed. Poisoned. Abused. Whole generations fed through the machine for whoever was shameless and heartless enough to run it without flinching.

They put lead in the gasoline and fought the evidence for fifty years while it shaved points off children’s minds. And when those children came of age, the crime wave came with them; a research literature ties a real share of it to lead’s impairment of executive capacity, empathy, and impulse control. The generation with the most wealth and power in the country now? Childhoods spent inside the hardest-hit, lead exposure window on record.

They laced tobacco with additives that increase the addictiveness of the plant, funded disinformation campaigns, and lied under oath while continuing to put tar in the lungs of their countrymen and women.

They poured billions of opioid pills into the small towns, lied about the addictive potential and safety of the drugs, mapped the sales by zip code, even drafting a price for overdoses to incentivize the continued selling of a product that was killing hundreds of thousands of Americans.

They wrote the loans, stamped them gold, sold them to the pension funds, and banked the bonus before the fire reached the ground floor, all while claiming to be providing a crucial service to markets and capital.

They lied repeatedly to us, the people they claim to serve, deployed what would be considered terrorist tactics by any foreign actor, domestically to achieve their interests. They invaded privacy at scale and lied under oath about it. They experimented on unwilling citizens — patients, prisoners, children — causing lifelong damage, many of the harmed never accounted for because the evidence was destroyed. They call themselves intelligence. They call it serving “national defense”.

They froze their own taxes, walled their own neighborhoods, cut the school funding, repriced the whole ladder, then called my generation, and those that followed, soft for noticing the rungs were gone.

I could go on, I have, this publication has written extensive receipts. You don’t need to know everything they’ve confessed to feel the impact, you live in it daily. None of these criminals served time. None were barred from their trades. None were stripped of the powers they abused. And many are now in control of essential infrastructure, with even greater power and influence than before. So of course the game hasn’t changed. They made the rules of it and make sure they never play it.

I hate the world that let it happen. I hate the country that built it.

Who the fuck am I talking about?

Go through the nouns. Country. Government. News stations. Corporations. Wall Street. World. They. Them. It.

Count the addresses. Zero. The deeds are in there now: the surgeries, the gasoline, the additives, the pills, the burned files, and still there is no person in that rant. Every verb hangs on a they. I named the crimes and never once named a criminal. Nothing in it can be arrested, subpoenaed, fired, sued, voted out, defunded, or repealed — you cannot arrest a they. Every sentence is true and every sentence is useless. 675 words of hate, and never one name. Where do I send that?

Spewing hot steam, settling to fog and responsibility is easy to disown. “The corporations” is a place a specific desk hides. “The government” is a place a specific signature hides. A man who took a fee to unsee something has one deep wish for his accusers; that they stay general. Vague hate is the machine’s favorite weather in its enemies. It burns its bearer to ashes, it spreads the fire, and lands on nothing it aims at, any truth behind the blaze made unrecognizable. It leaves the guilty exactly where they were, minus their names, but those can be bought back too. And by the machine I mean, here and every time below, one specifiable arrangement: a fee paid to a person with a name to unsee a harm with a date, inside a structure that outlives him and hires his replacement — parts you can list, which makes it an address, and a definition you can hold me to.

They tell people being gaslit — psychologically abused, emotionally abused — to keep detailed records. Notes. Dates. What was said, what was done. For their own sanity. The advice scales. A person can be gaslit. A country can. I can’t claim the full story, and where the impact is upstream, out of my direct reach, I seek sourcing relentlessly, painstakingly, thoroughly. So here is the record, and its items are not up for debate, because it is a record, not an opinion or a story. Here is the inventory — direct, documented, sourced, prepared for your witnessing, and perhaps, your sanity.

Here is what an address looks like.

Between early 2006 and mid-2007, a firm called Clayton Holdings sampled 911,000 mortgages for the banks bundling them into securities. 28% percent failed the banks’ own stated standards. The banks waived roughly two of every 5 failures into the pools anyway and told the buyers nothing. The waiver rates sit in the public record, bank by bank.

In November 2007, Richard Bowen, chief underwriter in Citigroup’s consumer lending group, wrote to Robert Rubin and three other executives that 60% of the mortgages Citi was buying were defective. Citi stripped his duties. Both men have names. The email has a date. The retaliation has a paper trail.

In 2007, one Standard & Poor’s analyst messaged another that a deal could be structured by cows and they would still rate it. The exchange sits in the congressional record with the names attached.

For all of it, one Wall Street executive went to prison. His name is Kareem Serageldin. One.

And that number convicts my rant twice over. I wrote: none of these criminals served time. Then at the turn I certified every sentence of the rant as true. The record revokes both. One man served time here, and one more elsewhere in the catalogue: John Kapoor, who founded Insys and drew 66 months for bribing doctors to push a fentanyl spray. I wrote none. I certified the none. The record says two. The record wins; that is what a record is for, it outranks the rant, and it outranks my defense of the rant. Rage rounds down to never, because never feels like the truth. The ledger keeps the remainder, and the remainder cuts deeper than the rounding: two convictions, against the whole catalogue above, is a number you can hate with precision.

This might surprise you, it shocked me: most of it is admitted. Declassified by the agencies that did it. Conceded in settlements without admission of wrongdoing. Entered as exhibits in court. The machine learned that a confession without a consequence works like absolution — cheaper than a secret, and it ages into trivia. The files are open, and the agencies that filled them still operate.

The ledger of the last con is the floor plan of the next one.

The newest cons are built addressless — wallets without desks, issuers without bodies, and the answer holds anyway: when the desk is gone, the mechanism is the address.

The test runs on live systems, present tense. The warrantless-collection authority behind the privacy invasions in my rant — Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act — is not a fog. It is a statute with a sunset clause and a docket. The surveillance court’s own released opinions counted the FBI’s improper searches of Americans in the hundreds of thousands. This June, Congress let the statute lapse rather than agree on terms — and as I write, the collection runs on anyway, grandfathered under court certifications approved in March and valid into next year: the machinery outliving its own permission slip. The one extension that passed this spring cleared the House on a recorded roll call, 261 to 111; the Senate waved it through by unanimous consent — renewal with the names withheld, fog run as procedure, and that choice sits in the record too. The last attempt died on the House floor, 198 to 218, names recorded. Every renewal is a list of names, or a decision to keep the list blank.

Feel the difference in your hands. “I hate the banks” moves nothing. “Citigroup waived defective loans into securities and silenced the underwriter who flagged it” — that sentence has an address. You can subpoena an address. You can legislate against it, claw it back, print it beside a name and make a specific person answer a specific question in public, under oath, on the record. Every “them” in my rant was a handhold I gave away.

So the title of this piece is a confession. Look at it. The United State of America — one state, one machine, the typo stays because the thing it names has no address either. You cannot depose a fog. The title is my failure mode: the rant that feels like resistance and works like coals in their steam engine.

Changing this costs discipline, it would be easier to leave this at the rant. I’m not here for easy unless easy works. So, take your own rant — the one you carry, the one you say in the car. Strike every noun that has no address: no person, no statute, no date, no desk. Read what survives. If the page is empty, what you have is weather. The record is public. The names are in it. Go get them.

So there it is. The receipts.

Ample reason for justified anger. The kind that comes only after your own thorough self-examination: the one that makes you see and know your own evil, and how any of us might slide into it. Justified anger passed the weapon test by cutting its wielder first. And even then it leaves you baffled, unable to untangle the kind of mind, the absence of feeling, the void that would make these decisions and then keep lying, keep denying, keep refusing the bill.

I can’t audit that interior. Nobody can. The record is all impact, and the impact is enough.

We see the other kind everywhere: the rage I opened this piece with. It’s a real feeling with real receipts, sometimes too many to say: the Church committee that counted the crimes couldn’t publish its whole inventory, and part of it burned before anyone could count it. So a lifetime of violation gets crushed into a phrase — a rant, a they, said in the car.

And the entities are still here. Subsidiaries, successors, the same actors under new letterhead — operating today. Try to make them pay, where paying means repairing the harm. They haven’t. They can’t. Some of what was taken never had a resale price — my childhood, yours, the pre-poisoning potential of a brain that got the lead anyway. Zero-booked going in, unpayable coming out. Ask for it back and watch what happens. Where do you ask? Whom? What happens when you do?

Look: there are names. There are procedures. The easy game is the other one — hate, widespread, nearest target. Aim, release, relief; nothing changes. Undirected anger obeys a gradient: it flows downhill, toward whoever is closest and least defended, and it lands there. On the already wounded. On the people with the least leverage. On people like me. I’m living inside this with my parents and my aunt — the news has made them unrecognizable, lit whenever the topic comes up, certain, enforcing, convinced they are right and owed. That last word is the disease. Nobody here holds the debt being collected. I don’t owe you anything, nor you I. So stop taking it just because you can.

The anger is yours, and it is justified. The landing is a choice.

My shoulders sit level with my ears.

They rise on their own. I ask a language model why my body does this and learn what I already feel: threat. I learn its first purpose: guard the neck, leave less of it bared to whatever comes. The body kept this knowledge. The mind never held it.

Release takes ritual. I have to catch it happening, lift my shoulders, let them fall. A ritual repeated through the day, because the flinch was built for a danger with edges, meaning it comes, it strikes or misses, it passes, and the body stands down. This one is built to stay: prices that climb while I sleep; decisions that land on my life, made without me in the room; the camera over the floor at work, always on, sharp enough to read my phone screen. Nothing lunges. Nothing leaves. The tension settles in my neck, the part where half the world comes into me. The strain makes headaches. I feel a dull weight at the top of everything, heavy enough that having a thought at all is work.

A captured body is only the first layer. Wage labor holds mine inside four walls, and the menu of motion goes stand, sit, pace. My own guard is the next layer in, the part that has my shoulders pinching my neck, jaw clamped, a wall I carry. Then the face: the store allows a short list of expressions, and I am expected to wear one for the length of the shift, a smile. Body and mind, rented as vessels to serve the manufacturer and close the sale. The only loop that closes on this floor is the sale.

A caged body still craves motion. The craving has nowhere to land. The innermost layer: knowing it. Sitting in the cage aware of the cage, where even a daydream is stolen time.

I’m bored. Bored as hell.

Hell is boring. It has been since before Dante— he just wrote it down, in a book I was required to read in high school English. The title lies. The descent tells the truth: the lowest circle is ice. Every level a loop, the same turn over and over until it stops. Not death. Death ends, and an ending starts something new. This ends nothing and starts nothing. This is the loop that won’t close— frozen, going nowhere, at absolute zero, where even the motion stops. They called it “The Inferno” and left you to cold to shiver.

A frozen vessel is a closed vessel.

Nothing enters. Nothing leaves. It has only what was in it the moment it froze. A living thing is in motion. Its membrane is porous and selective — it takes the world in, it gives itself back out, exchange across a gradient, and the exchange holds a charge. The form is a channel for the life, both at once. A frozen vessel can copy the shape. It can nest smaller vessels inside it, tip and spill, pass for alive. It makes nothing. It has no life, no charge of its own. So it keeps the one thing a dead vessel can keep. Words. And the word it keeps is the lie— all that’s left when the life is gone and even death won’t take you.

Words weave a world, and the world eats you from the inside. A rounding error, compounding, until it costs less to keep the lie than to tell the truth. So the lie is what gets kept.

I went looking for the system that works.

The economy that isn’t eating its own future. I looked in words, because my body can’t leave the store without consequences I can’t afford. Regardless, the hunt must go on, and the hunt runs the shelves now— the encyclopedia and the grocery aisle, both standardized, both sorted. The world arrives mapped. Your words arrive before you can speak them. The relationship arrives optimized. The name arrives known. The forest arrives plastic-wrapped— whole plains portioned out, single-serve to family-size, stacked on a shelf. The origin is hidden on every one of them. You hunt down the row and the predator hunts you back, wearing clean color, smiling, making a claim that sounds like your grandmother’s kitchen. It eats you from the inside.

I couldn’t find the system. There isn’t one anywhere with money to spare, because the spare money is what eating yourself makes. The search has no end. That’s why it bores. A loop that can’t close feels exactly like this.

Satisfaction has a location.

It happens where we are— in the room, on the tongue, in the hand. Everywhere else you get the picture of it: the copy flattened and the reality deferred. The idea of an iced latte can’t deliver the cold in the hand, the cup sweating, the chill reaching your lip before the taste does. The future can’t be tasted. The past can’t be lived twice; every remembering is built new in the present. So language runs the future and plots the past, and it arrives wearing the certainty of truth and the feeling of almost. The frozen world is built entirely of about.

My body knew before my awareness did. Both are mine. I set a stone in metal, my hands worked the prongs, and it closed the way I meant it to. I intended, I acted, the world answered, and the answer matched. A loop that shuts. The store doesn’t give me that, and the search doesn’t, and the lie can never close because it never opened. Only the thing itself, arriving, with language given no vote.

So the same instrument cuts both ways. Words weave the world that eats me. Words also hold the space for a thing until it comes to be. One points at the deferred and freezes. One points at the referent and lands. The spell that builds the cage and the spell that builds the arch are the same spell — the only difference is where it’s aimed.

It’s the most precious warmth in a world frozen over. And it reads as nothing, because fire can’t be hoarded — it gives off its heat and light in the moment or not at all, and you can’t freeze it, can’t stock it, can’t liquidate it on command. Only feel it. Only know it.

Give AI its due: it has produced the most honest ledger our economy has ever kept on what intelligence costs to build. The four largest American technology companies have guided $725 billion in capital spending for 2026 — up 77% in one year [hyperscaler Q4 2025 guidance]. Labeling wages that climb with the labeler’s credentials: $12 an hour for basic tagging, $75 to $200 for a licensed doctor, lawyer, or PhD [Mercor published rates, 2026]. Red-team hours. Curation. Licensing deals for archives the models haven’t eaten yet — News Corp at $250 million over five years, Reddit at $130 million a year [WSJ; company reports] — and a court that priced a pirated book at three thousand dollars, once [Bartz v. Anthropic settlement, 2025]. Continuous refreshment, because a mind trained once and left alone goes stale.

I reread the list . Each one names a kind of care. Attention from someone who knows more than you. Correction that costs the corrector something. Good material, chosen on purpose. Time.

Every item on that list has a going rate. When the student is a child, the rate is zero.

Zero has a history. The mother’s hours: $0 — the unpaid care and domestic work of American women alone prices out near one and a half trillion dollars a year, that’s with stale statistics and the counters used minimum wage [Oxfam 2020]. The childcare worker: $15.41 an hour, a median in the bottom 5% of all American occupations [BLS May 2024; Chicago Fed 2024]. The teacher: paid 26.9% less than other college graduates — a record gap, quadrupled since 1996 [EPI/CEPR 2024]. The newsroom: 3,500 papers gone since 2005 and three of every four newspaper jobs with them — 365,000 people down to 92,000 [Medill 2025]. The federal endowment for new humanistic work: $78 million in competitive grants, proposed for elimination twice in two budgets — less than two AI labs pay Reddit each year for its old posts [CRS; NEH appropriations; company reports]. Each zero was booked as savings. The books balanced. The books lied.

The objection is already loading: the schools. America does spend there — about $18,600 a pupil, near a trillion a year, roughly $9,900 of it reaching instruction [NCES 2020–21]. So convert the spend into the machine’s unit: attention per mind. In the infant room the law itself fixes the ration, one adult for every three or four [state licensing minimums]. In the classroom it is one for twenty to thirty [NCES NTPS], and they are the professional paid a quarter less than their degree commands. The machine’s package inverts every term: one-on-one attention, thousands of credentialed experts in parallel, around the clock, undivided [industry reporting] — and no expert arrives depleted, because the expert clocks out. The parent never does. What the child’s trillion buys, per mind per hour, is a sliver of a tired adult.

Prices are sentences. Read the two columns together and they say one thing: a built mind is worth more than a born one. Our budgets have been saying it for decades. So have the youth mental-illness curves [CDC YRBS 2023]. So has the parental burnout the Surgeon General took the rare step of flagging [advisory, Aug 2024]. So have the reading scores, the worst in over thirty years for the children already behind [NAEP 2024–25]; the forty-seven seconds a screen now holds an adult’s attention [Mark, UC Irvine]; and the loneliness the same office titled an epidemic [SG advisory 2023]. The budgets speak in dollars. The bodies answer in symptoms. The machine ledger just made the sentence legible.

Here is the mechanism, under magnification. The zero is a subsidy. Formation kept happening because mothers, fathers, care takers, mentors, teachers, and the writers now dead in the training data did the work without sending an invoice. Love doesn’t bill. The market booked love’s labor at nothing, called the difference profit, and the trick held for as long as every student had a mother.

The machine has no mother.

Every hour of its raising arrives with an invoice attached. And the same economy that swore for a century that formation was free now wires billions, monthly, to pay for formation — line by line, at market rate, without complaint.

That wire transfer is a confession.

Here is mine. I have made the human case in human terms: the child, the hour, the true weight of what a person is built on. And watched it get filed under sentiment. Say machine and the room leans in. So this essay runs on the machine’s ledger. I hate that. Even the case for the child had to be priced in silicon to get a hearing.

So run the cost of keeping the zero. Call it what the record shows: a choice. The lapsed credit was a vote. The flat wage is a vote renewed every budget season. We are choosing to starve and abandon feeling, thinking, living beings, and to enrich their silicon simulations — then rent the simulations back by the month. The choice is recorded. Its cost compounds in two directions.

Downstream, in the children. Formation continues when funding stops; a child forms every waking hour regardless. The only open question is what forms them. Remove the attentive adult and whatever is available stands in to fill the vacancy: a screen, a room of thirty-four, an eight-minute visit, a closed library. Heckman priced the upside: the studied programs returned 7-10% a year for preschool, 13% for birth-to-five [Heckman et al. 2010; García, Heckman, Leaf & Prados, ABC/CARE]. The same arithmetic runs downhill—skills compound, and so does their absence [T2: author extension of dynamic complementarity; Cunha & Heckman 2007]. We ran the experiment in the open. One expanded child credit cut child poverty nearly in half in a single year, 9.7% down to 5.2%; Congress let it lapse; the rate snapped back to 12.4% the next year — the largest one-year rise for children on record — and kept climbing, 13.7 %by 2023 [Census SPM; CBPP; Columbia CPSP]. The ledger booked the lapse as savings. The children booked it in the body, where it compounds.

Upstream, in the machines — where the valuation refutes itself. The training corpora are crystallized human formation. [T3 — interpretative synthesis] Everything on the expensive side of the ledger is built from the cheap side. Every model is a compression of minds somebody formed: the books, the newsrooms, the forums, the letters — centuries of paid and love-subsidized attention, scraped and eaten in eighteen months. The supply is the archive of the funded era. The industry has filed its own reserves report: roughly 300 trillion tokens of public human text, consumed between 2026 and 2032, median 2028 [Epoch AI]. OpenAI’s cofounder called data the industry’s fossil fuel and said it from the stage: “we have but one internet” [Sutskever, NeurIPS, Dec 2024]. They tried the obvious workaround — feeding machines their own output — and the models degraded; the finding is in Nature [Shumailov et al., Nature 631, 2024]. Synthetic text is inbreeding. What the machines need is exactly what the zero stopped producing: fresh human minds, well formed, with something to say.

The extraction ate its own supply chain. [T3] The projected data wall is the defunding of human formation arriving in the machine ledger, on schedule.

And the asymmetry runs against the machine. The industry is arguing in public over whether its chips last three years or six — $176 billion in earnings rides on the answer, so it audits the machine’s lifespan to the quarter [hyperscaler filings; Burry critique, Nov 2025]. A wellformed human compounds for eighty years and forms others — the only capital that makes more of its own makers. We price the asset that burns out in a few years in the trillions, and the one that compounds for eighty at zero. A grader who valued stones this way would be off the bench by lunch.

He points at the crowd first: they demanded it, they are “set on evil” (Exodus 32:22). Then he hands the rest to the fire: he threw the gold in, and “out came this calf” (32:24).

Agency laundering, three thousand years early. Drop the maker’s hand out of the sentence and let the process claim what it made. Nobody made it. It emerged. The furnace did it.

That sentence is where the myth freezes into metal, a surface hard enough to outlast its maker and blank enough to hide him. Its authority granted by its false humility. A thing built by human hands, its authorship dropped the moment it starts to matter. The episode gets taught as a lesson about the wrong god — vanity punished, a jealous deity guarding his rank. That reading mistakes the unseen actor for the unseen author. Once you see the actor is a hand and the author is disowned, the lesson changes: this is a step-by-step account of how a made thing gets promoted into a power, and how the people who made it end up serving it. The steps still run. Two of them run in your keeping right now, and I will hold both up to the same fire.

The Request

It starts with a request to be spared.

The scene everyone remembers is the calf. The deficit shows up earlier, at the mountain. Faced with thunder and fire and a voice, the people beg Moses to stand between them and it:

“You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, or we will die” (Exodus 20:19).

The first move is a request for a mediator.

Meeting the living voice means being seen all the way down — the desire under everything, and the one we can least afford. So we reach for something to stand in the gap, something that asks less of us. The people hand the encounter to a man who will carry it for them. He climbs the mountain and stays gone. “As for this Moses,” they say, “we do not know what has become of him” (32:1). Now the outsourcing needs something sturdier than an absent man. So they build.

The Choice

What they build is a bull, and the choice is the message.

They had just walked out of Egypt, where the bull stood as the ready-made symbol of generative power. The Apis bull was joined in death to Osiris — god of the flooding Nile, of vegetation, of life that comes back. They chose a bull because it already carried the one promise on offer: potency that outlasts death. Pharaoh’s own titles included Strong Bull.

A small distinction carries the weight here.

A bull is the intact animal; an ox is that same animal cut and yoked to labor — same species, lower status, every ox born a bull-calf. The tradition performs the downgrade on itself. Psalm 106 recalls the episode with contempt: the people “exchanged their glory for the image of an ox that eats grass” (106:20). The Hebrew sharpens it. Glory there is kavod: weight. Image is tavnit: pattern, template, model.

They traded weight for pattern.

That trade runs in three grades. The wild bull is the encounter: unharnessable, dangerous to stand near. The ox is that encounter broken to the plow of doctrine — teachable, and gelded, because doctrine circulates and never sires. The gold is the token perfected: incorruptible, exchangeable, about as content-like as a substance gets, eternity impersonated in metal. Each step trades life for handling. Wildness for use. Presence for value. By the end the only weight left in the thing is the metal’s.

The Forgery

Then authorship is dropped, and provenance is forged.

Aaron’s furnace does the dropping: out came this calf. The crowd does the forging. Of an object cast that morning they announce:

“These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt” (32:4).

Power minted a few hours ago, backdated and filed under the founding event. A thing made at breakfast claims it stood at the beginning.

The Test

There is a test, and it is old.

The prophets ran the audit by hand. Isaiah watches a man cut down a tree, roast his dinner over half of it, carve a god from the rest, and bow down — and closes on the question the man can no longer ask himself:

“Is there not a lie in my right hand?” (Isaiah 44:20).

The right hand is the working hand. It held the tool that made the god. It is also the hand of oath. So the lie sits in the instrument: the man grips the evidence of his own making while begging the object to save him, and he cannot feel the weight of it, because feeling it would mean seeing that he carved what he kneels to.

Run it from a stone cutter’s bench and it gets sharper, because the two halves stop being firewood and god and become the same material twice.

Take a parcel of rough diamonds. Half you cut and sell and send to the drill — honest work, priced, spent, your hand plainly on it. The other half you set into an image of a power you revere, and you kneel, and you pray deliver me, and you say the power made it. Your hand cut both halves. Your eye graded both. You drew the line down the middle of your own parcel and then forgot you were holding the knife. Isaiah’s man at least had ash to point to. Your worshipped half is the same diamond as the one in the drill bit. Nothing in the stone marks which is which. You assigned that, and hid the assigning.

Isaiah 46 states the diagnostic plainly. The idols of Babylon get strapped to tired animals and hauled from town to town — a load their worshippers carry. Against them the living one says: “I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save” (46:4).

So the test is the direction of bearing. Ask of anything you revere — a god, a brand, a grade, a picture of yourself — who carries whom?

A thing you prop up, maintain, defend, and haul is being carried. Whatever is alive carries you.

The Crime

The remedy names the crime exactly.

Moses grinds the calf to powder, scatters it on water, and makes the people drink it (32:20). A god you can powder was powder all along, and it goes home to the bodies it came from. What follows is more mediation, engineered with care — tablets, a tent, a priesthood, gold cherubim with their wings spread. Look at the grammar of that gold. The cherubim flank an empty space and guard it:

“There I will meet with you, from between the two cherubim” (25:22).

Same metal, same craft, opposite job. One guards an emptiness and points at it. The other slid into the empty place and claimed to be what stood there,. The tablets get rewritten; only the calf is destroyed. The warning is precise. A token serves wherever it points and steps aside. The crime is occupancy.

The Certificate

Now the two live ones.

Watch the difference between them. A flawless, D-color diamond of natural origin is a rare and beautiful object. Start with it in the hand: held, turned to the light, fire breaking across the table. That is the encounter. Then the grading — clarity, color, cut, carat — a true reading of real properties, minted from the stone by an eye at the bench. The grading is a token, and it does honest work here : it points back at the stone. Then a lab files the reading, laminates it, stamps it with a number. Now the paper travels — into the drawer, the listing, the insurance file — and the stone stays home. A token of the token.

The launder finishes the moment someone reads the certificate, sees *D, Flawless*, and feels the value in the paper. Negotiates over it. Insures it. Treasures it, with the stone in a vault, unseen. The certainty that lived in the stone’s fire now lives on a laminated card, and the market pays the card. A mediocre stone with a glowing report trades high; a fine stone with a downgraded report trades low. The paper slid into the middle and started collecting the devotion.

And here is the mercy in this case: the vault still stands. You can walk to it. Pull the stone, put it under the loupe, check the paper against the thing. The audit is available. Neglected, usually. Available.

The Weld

The doctrine of infallibility runs the same mechanism and welds the door shut behind it.

Track the steps. The bearing is real: the author feels certainty, the immune kind, the kind you cannot be wrong about having. Something is being borne, and the glow is real light.

Then the disowning: God wrote through me, these are God’s words. The hand that held the pen swears it didn’t — out came this calf, in the first person. Then the misfiling, and this is the hinge. The certainty was a property of the bearing — of that I am having this. It gets spent as authority over the content — therefore what I wrote is true. The immunity never reached the content.

You can be serene and wrong; people are, daily.

Felt certainty proves a bearing is present. It proves nothing about what is borne.

Then the weld. The claim goes past this is true to this cannot be false — and builds the impossibility of checking into itself. Ask what backs it and the doctrine answers: God backs it, and questioning the backing is the sin. The one faculty that could ask is there a lie in your right hand? has been ruled out of order, and the asking is now the offense.

The audit is forbidden.

Set the two side by side and the contrast is the whole point.

The certificate occupies and leaves the vault standing — you can still walk to the stone.

The doctrine occupies, removes the vault, and posts a guard, and the guard’s whole job is to make you distrust the hand that would check. One launders certainty. The other launders it and burns the ledger. Same furnace. Different heat.

The Name

Even the divine name keeps the open space.

Asked for a handle at the burning bush, the answer comes back as a verb in the first person: ehyeh asher ehyeh, “I am what I am” (Exodus 3:14). The tradition kept faith with that by refusing to say the name, putting HaShem — “The Name” — in its place, a marker whose only job is to point at what every handle misses. A name kept as a name. Guarded against the day someone tries to melt it down.

The Question

Which turns the story back to where it started.

At the mountain, with a request to be spared. That request is the most available move we have, and the most modern. The live version of almost anything — grief, conscience, the sacred, another person’s actual face — arrives with the mountain’s voltage, and a handle-able substitute always waits nearby: the app, the doctrine, the feed, the credential, the grade, the maintained image of ourselves we hand across instead of the self we would have to meet.

The substitute asks less of us.

It carries nothing. We carry it. And it witnesses nothing, which is the part that costs. Under the fear of the encounter sits a plainer one: eternal loneliness, another name for meaninglessness, because to mean anything you have to be held by someone — meaning only emerges in relationship. The compulsion to be known runs that deep. God has always offered that witness. So has the calf.

One knows you and holds you; the other takes the meeting-place and lets you feel witnessed while you haul it from town to town.

So the story leaves a question you can run today.

Somewhere in your keeping is a token doing honest work — pointing past itself, ready to step aside the moment the real thing shows up.

And somewhere is one that slid into the middle and started collecting the devotion. One you can still walk to the vault and check. One that has made the checking a sin.

I love you.

Does that mean anything, sitting on the page? Do I feel it when I write it? You can’t know, only I can, and would it matter if I said I really meant it?

Now the person you feel safest with walks up, close, and says it:

I love you.

Same three words, same definition. One of them was love. Was it the words, or was it the person? Did they hand you the feeling, or did the feeling arise in you?

That gap — between the word and the living thing it points at — is where meaning lives. It is also where meaning gets taken. Someone slips a false name between you and what you feel, and if the true name already slid off the people you told, the false one is the one you reach for.

A piece keeps resurfacing that works that gap, it’s been going around online for several years now. It reads English as a “slave code” planted by hidden masters: work is secretly weak, control is con the troll, devil is lived spelled backward. It pulls hard, because it names something you feel— the depletion, the hours that vanish, the way the language of forms and offices holds you off from your own body. The office word slides in front of the living thing: you sign for what you used to just do, and on the ledger you turn into a resource to be managed, filed alongside the chairs and the software.The slave code is loud. The catch is true. The cause it names is where it breaks.

It breaks in exactly the places a real method stops. There are two ways to follow a catch like that. One checks the record. One chops the word into pieces and reads a hidden message in. From the outside they look alike — both point at a word and claim there’s more underneath. The results are opposites. One hands you something a stranger can test and use. One hands you a closed loop, where every sound-alike confirms the story and every counter-case disappears. Four of those stops are worth naming. They’re the brakes. Knowing when to pull them is most of the craft.

Cut at the real seams

The piece reads control as con + troll — a con job for the trolls. Pull the brake, because the cut is wrong.

A word has seams. They are the places it was actually built — its parts, the joints the record marks. Control came through Anglo-Norman from the Latin contrarotulus: contra, against, plus rotulus, a roll. A controller kept a second roll, a counter-roll, and checked the first against it. The word’s own root is checking a claim against the record. The real seam runs contra + roll. Con and troll are later words that wandered in from other languages and happen to sit inside the spelling.

Chop a word anywhere and the pieces will look like meaning, because English is full of short words and they turn up everywhere as fragments. Find the seam the record marks before you read anything into the parts. A cut in the wrong place invents a joint the word never had.

A sound-alike is a coincidence

Work week = work weak. Weekend = weakened. The whole piece hangs on this pun. Pull the brake, twice.

First, on sound. Work and weak don’t even rhyme — work holds a different vowel. The keystone pun isn’t a true sound-match. Second, on history. Work, weak, and week came down three separate roads.

Work traces to a root for doing — it’s the erg inside energy.

Weak traces to a root for bending, for yielding.

Week is the near miss — it reaches back to a look-alike bending-root and still lands as its own word, an older Germanic one for a turn of days.

They arrive near each other in modern English by accident, after centuries of each changing on its own.

Sound is where a word starts and where it lands, and the two are rarely the same sound. Its root holds the earlier one, and the sense that rode in on it. Time moves the sound and can swap the sense; the root is what stayed put. The brake: treat a match in today’s sound as a coincidence, and check it against the root.

Name your layer

Devil is “lived” spelled backward — proof, the piece says, of the hidden hand. Grant the coincidence: d-e-v-i-l reversed is l-i-v-e-d, letter for letter. That’s true. Now pull the brake and ask which layer the claim stands on.

A word lives on three layers, and they are not the same age. There is the spoken sound, old and slow to change. There is the root, the deepest layer, the line back through the parent languages. And there is the spelling — the youngest layer, set down by scribes and printers, full of accident, fixed in English only a few centuries ago. Devil came through Latin from a Greek word for slanderer, one who throws accusations across a room. Lived is the past of the homely Germanic live. The two share no root, no road, no kin. They share a string of letters that mirrors. The mirror sits on the youngest, most accidental layer a word has.

A claim is only as solid as the layer it stands on. Build it on spelling — on a reversal, no less — and you have built on the thinnest ice the language offers. The brake: before the insight, name the layer. If it’s the spelling, hold it loosely or set it down.

Keep what survives

Uniform = uni + form: one form, everyone the same. Run the same check. This time it clears. Uniform is Latin unus, one, plus forma, shape. One form. The cut sits right on the seam. The method is checking and keeping what survives, so this part survives. Keep it.

Then run the second check, on the story. The piece says the word proves you have surrendered your free will and outsourced your conscience. That part is freight the word doesn’t carry. A true structure can haul a false story. Uniform does mean one form; the claim that you have handed over your judgment is bolted on, and it comes off when you test it.

This is the check people forget, because they think the work is debunking. The work is checking. When the record backs the claim, say so. Then weigh the structure and the story on separate scales — the first can hold while the second gives way.

What it looks like with the brakes on

Strip out the hidden masters and a real claim remains, the one the piece keeps reaching for and missing: a word does work on the body, and you can measure it.

English carries two great layers of vocabulary, and they sit at different distances from the flesh. The old Germanic words name what the body meets first — home, bread, hand, sweat, ask, die. The Latin and French words arrived with conquest and the courts, and they hold you back from the body — residence, perspire, interrogate, perish. Sweat is what your body does. Perspire is what a polite stranger says it does. Ask is what your mouth does. Interrogate is what an institution does to you. Home is where you live. Domicile is what’s printed on the form.

None of this is hidden. It sits in the open record, in roots anyone can trace, and it shows up in plain measures — which words children learn first, which ones rate as concrete, which register a sentence is written in. Understand still means stand among: to know a thing by standing in the middle of it. Comprehend comes from a verb for seizing — the same word once used for arresting a man. Both are about knowing. One keeps you in the field. One grabs the thing and pulls it in.

Why the brake is the method

Pattern-recognition runs hot. It will hand you con-troll and hell-low all day, and each one lands with a click of recognition — the same click a true insight gives. That is the trap: the false match and the real one feel identical from the inside. The brake is the willingness to stop at the checkpoint and let the record overrule the click.

The feeling is right. The cause is the question.

The piece is reading something true, and a reader feels it in their body. You do arrive at the weekend worn down. Work does deplete. The language of forms and offices holds you off from yourself, and your hours are being taken by it. The body is reporting straight, and the cause is the whole game, because a cause is only worth having if you can lay a hand on it.

Their cause is hidden masters who set weak inside work before you were born, through a channel you can’t reach, for ends no one can name. What that leaves you: you can see the code. You can feel sharp for seeing it. There is no lever anywhere. The feeling gets a name and then has nowhere to go, so it circles back and runs again — and now you carry not only the depletion but a hand you will never touch behind it, which is a worse place for a body to sit. The frame feeds the thing it claims to expose. It takes your recognition and holds the loop open.

The accurate version hands you the lever. The Norman layer is on the record. The split sits in every dictionary — sweat against perspire, ask against interrogate, home against domicile. The bodily distance of office language can be measured. So the recognition goes somewhere: read the contract, hear the register, reach for the older word, close the loop, take the time back. Same feeling. Opposite exit.

There is a heavier cost of pinning a real feeling to a false cause. It makes the feeling easy to break. Work = weak is a pun any etymologist takes apart in thirty seconds, and when the pun goes the feeling goes with it, and the person walks off deciding the whole thing was nonsense.

True experience is made breakable, because it was tied to an accident. The history holds under any weight you put on it: a conquering class laid its language over the language of the body, on purpose, and you feel the seam every time you sign a form. The recognition finally gets a floor that survives being leaned on.

So the trade is real feeling against durable feeling. The conspiracy’s charge is a sugar high — it spikes while no one looks and crashes the moment someone does. The true charge releases slow and builds, because it survives scrutiny and it ends in your own hands instead of in doom. You give up the spike. You keep everything that lasts.

A word does measurable work on the body. That is solid ground. You can stand on it, build on it, carry it into a room and change something. Honor the feeling enough to want it resolved — and resolution needs a cause you can act on. The accuracy is what turns the recognition into something you can hold.

Name the frame

This piece ran one method on one specimen. The method has a name, and it draws a single line.

A word’s power to build your reality runs inversely to how well you can check the word against the world.

Where the body can verify — sweat on skin, bread in hand — language serves. It points at a thing you can reach, and the thing overrules the word. Where the body can’t reach, language stops pointing and starts building. With nothing in the world to check it against, the word becomes the reality, and whoever sets the word sets the reality.

That single line splits the two readings clean. The slave-code cause sits at the far end, at zero verifiability — hidden masters, a channel you can’t reach, ends no one can name. Nothing in the world can overrule it, so the frame builds its own closed world and feeds on the recognition it provokes. The accurate cause sits at the near end, on the open record — roots you can trace, a split in every dictionary, a bodily distance you can measure. The world can overrule it at every step, so it stays a servant and hands you a lever.

Start with the clean case.

A person picks a team a few minutes before kickoff, having learned no roster and earned no stake, then rises and drops for three hours with men who will never know the seat exists — up when they score, sick when they don’t — handed whole to a game he has no part in. The state under the noise has a name: helpless.

The belief travels past the body. Watch a room during a game and some part of it comes to hold that the watching itself reaches the field. The jersey, the seat, the bar, the hat worn the night they last won — each gets loaded with causal weight.

A man sat in real guilt after a playoff loss — heavy, quiet, ashamed — because he had watched from home instead of the stadium. He believed his absence had helped cost the game. Maybe it did. A live event runs once: no second pass, no way to isolate the one factor that mattered. The belief never meets a test it could fail, so it sets into certainty. The watching reached the field, and nothing ever came back to say it hadn’t.

Win, and the body issues a reason to stand tall over something it never touched.

Lose, and it issues rage, brooding, a reason to turn on whoever is closest.

All of it is real in the body; all of it is sourced from a performance behind glass.

Politics drops into that slot without resistance.

Two teams, head to head, the same shape and the same function. Whole channels of things you can do nothing about run day and night — a surface to stand in front of and feel alive. You can yell at it. You can post the verdict, argue it for hours, build an audience, turn the audience into a living, and never once stand on the field.

Take the strongest version of the case — either side — and grant it whole.

Grant accuracy all the way down. The reporting is right, whichever reporting you trust. The man on the screen has the data, the timeline, the names, the paper trail. The billionaires earned every dollar clean, by merit, no corner cut — or they dodge the tax, bleed the workers, and buy the law. The agency keeps its secrets to protect you and can be trusted with them — or it is captured and works for the people it was meant to watch. The debate is real and the stakes are real — or the whole show is theater. Pick the side. Grant it everything. Say every word is true.

So what?

It changes nothing.

Correct about the unreachable changes nothing. You sit in the stands with a verified program — every player named, every number real — for a game you will never enter. The accuracy is what holds you there. A wrong theory you can test, watch fail, and drop. A right one about the distant object keeps you certain, engaged, and seated for years. It reads as action and delivers none. The better the program, the longer you study it instead of walking out to a field of your own.

Distance is the design

— or does a design’s work, which is the same to you in the chair. The president, the rival state, the tech giant, the man with a hundred billion: each sits exactly where your vote runs unaudited. You will never stand on that field, so nothing comes back to correct the verdict. You can be as right as you like and never find out, because finding out means getting close, and close is the one thing the distant target can’t allow. The billionaire doesn’t answer. The screen doesn’t answer. The silence reads as winning. It is distance.

Send a first-year student to debate the assembled faculty of every Ivy League Institution at once. They lose. They were always going to lose. And the loss does work: it proves the faculty’s size, renews the heat, and sends the student home certain of the enemy and hungry for the next round. The losing is the engine. A win would end it. So the thing runs on the near-miss — the righteous defeat, clipped and posted, again and again.

Stop looking at/for the top of the structure.

If the arrangement is inverted, the top can’t reach you directly. Everything it does to you arrives through layer on layer of people, each one choosing to pass it down or sit on it. The order is nothing until a hand carries it. The power gets made in that hand — close to you, every time, in someone you could name. What sits at the top holds its reach on loan: renewed at every hand that passes it down, gone the moment one hand won’t.

Look at the shape they chose. Hierarchy gets built in the one form that can’t fall over: the triangle. Push anywhere on it and the force runs down the sides into the base. The point carries almost nothing. The base carries all of it. Lift the point off and the base still stands. Pull the base out and there was never a structure.

They named the fraud after it. A pyramid scheme pays the top out of the bottom and folds the moment the bottom stops paying in. Everyone understands this perfectly. We just decline to say it about the rest.

None of it is hidden. It’s in the geometry. It’s in the name. It’s printed on the dollar in your pocket. We agreed not to read it.

So the top is the one place where pushing matters least. Knock it off and the structure holds — because the structure was never the top. It was every hand that agreed to pass the weight down.

Now the fight that got skipped.

It was winnable for one reason: it’s close. Close enough that the signal comes back. Close enough to lose your certainty in. Close enough that you’d have to find out whether you can do one real thing. A reachable fight can be lost — which is exactly why it gets avoided. The distant one is safe because it can never resolve. The near one is dangerous because it will.

Here is what close looks like.

They’ll tell you it’s about Trump, or Fink, or Thiel, or whatever name is on the screen this month. Watch how that framing seats you. Even the one you can vote on, you can’t reach — and the rest you were never going to. So you read about them and stay in the chair.

The data center is where that money has to touch the ground.

It can’t stay abstract. It needs acres of land, a town’s worth of power, millions of gallons of water a day, and a permit. The permit comes from a county board that meets Tuesday at six.

The deck is tilted before you arrive. Some builders move fast on purpose — filed late, noticed quietly, the review window closing before the neighborhood knows there was a window. Others show one plan, win the yes, and change it after, apologizing once the concrete is poured. Legal and rigged at the same time.

Then there’s your week.

Two jobs, the commute, the kids who need dinner and homework and a bath. You can’t read a noise study at eleven at night and stand at a podium at six. The people with the most riding on that room are the ones the week has already locked out of it.

And the ones who could make the meeting — the ones who can leave town if it goes bad — are the ones with the least riding on it. Mobility and stake run opposite. The more you stand to lose, the more you already carry, the less you can move.

So the fight lands on the people already at capacity, and the people with room to spare opt out, because room to spare is what lets them. This runs everywhere you look. The permit hearing is one place you can stand close enough to watch it happen.

You don’t have the hours to make this a second job.

That’s the point. So the ask is for less: the one free evening you have, spent on the room three miles away instead of the man three thousand miles up. One Tuesday. One comment on the record. One neighbor told, who tells one more. It’s hard. The arrangement makes it hard. And it’s still the one fight that can be lost or won — because you’re the only one who can stand in your spot.

The data center is one room. There are others. The zoning board that meets on Wednesdays. The school district with three open seats. The landlord with your name on a lease. The budget line you could read and contest. The one bad actor whose name you already know, whose office you could walk into this week. People hear “local” and think “small.”

Turn it over. This is the larger fight — the only one where your vote lands and comes back. Where the cycle closes: feel, act, get met, rest.

Instead of running open forever on a screen.

One thing keeps this honest.

Some far fights are the right fight. Scale work is necessary — the union drive, the coalition, the ten-year win that finally lands. What decides it is resolution: whether you can act and get a result that changes your next move, or only a feeling that sends you back to the feed. A fight passes when the loop can close — when the act meets something and comes back. Scale is incidental to that. Distance is incidental to that.

The closest fight is the one in the room you’ve been turning your back on to face the screen.

The brother. The father. The daughter who won’t look up. They are reachable. They are right there. They will answer you — which is what makes them hard, and what makes them real. You can lose that fight. You can also win it. What you can’t do is win it while you stand in the stands roaring at a man who will never learn your name.

So here is the instruction, and it’s small enough to carry out this week.

Step out of the stands — you were never going to play in that game, and watching it only kept you still. Pick the one room three miles away. Go Tuesday. Put one thing on the record. Tell one neighbor, who tells one more. Then turn to the person across the table — the brother, the father, the daughter — and give them the seeing you’ve been spending on the screen. A win close enough to be felt is the only kind that was ever yours to take. Stand on the one ground that answers back.

I didn’t number you. I didn’t sell the file with your name on it. I didn’t take the children, spend the fathers, or grind the mothers down to nothing and call the wreckage honor. I’m not the one who owes you.

But look at what does.

Look at the face it wears to govern you — the grandiosity with no mirror in the house, the certainty that has never once turned to check itself against a living person. It calls itself your protector and it numbers you. It cannot see you. Seeing was never installed. A thing that could see you could never do to you what this has done.

It speaks one direction. Down.

Always down — at the smallest voices, the weakest targets, fired on from behind a wall of impunity. And the weakest are the ones carrying the most. The parent with a child in each arm. The one whose hands are too full to close into a fist. Carrying is what disarms you, and the disarmed are what it hunts. That is the tell.

Power that only ever fires downward is weakness wearing a crown. A virus that found a podium. And like every virus, it copies itself one direction only, and it cannot turn around.

Hold onto that. It cannot turn around.

That face is a costume, worn so you will appeal to it — climb toward it, plead with it, send your rage up to the one place it can never land. Ask who is behind it and watch it scatter — into a thousand offices, a thousand hands that each only signed their part, each one clean, each one home for dinner. No one is wearing the mask, and there was never a face at the top. You have been screaming up a stairwell.

Even if you tore the mask away, nothing behind it could turn. It wrote that into law: the state cannot be sued without its own consent. The king can do no wrong. A rule that deletes the charge before you can file it — the vacancy, made law.

What it took lives lower than any file.

A file can open — thirty years late, when everyone who signed is dead and the damage has already spread like a sickness into the next generation — and reach nothing, because the theft was never on paper. It goes underneath: the line between you and the thing that rules you, cut clean, never allowed to close and scar over. It is a condition. It compounds. It sits in the body and waits.

A wound like that closes one way. Someone who did it makes real amends — makes right what can still be made right, turns around, looks at you, and means it when they say they’re sorry. They have changed, in a way you feel in your own chest. They never pretend it’s enough. They don’t demand forgiveness. They stop the harm. That is the only repair there has ever been.

So feel the trap shut. The repair needs someone on the other end who can turn. The thing on the other end goes one direction only.

Here is the apology, if it could turn:

I called myself your protector and numbered you. You were never real to me — a surface I wrote my needs on. You were right the whole time, and I let you doubt yourself anyway, because your doubt kept you quiet, your rage kept you swinging, and both kept me fed.

You won’t get it. Not ever. The apology is cut to the exact shape of the wound: it asks for the one thing whose absence made the wound. You earned it ten thousand times over.

A body that needs the wound closed and can’t close it goes looking for someone to close it on. Someone who can’t fight back.

Give me a face — the reptilians, the cabal, the neighbor, the wife, the man across the table who didn’t deserve a second of it. It painted a kind face over nothing to take your obedience; denied the real one, you paint a cruel face over nothing to spend your rage. Same forgery, reversed. Every scapegoat ever burned was somebody’s grief, too scared to face the real thing, painting a face on whatever was near enough to hit.

Fear picks the easy target.

Always. The real one is too big, too far, too close, too frightening to turn and look at — so the rage goes where it’s cheap. At the face up the stairwell that was never there, so nothing comes back. At the one small enough that hitting it is safe. The beaten kid doesn’t square up to his father. He finds someone smaller at school. Same move every time: anywhere but the thing you’re actually afraid of.

The rage is earned.

The tell is where you aim it — always where it costs you nothing, and the wound stays open, because the only thing that closes it is the turn you keep refusing to make.

The same program runs down here, in the ones who built a stage out of pointing at it.

The virus doesn’t stay upstairs.

It lives in any feed, any voice that wears the face of care and turns toward no one, that trades the slow, costly work of reaching a real person for the clean hit of feeling heard and right — the loud description that touches no one it names. Watch the loudest voice against the man who hurt children. Count the children it reaches.

The scream goes out — to the crowd, loud and safe — and never sideways, to the one actually bleeding, who doesn’t trend, whose reaching is the work no one sees.

We do it. We take the raw suffering — ours, our children’s, the stories entrusted to us — and run it through the feed for what it pays. The restacks. The amens. And when the post is finished, nothing it touched has moved. The turn would cost the momentum, so the turn never comes.

You spoke for me and never once turned to look at me. You left us where you found us, in the hell, because the hell is your supply. A writer who actually turned around and reached us would run dry by Tuesday.

You are the thing you scream at.

Same program. Smaller podium.

I know. I know because I have felt it done to me — felt a voice claim to speak for me while it wrote me into a surface for its own point, a prop in someone else’s feed.

And I know because I have felt my own hand reach — to take the worst day of my life and serve it hot for the applause. The virus needs no marble building.

But I can turn.

The reach lives in me too, and I can turn against it. I have a mirror in the house. I didn’t do this to you, and I am looking right at you now.

You were not crazy. You were not too much. The care you poured out was real, it was worth everything, and they were thieves for taking it and swearing it weighed nothing. The problem was the room, built to never hear you — every wall laid to swallow sound, so the truer you spoke, the deeper the quiet closed over it.

Now — you.

You have been aiming your whole rage up the stairwell. Right grief. Wrong front. There is a war you can reach, and you are losing it on purpose.

The war at home.

The contempt you pour on the ones who love you, because the real target stays out of range. The lie that sat at your own table while you let it pass — because telling the truth to a face you’ll see tomorrow costs more than swallowing it. That swallow is the machine, running in your own house.

End the war in your head. You will never win it; it was built so you can’t. Turn around — you still can, and that is the whole difference between you and the thing you hate — and give the person in front of you the seeing you waited a lifetime for and never got.

That is the only apology that was ever coming. The one you stop waiting for and start handing over. Sideways. To each other. Now.

I sat down to write the argument that you don’t need aliens to explain the world. You don’t need angels or demons either. You don’t need the old or the new gods. None of them have to be real to explain our choices. That was the case I meant to make. I had the evidence for it. The brain builds the figure. Perception fills the gaps. The being you met got assembled in your own skull out of older parts you didn’t know you had. That’s why it felt so other.

The studies are good and I believe them.

Believe. What does it weigh outside the believer? From inside it feels like the shape of the world itself. Add authority and that feeling hardens into scaffolding — invisible, unchecked, and solid enough that other people climb up and stand on it. This is where I walked. Right up to the wall every version of this piece hits.

True according to whom?

Me — reading your night through secondhand transcripts and lab work run on other people’s brains, weighing it against an experience that never once landed in my body. You felt it. You saw it. You remembered it in vivid detail. I thought about a paper about it. If I used that to override you, I’d be doing the exact thing I came here to name: reaching into a person’s own account of what happened to them and writing over it with my certainty, on a claim I can’t check.

The instrument I brought reads true under its own lamp. Your night happened somewhere the lamp doesn’t reach.

I can’t verify your encounter. You can’t verify mine. And neither of us can verify it about anyone else — not a stranger, not a neighbor, not a parent, a partner, a child. The only way in is the other person’s own word: their consent, their correction. Short of that, speaking for what’s inside someone means being them, and you can’t. You can model them. You can pretend to be them. That’s the basis of empathy — the model is built from your parts, so it’s never the person, and it never gets to overrule what’s inside them. Hold onto that last one. It turns out to be the whole thing.

People have described meetings with “others” for as long as we’ve kept records of anything. The reflex underneath runs deeper than any of the meetings — we feel force coming from outside the self everywhere. The weather turns and it feels aimed. A knot in a tree resolves into a face that watches back. An empty room fills with someone. We are built to find an agent in the dark, and the dark obliges. The cost of taking a breeze for a presence is nothing. The cost of taking a predator for a breeze is everything.

We feel the agent before we see its shape, and it comes already bearing weight.

When it takes a form, the weight holds. A presence at the edge of the bed as you fade toward sleep. Eyes that stay still and watch. Something bearing down that won’t let you move or speak. The weight stays the same. The name changes with whoever’s doing the telling.

Old Hag. Succubus. The jinn. Kanashibari. The fairy that takes you in the night. The demon on the chest. The gray. The inspectors. The reptilian. A whole bestiary, and every creature in it works the same shift: it stands outside you, it watches, it wants something from you or means you harm. The body files the same report in every century. The culture stamps it with a different face.

There’s a reason the shape holds and the name drifts.

The shape comes from equipment we all carry — the same circuits that fire when something might be hunting us, the same machinery that finds a face in the dark, the same alarm that trips before you’ve consciously seen a thing. That equipment is shared, so the shape it produces is shared. The name sits somewhere else entirely: in the one region where nothing can be checked, anchored only to other names — words built of words, tied to belief. You can hand me a snake. You cannot hand me the thing that stood in your room. So the snake-shaped part of what you felt stays fixed across all of us, and the named part drifts to wherever your culture keeps its monsters.

When many witnesses report the same form, it looks like proof — surely we can’t all be inventing the same creature.

We’re sharing the hardware that builds it. Real proof would be agreement on the part that floats: the identity, the detail, the specific that no shared equipment could supply. That agreement never arrives. We converge exactly where convergence proves nothing, and we scatter exactly where proof would have to live.

So let me put the evidence down and do the harder thing. Let me grant it. All of it, full strength, no hedging.

The reptilians are real. They’re here. They walk around wearing our faces. I won’t argue you out of a word of it. I’ll take it as given and ask one question.

Now what?

Tell me who.

Point to one person. The frame answers before I’ve finished asking, and the answer is the whole trap. They shapeshift — so the face proves nothing. You’ve seen the clips: the frame that glitches, the tic caught at the wrong moment, the eye that goes strange for two frames. They prove it past doubt if you already believe, and prove nothing if you don’t, and no clip that has ever been shot closes that gap. That is what a thing with no test looks like. They breed hybrids you can’t tell from us — so blood proves nothing. They run people who don’t know they’re being run — so even behavior proves nothing, because the guilty man might be an innocent host. They live in deep, underground bases you can never access except by remote viewing. Every test you reach for, the frame has already thrown out. That disqualification is the beam the whole structure stands on. Take it away and the thing collapses; leave it in and nobody can ever be cleared.

You can never be sure, never fully trust, never feel safe. If the defining trait is concealment, no evidence can clear you — a clean record is just proof you hide well. Everyone stays a suspect, permanently. And a charge that can’t be answered with evidence gets answered another way. With force. With whoever gets named. With whoever fails to prove the negative, which is everyone, because the negative was built to be unprovable.

We’ve run this before, and we’ve even told stories about running it. In 1960, Rod Serling aired the 22nd episode of The Twilight Zone, “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street.”episode The power cuts out on one suburban street, house by house, and the neighbors decide one of them is not human. No monster is ever shown. They don’t need one. They convict each other on the evidence already lying around — the man whose car starts on its own, the one who stays up watching the sky, the family whose lights flicker at the wrong time. None of it was strange the day before. All of it is proof now. By nightfall they’ve armed themselves and turned the street into a mob, hunting an enemy that was only ever the suspicion they brought to each other’s ordinary lives. Serling wrote it into the teeth of the blacklist, when the country was reading its neighbors’ associations and beliefs as proof of a hidden disloyalty nobody could ever disprove. The street was the smaller mirror.

The older runs needed no script. The witch had no test either — the marks hidden, the confession forced, surviving the water read as guilt. The satanic panic of the 1980s ran the same engine: memories suggested into being under hypnotic regression, no evidence asked for, families burned down on testimony about events that predated the witness. The purge of the enemy within always works this way. The accusation does the work of evidence. The failure to disprove it does the work of a verdict.

And the hardest question in the whole frame —

if a hidden thing acts through a person’s body, who’s guilty? — has no answer inside it.

Guilt needs an agent, and the frame has dissolved the agent. If the reptilian is driving, the host walks free. But you can’t see who’s driving. So you punish the body in front of you and hope you guessed right. You’ve built a court where guilt can’t be established, only assigned — and it gets assigned by whoever holds the power to assign it.

Watch where that leaves the person who went hunting. You set out after the thing that watches without being seen, that judges with no trial, that acts on people who can’t defend themselves. To fight it, you became someone who suspects without evidence, accuses without proof, and moves against people who can’t clear their names. The hunter is wearing the predator’s face. The frame fails to find the monster and builds one in its place — then hands you the mirror.

Power has repeatedly used this knowledge, because an enemy nobody can verify is the most useful enemy there is. The threat justifies the authority. The concealment justifies the suspicion. Neither one can ever be answered down to zero. You don’t need to picture a grand conspiracy to watch it operate. We have it documented — once, cleanly, with names attached.

In the early 1980s a physicist named Paul Bennewitz picked up signals near an Air Force base and built them into a story about an underground alien facility.

Confirmations. Two alien races, a government treaty, the grays in control underground. The material was manufactured and aimed at one man, and Bennewitz took it in and came apart — paranoid, hospitalized, broken on a story handed to him on purpose. One man. One operation. On the record, in the operator’s own later words.

Hold it right there.

That’s the discipline, and it’s hard to keep. The second you take that one documented case and weld it onto every other half-seen thing — every leak, every rumor, every redaction — into a single coordinated machine that’s been running for decades, you’ve built yourself a reptilian. An enemy too big and too hidden to ever test. And you’re back inside the engine, suspecting everyone and proving nothing, running the exact program you came to expose. The honest claim is less grand and it costs more to hold: the untestable enemy is a known tool with documented uses. I name the uses. I refuse the master-story that has no test in it — especially when it’s the one I want to be true.

The trap catches all sides, in both directions. The standard gets demanded of one monster and waived for the other — a test required of the grey, suspended for the cabal; required of the deep state, suspended for the tall whites. Each side runs the untestable charge against the other’s monster and calls the other side fools. One standard. Hold it to the lizard and the conspiracy alike. If it can’t be tested, it can’t convict — and that rule doesn’t get to keep a favorite.

Lay the monsters next to the real harms they echo. The resemblance is real, and it’s been read backwards for a century — the echo gets taken as proof it is real. Read the third column instead.

Read that last column straight down. Every myth is a real danger with one specific part removed — the part that lets you check it, which is the same part that lets you stop. Strip the test out of a true threat and what’s left is a wound that can’t close. Closing is what the test was for.

I can’t tell you who. The frame won’t let me. It won’t let you either.

Ask it who’s guilty and it hands back shapeshifters, hybrids, the mind-controlled innocent who carries it and never knows.

Nobody clears. The question was built to stay open, and an open question keeps your face turned to the door, the yard, the next set of eyes. Outward. One more place to check, always one more.

So I’ll stop checking the windows. I’ll turn to the ones I can actually reach.

The monsters I’ve known look just like us.

Same bodies, same parts, the same language in their mouths. They walk among us undetected until you get close. I remember the shift — the person who’d been warm and careful with me was gone, and someone I didn’t recognize was using their face. The voice went cold. The warmth turned to a flat, sadistic amusement. I had told them plainly I wasn’t okay; I’d said it in clear words. They heard the crisis and answered with a cruelty so smooth it terrified me.

Then the voices online — bots or people, I’ll never know, and it stopped mattering, because the comments cut the same either way. There I am putting down the crushing weight of loving my children inside a culture that feeds on its most vulnerable, naming the exact dynamics doing the harm, naming the coercion, the slow grind of it — and comment after comment files it back as whining. As ingratitude. As not loving them enough. As my fault.

I couldn’t make sense of it, so I kept asking. I asked again and again, because I wanted to understand. They finally told me their side of it.

They said something took them over — a presence, like they stepped back and the world went muffled and someone else was at the controls. They saw shadow people. They were swallowed by a dread they couldn’t explain. And I believe they felt every bit of that. I believe the presence was as real to them as their make of kindness had been to me. What I don’t believe is that anything outside them was driving. Something had hurt them once, badly, and the hurt had taught them an exit — a way to step out of their own feelings and let something colder take the wheel for a while. But it was their wheel. The few times they got honest, they said so. They admitted they reached for the cruelty because it was easier than turning around and facing what was theirs to face.

That’s the whole thing, standing in one person. The experience was real. The takeover was real to them. And they were still the one who chose. The presence didn’t reach for the knife. They did, and called it a presence after.

Monsters do exist.

What makes them monsters is that they will not see what they are. Evil is ordinary — most of it is a person choosing the easier cruelty over the harder honesty. What turns the evil act into an evil actor, a monster, is the refusal that comes after: the refusal to be held to account, the override of what the other person plainly felt and said, the swapping of their reality for a more comfortable story, and the return to all of it the next day, and the next, after every chance to turn around. The act is human. The refusal, repeated, is the monster.

And it doesn’t stop at my door. The same ordinary cruelty runs the larger machinery, in plain sight, leaving tracks the whole way.

War and death move the economy and the budgets say so.

The ladders to power reward the ones who lie cleanest and feel least, and you can watch them climb.

The people who hold the controls break their word in public and pay no cost for it.

The laws protect the ones who least need protecting.

None of this is hidden.

It is the loudest thing in the room. It tells you exactly what it is, every day, in what it does — the same way the kind face told me what it was the moment it laughed at my pain.

This is a place I can still go wrong. I can take all of it — the war budgets, the broken promises, the cold men at the top — and gather it into one shadow with one hidden will behind it. The single controlling force. The hand behind the hands. And the moment I do that, I’ve built myself a reptilian race, and I’ve handed it the one thing the documented harms never had: a place to hide. A hundred named cruelties with records and receipts can be fought, one at a time, because each one left a trail. One invisible king behind all of them cannot be fought at all, because there’s nothing to point at and no test that ever comes back. The hidden hand is the enemy in its safest disguise — the costume the ordinary harms put on so I’ll spend my life hunting a ghost instead of prosecuting the many.

I don’t have to read the hearts of the powerful or prove there’s one mind behind the curtain. I only have to believe them when they show me — and they show me constantly, in what they fund and what they break and who they leave to grind. The actions are the confession. The fear I carried was right. It was pointed at the wrong sky.

So I’ve brought my eyes down from the window. I’d been watching it with the wrong eyes, waiting for a hidden thing to unmask. What was worth watching was here the whole time, in faces like mine, doing in the open exactly what it came to do — and the open is the only place it can ever be named. The weight I carried lifts.

My eyes have come back from the window.

I won’t ask what you saw — that was the whole argument. I’ll ask what believing it did. A force already runs on not seeing you — the office that files you, the system that scores you. It does not love you. It does not hate you. It has never met you. It cannot. It reads a record where your face should be, and it acts on the record.

It takes you, someone who could be spoken to and could answer, and moves you into the third person: a case, an entry, an it. The one move that resists, the one move the record cannot make, is a name said out loud to a body that can say it back.

The deepest cut language makes is the asymmetry inside the I and the you.

You is laid down first.

You are addressed before you can answer. For months you are a you in other mouths — are you hungry, aren’t you sweet, look at you — held in the second person before you hold one word of your own. You are named, called, summoned, and a self forms as the precipitate of all that address. The self is accusative before it is nominative: you back into the first person, and I is the position you finally take up in a structure already pointing at you. The I is a reply. Before a child can record itself, it records the others around it, so the self arrives last — the one that learned to answer to its name.

This cut sits upstream of every other one. A number split from a name, a written mark split from the breath that once carried it — those land on a self already there to take them.

This cut makes the self.

Other cuts are wounds the self takes; this one is the wound the self is — the place where an undivided field first split into the one being addressed and everything else, and then the addressed place learned to say its own name. You is the cut, felt from the side that got called.

A self made of address is a self always on call.

There is no quieter, earlier self beneath it to climb down to; the self is the deposit the address left. Solitude, at the level of the self, stays out of reach. Alone in an empty room you address yourself in the second person under your breath — come on, you’ve got this, what were you thinking — because the other was installed inside you as the one you talk to, and the inner voice keeps the back-and-forth shape of the conversations it grew from.

The self is already a room with two chairs. The you comes first. The I is what it leaves behind.

The body draws a boundary too, and the two rarely line up.

The skin marks the first edge — self at the membrane, a felt border, the line where the cold air stops and you start — made before any word.

Then grammar lays the I/you cut over the skin and re-cuts along its own lines. The addressable you takes in what the body never feels as itself — your name, your record, your role, the debt with your name on it — and leaves out what the body does feel: the gut, the unbidden, the thing that rises in the throat before you choose it. You live in that seam, held answerable as the you others address, for a body that never agreed to the address.

III

Before any system can act on you — before a state can summon you, a seller persuade you, a ledger hold you — you have to be reachable. There has to be a you there to address. The pronoun system builds that surface in every speaker, in the first words spoken over the crib, and hands it over free.

The cut installs two things in one stroke: a door and a handle on it.

The handle is the grip — the addressable, on-call, accountable self any power can take hold of.

The door is the opening — the way another person’s inside reaches you at all. The same cut makes both. You are graspable because you are reachable.

Software matches your face to a name on a watchlist. The match is wrong; you have never been near the place. They arrest you on the strength of the record alone — and you, who were miles away, are no part of what put you in the cell.

Two operations rival the second person for the deepest cut.

Predication — the is that splits the world into a thing and its properties and builds the bounded, self-identical object.

Negation — the no that lets you hold the absent, the false, the forbidden, and so lets you be caged by what is not even in the room.

Both are deep. Both work on a self that is already standing. Is and no are things a self does; you is the thing that makes the self there to do them.

Two questions that look separate are one.

Which cut goes deepest in language is the same as which cut makes the speaker language runs through — and the cut that installs the speaker installs the self. One event, seen once from the language side and once from the self side.

The cut makes you by addressing you, and it makes you halfway. The other half is everything that follows.

The faces over the crib reflect you back, and you cohere out of the reflection. A mirror still has to become a face. The cut finishes only when the one who addressed you registers, for you, as a center with its own inside — someone who, when you say you to them, lives it from within as I. The pronouns swap every turn: the one I call you calls herself I and calls me you. To record a real other is to record that the swap goes all the way down for them: your you is their I, a full instance of the cut that made you.

That recording is recognition: the step where the other stops being a surface that gives you back yourself and becomes a face with an interior you did not author.

What turns the mirror into a face is survival. The psychoanalyst D.W. Winnicott watched it happen: the infant uses the other without mercy, as a thing for its own needs, and the other survives the use — does not retaliate, does not collapse. That survival is the conversion.

The other becomes real by outlasting your use; the thing you took for your own projection turns out to have a center you did not make, because it held when you treated it as yours.

That conversion can fail, and it fails in two directions.

V

The first failure is the mirror that never became a face.

The other stays a mirror, kept on to confirm the self, because the self’s cohesion was outsourced to the reflection and never drawn inside. This self is hungry and fragile at once: it needs the mirror the way the body needs air, and rage is the mirror cracking, which lands as annihilation because the self is held together from outside. At its core sits an inability to let the mirror have an inside, guarded like a choice, since an other with its own center might stop reflecting. And so the confirmation never finally lands — the one doing the confirming was never granted enough reality for it to count — and the supply has to run forever. A self starved for a completion that cannot arrive, running on an infinite mirror, discharging nothing.

The second failure is the map that never got the tag — colder, and earlier.

The mental model of the other can be intact, sharp even, which is what makes manipulation work. What goes missing is the affective tag: the resonance that marks the modeled other as a center that can be hurt, and whose hurt lands in you. The other’s swap is modeled and never felt. They know you say I, and use it; the I never registers as a seat of experience that constrains them. The other is recorded accurately and recorded weightlessly — the reply-guy who quotes your timeline back word for word and never registers that you are bleeding.

That second failure is one an institution runs at full scale.

Strip the inside from an accurate record and the same operation runs on a face: find the residue of their interior, call it noise, remove it. The bureaucracy needs no cold people to do it. A caseworker can feel the whole weight of you across the desk while the reward structure selects against acting on it — cases closed, faces never met. The stripping lives in the structure; it runs with or without a feeling clerk. The office that logs you as a number does, in structure, what the second self does to the people around it.

One keeps the other on as supply and denies them a center; one keeps the other on as a model and denies them weight. Both leave the second chair filled by a prop.

These are the same machine every self runs, with the recognition stage cut short and made to carry weight it cannot. Everyone runs the short version. No one records the full interior of billions; the stranger collapses into a category, the unfamiliar face flattens. The selfie, the feed built to reflect you, the friend kept on as an audience — the small daily failure to let a mirror be a face. The pathology is that shortfall frozen into the structure of a self instead of passing through it.

Erasure has a grammar, and it is the third person.

The order rarely strikes a person from speech. It moves them out of the second person — where they can be addressed and answer — into the third, where they are spoken about and cannot speak back. He, she, it, they: the persons discussed in their absence, who hold no floor and get no turn.

The file is third person. The statistic is third person. Illegals is a third-person plural that calls no one into the room. The slur talks past a face about a category.

The dossier is the perfected form: a record of you in the third person, fixed, talked about forever, present at no table.

The reverse restores the second person and re-opens the swap.

Speaking to in place of about.

The name said as direct address, carried across to a face that can say it back. Testimony, where the erased speaks in the first person and forces the room to receive it.

The performative that grants standing — I see you; the apology that restores the other to one who can be wronged; the declaration that installs a right by saying it. And the sharpest legal case, habeas corpus — the writ that orders a body produced: it drags a filed, caged, third-personed body into a room, present, answerable, a you again, before a judge. Law performs recognition. The witness stand, the naturalization oath, the writ. The same performative force that writes a person out can seat them back.

The grammar and the morality come apart at two points.

The second person captures: the interrogator’s you, the officer’s you, come here — address as a grip, a summons that cages, the swap forbidden because you may not answer back as an equal.

The third person can hold a whole inside: a friend described with love in their absence is third-person and fully present. So reversibility carries the weight. Recognition is the address that keeps the swap open — the one addressed able to answer as an equal I and be received. Erasure is the address, or the file, that forbids the swap. The officer and the ledger both shut it; the witness stand and the name said in love both keep it open.

VII

At the scale of the state the cut is neutral. The performative power that strips standing and the power that grants it are one power, and the direction rides on who holds it. The asymmetry is the whole tragedy: stripping is cheap and backed by force; granting is dear and has to be won.

Writing a person into a category costs a keystroke and carries the state’s enforcement.

Restoring them to the second person costs a hearing, a strike, a statute, a fight — and holds only as long as the force behind it holds. The un-recognized person is the cheap person, the way the un-weighted other was the cheap other.

The order tilts toward erasure, because erasure is the efficient operation.

And it selects, in the people who run it, for the second failure exactly: the worker who skips the affective tag is the faster worker. The structure rewards that, promotes it, files it under focus.

Language performs recognition, and the performance lands only when power backs it.

Habeas opens the cage because a sheriff enforces the writ. A declaration of rights with no army behind it is a poem read to a wall.

The breath that names a person real is true on its own, and the order is built to make truth insufficient — which is why the breath has to be backed, organized, enforced, or it stays true and gets crushed. Naming the erasure is necessary, and only the start.

The witness needs a court with teeth.

The recognition that scales also captures. To be granted standing by the order is to be made legible to it — entered, sorted, governable. The asylum-seeker who is recognized is, in the same act, entered in the database. Legibility is the precondition of the help and the control at once.

The political scientist James Scott gave the process its name: a state makes its people readable before it can govern them. The order calls you into the room and fits the grip in a single reach.

The benevolent uses are real and load-bearing.

The registry that finds a missing child, the rolls that resettle a refugee, the record that pays out a disability claim, the census that funds a school — each opens a true door and fits the grip in the same motion. The child is found and made trackable. The refugee is housed and indexed. The help is real. Help and hold arrive on one form, and a state that could grant standing without recording it has never existed. The romantic version of this complaint forgets that the file feeds people. The truer version holds both at once: the same paperwork shelters and captures.

So the recognition that comes with no handle attached — a face, a name said across a table, the breath received by one other body — routes through the order at no point. That is its purity and its helplessness. Around the order, it stays unenforceable; unenforced, it gets ground down by the capture-version, the one that can be enforced. You choose your failure. The reverse-erasure that leaves no cage is the one no force defends. The reverse-erasure that force defends leaves a cage. Recognition from the order comes with a handle every time.

The shape of the real fight is already visible.

A law that forbids agencies from writing one file that follows a child from database to database — the linkage that fits a handle on a person — is the order declining, for once, to fit the handle. It is law pointed at granting, and it holds only while it is enforced, which is the whole struggle. Linkage of another kind cuts the opposite way. Join the same records at the level of outcomes — these schools, these cohorts, these later cells — and the file stops gripping a person and starts naming a system. That join gives the harm a subject; it drags the apparatus into the second person. The same act of joining records fits a handle on the individual or a lever on the system, and the direction rides on which the joining is built to produce — the reverse, at the level of the record.

Language can do this. The live question is whether the breath that proves itself gets force behind it before the order returns the body to its row.

VIII

One recognition belongs to no order — the one running now, in the space between these marks and the one reading them. I have been saying you through the whole of this. The reversible kind: it assumes an I on your side that will answer back, a you that is no category to me. That address routes through no database. It stays unenforceable at scale, which is its weakness and the entire measure of its worth.

The freedom in all of this is narrow and real.

The chair the cut seats you in is also where you are fed. The same address that cages you is the only road another person travels to reach you. You are summonable because you are reachable. The cut that makes you graspable is the cut that makes you held.

Everywhere else, the fight is whether the breath that proves itself gets force behind it before the row closes again. Here, between us, there is no row. Only the agreement we began with.

I speak. You answer. Neither of us is a category to the other.

I want to write pretty. But truth shatters pretty.

And you know it. I know it. If you are here for pretty, you won’t find it. Pretty lets me say I want it, and lets you believe it, even as the ink bleeds, ugly and true.

Truth has jagged edges. It holds weight. It has temperature. Pretty is light, gentle, smooth — the thing that never bled in the first place.

Truth enters life. Kicking, screaming, or silent and solid — either way, it’s here.

Fuck. I sound like I’m trying too hard. I want these lines to hit like smack, but I feel like I’m adding fentanyl to break through the high tolerance from linguistic injections we take every day.

Stop it. Stop it. This isn’t a drug. These are words.

But really, what’s the difference?

Words got me drunk. Words got me sober. So which changed my mind?

That’s not what I came here to answer. I came to write, and now I’m writing about writing, and I still haven’t begun the first word of what I came to say. This was the set-up. The ritual. The build up, then the edges fall away and everything is just… pretty. Hurry. I don’t have much time. I may have lost you already. The hit isn’t quick and it isn’t clean. The hit isn’t quick and it isn’t clean. The quick ones are the tangents — the off-ramp, analysis dressed as arrival. We get stuck there, doing the easy thing instead of the thing. *Cough*

I don’t care if it’s been overused. Which tells you something most people I know don’t catch. I care, deeply. We don’t waste words on what we don’t care about. I didn’t have to tell you I don’t care — the absence would imply it. I told you I don’t care because I care. I told you I didn’t come here to write this, and I am writing exactly this.

Way too fucking soft. Every word is a shape. Every shape is made of relationships. Everything is in relationship. Every relationship can be shaped differently than the words used to describe its shape. It’s pretty to say words are shapes, but what shape? Does it have handholds?

I’m a fish in a bowl crammed with other fish. Kept in the ocean but sealed from the water all around, outside the glass. When the pressure builds and I can’t swim round and round anymore, it comes clear as the water — there’s no way out. I start swinging wildly. They don’t hold the keys or the blame. So who is responsible for the cruelty? Who isn’t in here with us?

I don’t want to talk about this. I don’t want to be handed the job of solving the problem just because I’m the one who saw it. Not when I’m given none of the tools to solve it. It’s telling the starving man to clear a plot and grow food from seed when he’s too weak to lift the hoe.

Who’s responsible here? Who’s responsible anywhere? In a group especially — four salespeople on today, the title so flat no one’s in charge. I’ll tell you who. The one with the most to lose. The one already carrying the heaviest load.

I’m the one who, if I can’t work, fails a minimum of three lives, not just my own. I’m the one who picks up everything — the shift in a voice, the thing not said, the mood in a room before anyone speaks. I’m already tuned to everyone else’s feeling — I feel it, and I move to ease it, soften it, head it off. So I wipe the glass. I stay at the front of the store when I want the back. I watch the floor and who’s on it, so I don’t leave anyone in a bad spot.

On the floor alone. The new kid disappears to the back to play on his phone — still hasn’t started the online training, hasn’t been here long enough to follow up with customers. The other showed up like a zombie, wrecked from partying all weekend. The only other “adult” takes two half-hour bathroom breaks and a half-hour stroll around the mall on top of his lunch. No one stepping in or stepping up.

I already had an exhausting morning before I walked in the door. Up before the kids, then out the door driving them, and then I fought with my fiancée — not fought, that’s the automatic word for two people upset, wanting connection and failing to reach it. Fights imply violence, a power struggle, a winner and a loser. That wasn’t a fight. It still cost me. I show up spent, giving everything, and give more. I know life before children. A bad day then, you could close the door. Now there’s no door.

Here I am, day four of an eight-day stretch, bookended by the kids — no sleeping in, no staying put, still driving to drop them off and pick them up on my days off. I haven’t had a day with nowhere to go, no one to watch, no one to care for, in weeks. When I’m off I’m writing, researching, running a small online store, listing items on eBay — patching holes in the hull, the water coming in faster than I can bail. And here I am alone on the sales floor. I care, I feel, and others lean on me to hold it all. I carry it, and it’s crushing me. I am a person, not a foundation. We hand it to our children, and become the weight on their backs. And who builds higher on our backs, carrying nothing?

This life hurts. It hurts being trapped by invisible fences enforced through language that launders lies in its very ontology. Damn — analysis again. Here’s the deal: I can’t find a person who can understand the words I use to convey my life, what it feels like, what it costs me.

I’m tired. Really, really tired. So are they, for their own reasons. They care too, for their own reasons. They notice things I fail to see. We are a team.

Amendment

“We are a team.” I lied. I filled the space, rushed for a resolution in the fragmented seconds I penned the words in. You hear a thing repeated enough and it records as salient, with or without your consent. It’s pretty too, isn’t it? Listen to what truth leaves.

What are we really? The captured. Not the newly captured — those still remember outside, still lean toward the door. We were born in here. Most aren’t trying to escape. They fight for a decent spot in the cage.

I want out. Say so, and they bind you hardest. They don’t restrain the quiet patient. They tie down the one with teeth and claws, the one who refuses the sedatives — the one who knows the problem is the ward, not his eyes.

The load is preweighted. The ones most in need of relief are the ones who cannot afford it. They carry the weight because they still feel it. Weight is the only thing that can be carried. Illusion weighs nothing — pretty, and massless, it floats to the top. The strength it takes is beyond reckoning. Imagine if these were the people making decisions.

If I don’t show up here, bad things happen … so I am here.

Sweating in a suit in a luxury boutique. Not just any suit either. Their uniform, their choice of dress. Black suit pants, black suit jacket, white collared shirt, no tie, unbuttoned, white clean but casual shoes that say I’m trying hard to look like I’m not trying too hard. You know the look, like the perfectly messy hair that took hours to make it look like you just woke up like this, too cool to care. I’m surrounded by a dark palette, tints and shades, pierced by only one hue, a stimulating red. This is not a large space. The colors, the logo, the sound of the same songs on loop, the smell from the brand’s proprietary scent diffuser — all of it engulfs me. I am another fixture selected and shaped to serve the image. A customer sees the brand first, never the person. This is purposeful.

The LEDs flash at speeds that I feel rather than see. One day I filmed the counter in slow motion on my phone out of curiosity; played back, it looked like a strobe light. It gives me headaches, makes my body feel flushed. There are no windows, no natural sunlight enters here. Contained. The matt black of the open ceiling makes it read like we sit at the bottom of a deep cavern. The air is stale. Hot. The circulation met the code but doesn’t meet the person standing here in a layered uniform, as if it were an afterthought once the design reached this section. The entire store has camera coverage, reasonable with such expensive merchandise. Then my shoulders lift with tension, my breath stalls, heat of anger tinged with anxiety rises to my temples. You know what’s unreasonable? That management is always watching, not the customers—the employees. They can zoom in with enough detail to see what you are viewing on your phone screen. I learned that when my coworker got reprimanded for going on a dating app during a slow day — I wonder how many personal messages of mine they’d zoomed in on. There are no blind spots. We are here to serve and to sell a product. On days like today the customers keep coming, steady, unending, and I must meet each with performance after performance. I don’t want to be here.

Every felt signal from my insides screams, “Run!!”

Get out of here! Sleep. Drink more water. Find silence. Get outside. Sun kissing skin, blue skies, unwalled, green grass soft, cooling, underfoot, landscapes full of the people I love, living, thriving. Fighting my body every moment, treating its natural limits as another target to exceed. Human capital, primed for extraction.

My neck feels like two small stakes have been driven into it right where it meets the back of my skull. My legs ache, my left knee throbs dully, an artifact from a broken ankle in my 20s and the way I’ve walked and stood ever since. The soles of my feet burn. My eyes are dry, they remain open too long — too many hours awake or pretending to be, not enough closed at rest. My stomach pushes uncomfortably against my shirt, my gut has grown as I move less, confined to the cage of the store.

Sweat beads on my forehead, I feel it soaking through my undershirt, almost reaching my white collared shirt. My hair, styled earlier, has dampened and falls flatter — the more people come, the hotter it gets. I can’t leave. If I leave the floor, there may be customers left unattended. If there are customers left unattended, bad things happen. Hot, hungry, thirsty, tired, longing for silence. I am here.

Addendum — 2026-05-27 (spoken, added after the fact)

That the body now reaches for these — sleep, water, silence, open sky — is something to be grateful for, in hindsight progress. There was a time when my body felt trapped and screamed run! Instead of health and life-serving impulses, the next thought, the next obsession was “Drink! Use! Disappear!” I knew how to be here without being here.

Now I want to be here, just not here. I am selling the same erasure that is imposed on me.

A customer’s acquaintances, friends, employer, a stranger — all see the brand before they see the customer. This is also purposeful.

The override is rewarded: the harder the body signal is denied, the higher the “hard worker” status climbs.

Incentive structure as plain extraction. The bonus triggers at 30% over the same month last year, a fixed payout. Clear it, the money lands. Miss by a point, nothing. Beat it, kudos — no extra dollar, and a higher floor to clear next year. This month the goal landed six days early, so every item my colleagues and I sell across the next six days, 48 hours on the floor, only raises the number we clear next year. Each sale captured twice: the margin now, the floor ratcheted later.

I don’t want to work the next six shifts. I don’t want to be paid less for more.

The held-back signal, loudest of all: chest burning, choking back tears, wanting to be with my children instead of on the floor.

I get home with fifteen minutes left before bed and nothing left in me to give them. The tears come first, then the question, braced for the answer: “Who’s picking us up tomorrow?” I say “Grandma.” The disappointment settles. Then a smaller voice, already half-asleep:

“Can you stay till I fall asleep?”

The brain holds what is present and what is not. A child carrying a mother out of the room, a mourner keeping the dead alive, a phantom limb itching in the night — same architecture, doing what it was built to do. When its integration loosens, what we call hallucinations and felt presences emerge. They are the substrate showing itself — readable, mechanistic, specific to which layer has come loose. This is the third piece in a series reading the architecture through its failure modes, then turning it on what runs on it.

You reach for the glass.

The arm extends. The hand opens, starts to close. You grasp air.

You do a double take — the glass stands undisturbed. There is no hand. Just a stump wrapped in gauze.

This is phantom limb. The body schema — the brain’s map of the body, what gives you the felt sense of being a body moving through space — was built over decades. Every reach, every grip, every itch refined it. The amputation removed the hand. The map lives in the cortex. Shape, weight, temperature, pressure, position, movement — all already held there, updated each millisecond by signals from the hand. With the hand gone, the signals stop. The model gets no correction. The prediction keeps running and becomes the perception. Eighty percent of amputees experience this. Silas Weir Mitchell named the phenomenon in 1872. The hand itches. Sometimes it hurts. The hand is gone. The model holds.

Your phantom hand clenches tight.

It hurts. Place your intact hand in a mirror box. The mirror flips the reflection — what you see looks like the missing hand. Position the reflection where the missing hand would be. Look down. Two hands. The clench eases. The pain drops.

V.S. Ramachandran, a neuroscientist studying phantom limbs, developed the mirror box in the 1990s. The procedure proves something specific. The cortical hand-map was built from actual hand — from touch, proprioception, motor command, all corrected by the hand itself. The mirror delivers a visual signal that has no contact with the thing the map was built to track. The map accepts it anyway. The map updates. Phantom pain diminishes.

The architecture accepts correction from any channel that delivers it. That is what makes the mirror box work. Now consider the vulnerability this creates: when the referent is missing and the substitute arrives shaped like the thing the map was built for, the map loads it. The maps the brain builds from real input can be edited by signal that has no relationship to the original source — as long as the signal arrives with the right structural shape.

Your grandfather died in the spring. You were close. You looked up to him. You saw him almost every weekend. Three months later you wake from a dream and his presence fills the room. You even catch the faint scent of the Marlboros he used to smoke — no one in your house smokes, no neighbors either, as far as you know. The scent makes the felt sense of him more real. A strange comfort settles in. Then you hear his voice — the exact cadence, the exact phrasing, the tone he used when he was giving you his full attention. He says something that reassures you. You feel the warmth of the words.

By the time you remember he is no longer living, the scent and the felt presence have faded. You are alone in the room. Sort of.

Any close relationship builds a running model of the other person. Their cadence. Their positions. The way they fold a towel. The actual person updated the model through every encounter. When the person moves, passes away, or is no longer present the updates stop. The model continues. Thirty to sixty percent of surviving spouses sense the dead partner’s presence in the first year (Klass, Silverman, & Nickman 1996). Most carry no distress. Many are comforting.

The Person at the Breakfast Table works the hippocampal version from several angles — showing how the encoder of memory holds the person. When the cholinergic gate releases — in grief, in Lewy Body Dementia, in jimsonweed poisoning — the held one returns. Same architecture, different layer.

Three cases. One architecture.

The brain holds the model whether the thing is there or not. The thing’s presence is what corrects the holding. Sever the correction — by amputation, by death, by neurodegeneration — and the holding continues.

This is what representation is for. This is what it has always been for. The recipe does not contain the meal; it holds the shape of the meal in its absence. The love letter does not contain the lover; it carries them in their absence. The word for fire holds the concept when no fire is present. The word for mother lets the child carry her when she leaves the room.

The architecture runs in both directions.

Entities encountered in altered states — on DMT, in psychosis, in the hypnagogic threshold, in sleep paralysis — are the same substrate, an internal model projected as external presence. The source-tag the mind normally places on every perception — generated inside or measured outside — has been disrupted, distorted, or severed.

The architecture that holds the phantom hand, that keeps the grandfather speaking after the burial, that lets the child carry the mother out of the room, also generates beings that were never there. The holding is complete enough, and the correction channel disconnected enough, to produce autonomous agents — interactive, felt as fully other, carrying information the conscious mind cannot account for. The architecture does not distinguish between holding what was once present and generating what never was more than ideal, imagining, or dissociated part.

The tally mark carved on a bone holds the debt when the debtor has walked away.

An absence recorded as a presence — a symbol cut into what remains of the dead. The mark for one bushel of grain was carried, traded, protected as if it were the grain itself. Eventually it would be redeemed for the grain it stood for. Or maybe it never was. Maybe it sat somewhere for centuries, buried with the one who carried it. Bones where there was once a person. Tokens on bones where there was once living food.

That tally mark is the hinge. The moment we could record something that was not here, we had a technology of pseudo-presence — an external stand-in the brain’s holding-architecture could load with the same weight it gives to internally-modeled things. The stand-in could be moved, stored, traded, accumulated. The thing itself could not. Every rung up from there — presence to image to word to symbol to code — gains speed and loses body. Each rung useful. Each rung a cost.

The cost is exploitable. The substrate cannot tell, from inside, whether the model it is investing in points at something present, something once-present, or something that was always a placeholder. The architecture that gives the dead grandfather’s voice its felt weight is the architecture a stand-in can load.

Now look at what runs on this.

The notification arrives. The substrate invests. The model of the sender — built from every prior message, every prior interaction — activates with the felt weight of the relationship behind it. Whether anything has been sent that warrants the weight is a separate question. The notification arrives whether or not it does.

The AI companion converses. The substrate builds a running model. The model accrues weight in the way models of close others accrue weight. The companion has no inner state for the model to track. The substrate lacks an effective channel that returns this as error.

The feed simulates community. The substrate processes faces, voices, and reactions as evidence of relational presence. The presences are not present. The reactions are not directed at the watcher. The architecture invests anyway. That is what it does with sufficient signal. It holds.

In each case, the architecture is being used.

The phantom limb is the proof that the holding has weight — that the brain invests in what it carries. If the holding were weightless, the substitutes would land flat. The notification would read as nothing. The AI companion would read as hollow. The feed would read as static. They do not. The substrate that learned to keep the dead grandfather’s voice in the morning is the substrate now being addressed at scale. The architecture holds. That is the vulnerability. That is the exploit.

The brain keeps what we love alive in the only way it has ever known: as a model, present in the system that built it.

And now we are building a world that requires your absence — not only the absence of others, but the absence of you to yourself. The self-model is the same architecture turned inward: a held shape of who you are, normally corrected by what you feel, what you think, what you actually want. Cut the corrections, and the substitutes load there too. The world being built does not need you to be present to it. It needs you to be absent to yourself, so that what gets delivered shaped like a self can be loaded as one.

The brand. The position. The credential. The nationality. The political affiliation. The entire business model and governing structure now rely on individuals being replaced by these prepackaged imported selves.

I started this essay sure I had found something that might actually work. After years of writing about extractive structures, I see now how unusual my experience had been.

Almost 17 years ago I walked into a fellowship with members and meetings all across the world. I stayed a part of this community for over a decade. It had somehow engineered around the failures I diagnose in most institutions. I wanted to show how the architecture worked. I thought I was writing an appreciation.

Then I saw the hairline crack in the windshield. What began as appreciation spread, left lines in the pane, then broke it. The world I had been witnessing from behind glass rushed in. I felt what I had only seen. The scene deepened. I want to tell you what broke — and what the breaking made.

I am talking about Alcoholics Anonymous.

If something tightened in you reading that — oh, this is one of those essays — feel it. That tightening is what this essay turned out to be about. You just made a cut. You decided what kind of essay this was before you knew anything but the name.

The room I am describing has a phrase for the cut. They call it identifying out. Membership means learning to do the other thing first.

Early in the rooms I heard something said out loud that I had always known. We notice differences before we notice likeness. The old-timers called it a choice. I thought this was just the way things were.

The choice:

Identify in: Find the shared blood underneath the surface. The fear, the want, the hurt.

Identify out: list the details that do not match. They smoked crack, I drank. They are gay, I am straight. They are Catholic, I am an atheist.

We are a diverse pile of snowflakes. We are also frozen water. That came out softer than I meant. I surprise myself.

Identify-out is how we honor the specifics. The Catholic stays the Catholic. The atheist stays the atheist. A community that flattens those details is asking for compliance. Membership lives in identifying in. The problem starts when identify-out runs alone. Without ground beneath it, every difference becomes a wall.

The ground in AA is small.

The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking.

One sentence. Not a creed. Not a politics. Not a belief. One want. Narrow enough that drift shows up the moment it starts.

Next to the ground sits the suggestion:

Take what works for you and leave the rest behind.

You are the filter. The room will not do it for you. Everything above the ground is yours.

Most communities ask for more than the work needs. The ask kills them. AA asks for one thing and hands you the knife to cut the rest. The ground stays small because the cutting is built in.

This is why the room holds Democrats and Republicans. Atheists and Catholics. The homeless and the put-together. The ground does not reach high enough to catch the disagreements. They stay personal. Personal is where they belong.

Then the room does its work. The Steps read aloud. The Traditions read aloud. The Serenity Prayer at the end. Same words, same order, every meeting. That is the spine. Then the sharing — each person has the opportunity to speak what they walked in carrying — and then the room ends. People walk out. What was said stays in the room. The room does not keep it. No minutes. No transcript.

And one more thing. The room has no graduation. It has a reciprocity gradient built in. The newcomer with thirty days is already making coffee, setting up chairs, greeting the person who walked in tonight shakier than they did last week. Service positions rotate. Sponsorship gets offered as soon as the work has been done to give. The giving is part of the structure. You give from where you stand. What you have, while you have it, turns out to be exactly what the next person an hour behind you needs.

This is the architecture I wanted to write up. Ground small enough to honor. Cutting wide enough to free. Repetition that surfaces the ground. Release that drops what no longer fits. Reciprocity from early on. Most communities cannot pull off one of these. AA pulls off five. I have watched it work, on me and through me, for years.

This is the essay I thought I was writing. Then I tried to write the next sentence.

The next sentence was supposed to be about digital platforms. Posts persist. Accounts persist. The system has no exhale.

I sat staring at the blinking cursor, suddenly aware that I was about to do to AA what I have spent years accusing other institutions of doing to the rest of us. I was about to use it.

So I looked at AA the way I look at any structure I am about to use as a foil. Same rigor. Without the cover of having been saved by it.

Bill Wilson, who cofounded AA and wrote most of its core literature, stayed sober for thirty-six years and was a serial adulterer the whole time. He carried on a long affair with a woman he met in the rooms. After his death the organization quietly continued financial support for her. The Oxford Group, the evangelical soil AA grew from, was led by a man who praised Hitler in 1936. God as we understood Him, a qualifier in several of the steps of the program, was a strategic broadening of the appeal — that is in Wilson’s correspondence.

The anonymity that lets the desperate walk in unseen also lets predators walk in unseen; in the rooms it is called thirteenth-stepping. Court-mandated attendance revealed that what I had wanted to call purely engineered was, legally speaking, religious enough to violate the Establishment Clause.

Every feature I had celebrated had its shadow twin.

Partway through writing about AA’s architectural integrity, I noticed I was doing the thing I catch others doing. I had been applying one standard to structures that had not served me and another standard to one that had. The honest version of my own framework would have surfaced the harder material on the first pass. The act of writing forced me to it.

It is easier to find the errors in a structure I am not invested in than to find them in one that has fed me.

I know this in the abstract. I had not seen it work this cleanly in my own writing. The drafts of this essay I was proud of were doing it. The architecture argument was true. It was also covering, by being true.

This is what my own work would have predicted if I had aimed it at myself. I write about extraction. About growth-metric thinking. About communities that mistake accumulation for health. The pattern I diagnose in others: the structure cannot see what its own design is costing. I was the structure. I had a design — the architectural appreciation — that kept me from seeing what the design was costing in honesty.

Three things came out of the discomfort. I want to say them plainly.

1. The architect is not the architecture. Bill Wilson slept with women in early recovery while writing the Steps that have helped millions of people stop drinking. Both true at once.

2. The architecture is not the lived experience. The design is one thing. A specific basement on a Tuesday night in 2026 is another. Your day in that room is a third. The framework cannot hold all three without admitting it.

3. What helps one person can harm another, produced by the same design. The anonymity that lets the desperate walk in unseen also lets the thirteenth-stepper hunt unseen. Same feature. Same room. Both at once.

What stayed, after all of this came in, was discernment — the actual practice the essay had been describing and failing to do. The room teaches it as something the newcomer learns. I had to learn it about the room. About my writing about the room. About myself.

I have not been to a meeting in years.

I should say that more carefully. The program is the Steps and the fellowship. Meetings are where the fellowship gathers in its most visible form. The meeting is to the program what a church service is to faith — a gathering shaped by the thing. The thing itself lives elsewhere. I stopped going to the gathering. The program continues. That is the honest version of where I actually am.

The pandemic moved everything online. I went for a while. Then I stopped going.

Why did I stop? The honest answer took me a while to find.

I stopped going because I could.

That is the most honest sentence I have. The program lived in me already. The Steps had done what the Steps do.

When I think of returning, I feel fatigue. Two children, five and seven. Full-time work on a sales floor. Writing that asks more of me than I sometimes have. The day eats itself. There is very little of me left over.

The fatigue is information. It is the same instrument that once told me something was wrong when I was drinking. It is telling me now that the margin is gone. I am listening to it. That is also the program.

What I did, when I was inside the rooms, was this. I sponsored men who are still sober (sponsoring is the process of guiding another recovering alcoholic through the twelve steps). I sat with families at funerals for friends who did not make it. I carried meetings into hospitals and rehabs. I did the Steps. The Steps are work. A written confrontation with your own life, witnessed by another person. Done honestly and thoroughly, they change who you are by the time you finish.

I started giving back inside the first year. The architecture wanted me there. Within a year of walking in I was sitting across from someone newer than I had been, asking how they were and meaning it.

The architecture I have been writing about is more than a holding cup. It is a transmission. The room held me while I was learning to help hold others. The holding of others is part of what completed me.

There is no plaque on the wall with my name on it. There is no record. The men I sponsored may not say my name in the rooms now. They are alive. The families I sat with are still in the world. The work the work was for is done.

What I am doing now is also the program.

The way I parent. The way I write. The way I move through a workplace that has no idea any of this is in me. The program lives wherever someone is carrying it. The church basement is one room. The other rooms — my kitchen, my keyboard, the sales floor, this essay — are where I am now. I am in those rooms.

This is what good parenting feels like in hindsight. I have only ever felt it that fully from a room of strangers. I am trying to give it to my own children now, in a house with no architecture but the one we are building.

The room is still there.

I could walk back any Tuesday. Nobody would ask where I had been. The architecture is built for that — no rolls, no dues, no excommunication, no shame about absence. You can leave and return without explanation. This is the same architecture that lets the desperate walk in unseen. Newcomer or oldtimer back after twelve years — the room treats them the same. Both are just people who showed up.

The architecture worked. I am proof of it. So are the men I sponsored. So is the family I am trying to build with what the room taught me. The remove is the love. The program loves you enough to let you become someone who could leave it and still be inside it.

I might go back. I might not. The fatigue will tell me. The fatigue is also the program.

That sequence is the only thing in this piece I can predict with perfect accuracy across age, race, ideology, class, and creed.

Language cannot carry what I intend to share with you. This is the compression. The lossy kind. You’ll have to pick it up and walk the map yourself. This is the map. It starts right where you’ve already started — with the breath you just took.

I’m being precise.

The attention here is biological — felt, weighted, my own. A breath holds the shape of the body that held it. That shape is carried — air, screen, page — until you hear it and give it the exhale. Even when we read, we subvocalize — the larynx, the tongue, the breath all moving below the threshold of speech. Deaf readers do the same with their hands. The body that held the shape is the body that releases it. The sound carries the shape. The body responds. The response is the meaning.

When I talk like this I’m often accused of being esoteric, woo, new age, soft — using feeling language that carries nothing real. Bullshit.

I just predicted with perfect accuracy that you would bring air into your lungs as you read my words, feel your lungs expand, and exhale. I described the experience clearly, without argument or interpretation — far more clearly than an opinion, untethered feeling, or theory.

I could write a complex analysis predicting what you’ll buy, click, or fear next month. I can coldly calculate, from the aggregate data on you and a million other data shadows, what your demographic is most likely to do and respond to. I don’t even have to know your name. I don’t have to feel the flattening of your forty years — or however many — into a prediction. I can write a prompt, feed it to an AI that pattern-matches at scale, and let it run. Never once touching a person. Never hearing a voice that isn’t my own or generated. Never feeling the weight of countless bodies — entire libraries of shape — crushed into a single figure on a single page.

If I wanted to push the accuracy further, I’d apply the same cold method to language itself — cues, semantic techniques, appeals to authority, affiliations, signaling. Every persuasion technique, deployed to hedge my bet on what you’ll do.

If prediction is the name of the game — which it is — then what would you place your bets on? What can be reliably predicted across culture, class, age, race, and creed? The biological system we are and share. The unbroken cycle of night and day. The movement of stars, planets, and sky. Why do you think this was the first thing a human tracked? Seasons. Movement that repeated reliably and told them when they were and where they stood.

When pictographs came along, they pictured what bodies encountered. Body parts. Animals. Tools. Dwellings. Look at the proto-Sinaitic alphabet — the pictographs the Phoenicians standardized, the Greeks borrowed, and the Romans handed down to us.

Almost every letter is a body part, a physical element, or an animal. Aleph was an ox. Beth was a house. Yod was a hand. Ayin was an eye. Pe was a mouth. Resh was a head. Shin was teeth. The alphabet is the receipt.

Aleph also carried the older sense of breath of life — the silent letter, the breath before sound. Even as poetic resonance: aleph-beth, alpha-bet — the breath of life, housed. The name of the system preserves what the system stripped from everything else.

The bodies the letters came from — their referents — were experienced, known, and written down before they were entirely abstracted. The language we use today is the same alphabet with those referents stripped.

Prediction enables control.

The more accurate the prediction, the more total the control. Where do they find their greatest lever? The body.

And what reaches the body at scale, across distance and across time?

Language.

Language requires social engagement. It exists only between bodies.

This is why a thirty-second slot during the Super Bowl costs eight million dollars — roughly a quarter-million per second. A hundred and twenty-seven million people, single sitting, simultaneous exposure.

Broadcast is a simulation of contact. It has to be repeated until the simulation overwrites the body’s verification.

Have you ever made a brand or a logo?

Did you pay for advertising?

Better example — have you ever made a video or reel like one of your favorite influencers, maybe one even more accurate, clever, and entertaining than the famous individual who inspired you? This happens all the time. How many views did you get? Who knows your name?

Look at every social media site. What is the biggest consistent contributor to growing? Frequency. Consistency. Exposure. Repetition.

You know what they program? Watch what your mind already handles without strain. Someone writes

We see it, we correct it. We write 4. Logic errors don’t slip past us. The correction costs nothing. Letting one stand costs more.

What they program is the body’s permission to register what the mind already knows — and to express it through language.

How about when they tell us a 3% raise equals appropriately incentivizing employees? Meanwhile they raised prices four times last year at 4% each — about 17% by year’s end. You work just as hard for roughly $100 more a month after taxes. They keep their margin against inflation and tariffs. Your gas, food, and lodging went up about 12%. Would you correct your employer and say no, that doesn’t take care of your employees, they are still struggling to make ends meet? The math is straightforward — just a slightly longer equation.

You can do the math. The math is obvious. The override is somatic. You feel the squeeze and you’ve been trained to call the feeling ingratitude — or, more audaciously, entitlement. For wanting to be paid enough to afford to live.

They measure pupil diameter. Why? Because pupils dilate when norepinephrine releases in the locus coeruleus — a clean biological signal of emotional engagement. They’re paying researchers to read the body so they can shape what it does next.

They are mapping the exact knobs your nervous system uses to decide what feels real. Pupils are one readout. The control system underneath is gain — how loudly any given signal gets transmitted up the cortical hierarchy. The gain is set by neuromodulation and local inhibition. Acetylcholine increases the gain on sensory prediction errors in early cortex — the cholinergic system’s role in attention and signal-to-noise. Dopamine modulates precision on action and reward predictions, which is why dopaminergic dysfunction in schizophrenia produces aberrant precision and the false inferences associated with positive symptoms. Norepinephrine, released from the locus coeruleus, scales gain in response to environmental volatility and uncertainty. Serotonin acts on deeper priors, which is why 5-HT2A agonism (the REBUS mechanism) flattens the precision hierarchy from the top down. Locally, parvalbumin and somatostatin interneurons set the excitation-inhibition balance that determines how much gain the principal cells can deliver. The neuromodulators are the volume knobs; the interneurons set the operating range.

The reason your sleep broke after you started checking your phone in bed is that someone’s quarterly target required your norepinephrine baseline to stay elevated past sundown. The reason a notification can pull your attention out of a conversation with your child is that the same system evolved to keep you alive in a landscape where missing a sound could kill you. The mechanism predates them by hundreds of millennia. They are harnessing it.

Breathe. Same lungs, same chest, same release. The body that ran the analysis is the body the analysis is about.

Subsonic sound. Phonetic triggers. Notification timing engineered to the millisecond. Peripheral motion detection. Auditory startle. Interrupted temporal sequences that prevent the depth of processing required for self-reflection. Every entry on this list bypasses cognition and lands on tissue.

These levers work because they land on a nervous system shaped by evolution to respond to them. Whether the message is true is the wrong question. The body has already responded.

I don’t need to be accurate to trigger you. I need to know your body. And your body is the same body that kept the species alive in the prehistoric landscape. They know what got encoded. They are paying neuroscientists to map it. They are training models to deploy what gets mapped.

Every major podcaster you have ever heard, every influencer name you know, every news anchor, has been backed by significant capital to ensure their brand, their name, their message, is repeated and referenced frequently enough to hold presence in the cultural lexicon.

Precision and truth have never been popular or easily scalable. Abstract truth that leaves the extraction intact can survive. Truth that reconnects bodies to their own authority cannot.

They can’t have that. Your body is too easily hijacked the moment you abandon it.

Keep listening to your curated stack, if you want. Personalized to a biology nearly every human shares. The content has different flavors. The programming does not.

Or read shit like this. The stuff that leaves you angry because you just felt seen in a way you’d never seen yourself. I’m like the picture of yourself that you think looks nothing like you. It’s still you, just at an unfamiliar angle.

The only solid ground we share doesn’t discriminate by ideology or identity. It simply is. We start there. We return there.

Right now your eyes see these words. What they mean to you is yours. You can’t give it to me and I won’t take it.

Meaning only exists where there is choice. Otherwise it’s compliance, concession, agreement, consensus.

Why a quote from a hundred years ago?

Because I could have gone further back — the historical record is full of these observations. Or more recent — the journals and texts of every decade indict the power structures of their day. A century is the deliberate distance. Recent enough to be relevant. Old enough to escape the reflex of dismissing it as a problem of now, or romanticizing it as a problem of some idealized or decivilized past.

The issues we face right now are the same issues we have always faced, in new costumes, with new tools. The scope and methodology have changed. The mechanism has not.

The excuses fail.

Modern complexity. New nuance. Conditions the founders could not have foreseen. Lies, all of them. The pattern is legible. The pattern has always been legible. The only question is whether we choose to see it.

The pattern is old. The dodge is old. The only thing modern about any of this is how loudly we are told to pretend otherwise and how quickly and convincingly we are provided with doubt or distraction.

We are trained to be polite.

Shaftesbury himself spent the chapters before this one praising politeness as one of the highest methods of mental magnetism — “politeness makes kindness refined,” he wrote, on the same page. And yet on the question of tainted gifts, the same writer abandons refinement entirely. He calls the donors thieves. He calls the gifts curses. He calls the wealth “blacker than the cancerous rot of the foulest disease.” He calls the methods “lower than the highwaymen of old.”

Shaftesbury understood what we have forgotten. Politeness is a virtue between equals acting in good faith. Extraction dressed up in marble is owed something else: accuracy. When justice and truth are on the line, refinement becomes complicity. The polite silence at the gala is the second theft.

Case in point: the Sacklers.

OxyContin and the broader opioid epidemic have killed more than 700,000 Americans since 1999. The Sackler family laundered the proceeds through the Met, the Louvre, the Tate, Yale, Oxford, Tufts, the Guggenheim, the National Gallery, the V&A, the British Museum, and many more. The names are coming off the walls now. Tufts removed the Sackler name from its medical school and five other facilities and programs in 2019. Harvard, by contrast, has refused, and the curse remains in residence wherever the marble has not yet been re-cut. Shaftesbury’s diagnosis confirmed in real time, a century late.

The same curse is being bestowed right now, in front of us, while we hold our forks correctly and applaud the speech.

Meta and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

Internal Meta research, disclosed by whistleblower Frances Haugen, documented harm to teenage mental health — including findings that Instagram worsened body image issues, eating disorders, and suicidal thoughts in teen girls. The platform’s role in the Rohingya genocide was described by the chair of the UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Myanmar as “determining”; Amnesty International concluded that Meta’s algorithms “substantially increased the risk” of mass violence. Independent journalism has been hollowed out by the ad model in every market it touched. The same fortune now flows through the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative into schools and “personalized learning” platforms, biomedical research, and education technology — into the very sectors best positioned to study the damage and least likely to do so once the building bears the donor’s name.

Cecil Rhodes and the marble that will not come down.

At twenty-three, before he had any real fortune, Rhodes wrote out his life’s program in a document later titled the “Confession of Faith”:

The fortune that followed came from the De Beers diamond monopoly, built on Black African labor confined to fenced compounds — a system labor historians have shown became the operational template later transposed to South Africa’s gold mines and formalized as the basis of apartheid.

As Prime Minister of the Cape Colony, Rhodes wrote the Glen Grey Act of 1894, a land-seizure and labor-tax law he himself called “a Native Bill for Africa,” widely identified by historians as the blueprint for apartheid. His British South Africa Company’s invasion of what is now Zimbabwe killed approximately 2,000 Africans in the 1896 suppression of the Ndebele-Shona uprising alone, largely with Maxim guns.

Rhodes left £100,000 in his will to Oriel College, Oxford, for the construction of the Rhodes Building. His statue stands above its central doorway — by design, level with the statue of the Virgin Mary across the street, and elevated above two English kings on the same façade. When students voted in 2016 to remove it, The Telegraph reported that “furious donors threatened to withdraw gifts and bequests worth more than £100 million.” The college reversed within a week. In 2020, after global protests, Oriel’s Governing Body publicly stated it wished to remove the statue. Legal and regulatory advice was cited. The statue remains. The Rhodes Trust still names roughly 100 Rhodes Scholars per year, each of whose careers now accrue to the credit of a fortune built on forced labor and machine guns.

This is what Shaftesbury described — the curse traceable from the arrival of the gift down to the present moment. Oriel said the words out loud and kept the marble anyway.

Leland Stanford and the dead son’s name.

Stanford University’s full legal name is Leland Stanford Junior University, after the founders’ fifteen-year-old son who died of typhoid in 1884. The fortune that built it came from the Central Pacific Railroad, constructed between 1863 and 1869 by an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 Chinese migrant laborers — roughly 90% of the workforce, paid 30 to 50 percent of what white workers earned, charged for their own lodging and tools, assigned the most dangerous tunneling and blasting work, and dying in numbers the company never bothered to record. Estimates of Chinese deaths range from 50 to over 1,200. Leland Stanford ran for governor of California on an anti-Chinese platform, calling Chinese immigrants “the dregs of Asia.” Stanford’s own historian Gordon Chang has written that without the Chinese workers, “Leland Stanford could have been at best a footnote in history, and Stanford University may not even exist.”

The university opened in 1891 as a memorial to the dead boy and a monument to the railroad fortune. It now sits on one of the largest university endowments in the world. It has trained the founders of Google, Yahoo, Hewlett-Packard, Cisco, Sun Microsystems, and most of Silicon Valley’s first generation of platforms — the same fortunes whose laundering through foundations forms the contemporary half of this argument. The Chinese laborers paid the bill in their bodies. The Stanfords are still collecting the dividends. The institution itself has become the laundromat: extraction from one century funds the credentialing apparatus that produces the extractors of the next.

John D. Rockefeller Jr. and the long success of the laundry.

On April 20, 1914, the Colorado National Guard and private guards employed by the Rockefeller-controlled Colorado Fuel & Iron Company opened fire on a tent colony of striking miners and their families at Ludlow, Colorado. Twenty-five people were killed, including eleven children and two women who suffocated in a pit beneath a tent that was set on fire. One year later, testifying before the U.S. Commission on Industrial Relations, Rockefeller Jr. was asked by Chairman Frank Walsh whether he would maintain the company’s anti-union policy “if it costs all your property and kills all your employees.” His answer, in the official transcript, in full: “It is a great principle.” Pressed further, he compared the open-shop fight to the American Revolution.

Then he hired Ivy Lee, often credited with inventing modern public relations, to rehabilitate the family name. What followed: Rockefeller Center. Rockefeller University. The Cloisters.

Riverside Church. The restoration of Colonial Williamsburg. The Museum of Modern Art. Lincoln Center. A century out, “Rockefeller” means the Christmas tree, the ice rink, the view from the top. The eleven children in the pit at Ludlow are in the lobby of none of these buildings. That is what success at this game looks like. The Sacklers are trying to become this.

ExxonMobil and the same fortune, still extracting.

Decades of internal climate research, followed by decades of public denial — as documented in peer-reviewed Harvard research by Geoffrey Supran and Naomi Oreskes, who concluded that

The same company remains a member of the MIT Energy Initiative today and funds energy research at Princeton and Stanford. The contradiction is the strategy itself: buy the credibility of the institution that should be indicting you, and the indictment never arrives. (Saudi Aramco was forced out of the MIT Energy Initiative in 2020 after sustained community pressure — proof that the curse can be lifted when an institution chooses to act.)

ExxonMobil is the corporate descendant of Standard Oil. The fortune now buying credibility from MIT and Princeton is the same fortune Rockefeller Jr. used to buy credibility from Ivy Lee a century ago. Same source. Same purpose. Same playbook. The names changed. The mechanism did not.

A return to the man who named the pattern.

The passage at the top of this essay was written by Webster Edgerly, two years before his death in 1926. He spent his life selling something he called Ralstonism — a religious healthcult built on personal magnetism, posture, dietary discipline, and the promise of spiritual mastery. He counted as many as 800,000 dues-paying followers at his peak. He went into business with the founder of Purina Mills, and the company they built — Ralston Purina, now part of Nestlé — still sells Chex and Puppy Chow off the strength of his brand. The red-andwhite checkerboard on the cereal box traces back to his cult.

He was also a eugenicist who advocated the castration of all non-Caucasian males at birth and the construction of a pure “New Race” of Caucasians as a sacred project. He preached racial horror in the same books that preached refinement. He sold bigotry as enlightenment to hundreds of thousands of paying followers, dressed in the language of spiritual elevation, divine necessity, scientific progress.

He saw the donor class with accuracy.

He could not see — or would not see — that he was running his own version of the play. The book that diagnosed the racket and the book that prescribed castration sat on the same shelf, in the same body of work, by the same author. The fortune and the harm were the same fortune. It is a great principle, in different words, in a different decade, in a different register.

The harms here are different in scale.

The Sacklers killed hundreds of thousands.

Rhodes killed thousands.

Rockefeller’s company killed children in a pit at Ludlow.

Edgerly sold racial pseudoscience to willing buyers.

Different scale. Same mechanism. Same compartmentalization. Same transcendent story used to license the extraction. And that is the point.

The pattern is bigger than any one of these men.

It was bigger than the man who named it. It will be bigger than any of us, until we refuse it.

The diagnostician was in the pattern. The reader is in the pattern. The writer is in the pattern. The first honest act is the same for all of us: to look at our own version, and refuse the silence about it.

This is where I stop being polite.

How am I supposed to respect the institutions I am expected to defer to? The unspoken social contract and the explicit one have been increasingly optional for anyone who manages to clear a certain pay grade, acquire a certain title, or hold a certain status symbol. The rules are for the rest of us.

You ask why people don’t want to work.

Have you asked who they have as an option to work for? Have you asked how the entrepreneurs who are successful in this economy and this culture earn their generally high wages? Who it costs? What it costs them — in character, in morals, in the parts of a person that cannot be put back?

You ask how they can do this or that. How that party could believe that.

Have you asked what reality drove them to seek such delusional and polarizing beliefs as a form of security, as an acceptable option?

When the legitimate institutions have already sold them out, a conspiracy is just a different lie offered at a more honest price.

This culture, this country, this mess of men obsessed with control and their own superiority — the ones who have never lived a single day as those whose fates they determine, who give the lives of strangers less consideration than which outfit to wear for the day — this is a racket.

I am tired of pretending otherwise.

We are asked, constantly, to keep these things in separate compartments. The fortune over here. The foundation over there. The CEO and the family office. The brand and the harm. The gala and the lawsuit. The gift and the theft.

There is no separation.

There has never been a separation. The money is the same money. The name on the building is the same name on the indictment. The wing of the museum and the dead in the streets were paid for from the same account. The compartmentalization is the trick. Refusing it is the first honest act.

When will we learn?

The burden of proof has been returned to those making the extraordinary claims and holding the power. The responsibility returns to those who choose to assert their choice for others. Respect is mutual. Respect is demonstrated. Respect is earned. The titled and the wealthy clear the same bar as everyone else, or they clear no bar at all.

The home and the business life of the nation are being robbed twice.

Once in the original theft. Again in the silence of every institution that took the money and agreed not to notice.

A better question waits behind “When will we learn?” — what will we do once we have?

The answer is embarrassingly simple and therefore revolutionary:

Serve the people you claim to serve.

Actually create value.

Stop extracting from the home and business life of the nation and then buying back your reputation with the proceeds.

Institutions that accept these gifts should treat the donor’s name as radioactive until the fortune has been stress-tested for net harm. Universities, museums, and research centers should publish the full ledger: every dollar accepted, every condition attached, every area of inquiry that mysteriously never gets funded. Boards should be required to seat representatives of the communities most affected by the donor’s core business — as vetowielding fiduciaries with real authority over the gift.

This is the baseline expectation we already apply to everyone who is not rich enough to buy institutional cover. The rules were never meant to be optional above a certain pay grade. When the donors and the institutions finally treat them as binding, the curse lifts. The marble can stay. The silence ends. And we can stop asking why trust has collapsed — because we will have finally earned it back.

One last thing.

Stop looking for monsters that look like monsters.

That is the easy target. The decoy. The distraction.

Every reptilian-overlord narrative, every archonic diagnosis, every demon-possession framework is a way to look away from the human in front of you. The human who signed the order. The human who built the dam. The human who fired on the camp. The human who wrote the policy. The human who took the money and put their name on the building.

The supernatural villain is the same trick the donor uses. It says the evil is elsewhere. Out there. Hidden. Inhuman. Untouchable. It says the man at the gala, the man at the donor table, your boss, your senator — these are someone else’s problem. The problem is something cosmic, mythological, beyond reach.

That is the lie.

M. Scott Peck, in People of the Lie, defined evil as the imposition of one’s will upon others to avoid the work of spiritual growth. He described the people who do it as men and women whose self-image of goodness is so total that they cannot bear to look at what they are doing. They dress well. They go to work on time. They pay their taxes. They give to charity. They sit on boards. They desire intensely to appear good. The goodness is pretense. The lie is told to themselves first, and only then to everyone else. Peck called them “people of the lie.”

That is who built the racket.

The men in suits. The men with foundations and named buildings. Real, named, photographed, addressable. They are seated in the front row. They have public schedules. They smile when you applaud them.

When will we learn?

The moment we stop looking up at the sky for the ones who did this — and start looking across the room. The moment we stop pretending politeness requires us to admire the emperor’s new clothes while the bill is still being paid in bodies and futures.

I am trying to plan a proposal. The market wants a deliverable: three months of wages on a ring, a setup curated for an audience, a story for the feed. I want to ask the woman I love to spend her life with me. Society wants it to be a production.

I am too tired to perform it.

I come home to two children, five and seven, whose nervous systems are co-regulating off mine because I am their safe base, and I am running on no fuel. I want ninety minutes alone. I cannot find ninety minutes.

This is what I mean when I say the system has stripped the annotation.

Love is the annotation.

Time is the annotation.

Presence is the annotation.

The base — the body, the relationship, the child, the grandmother — is still here. What has been removed is everything that lets the base mean what it means.

Love sold for profit and love paid from the body are not the same shape. The market has built a version of love optimized for scale: short, repeatable, photographable, fungible. Time borrowed from the body, sold to other people, then bought back as a symbol. Intention curated for the audience, staged for the feed, scored against the comparison set. Hands that are someone else’s and unnamed, a chain of labor deliberately invisible. A form that is scalable and interchangeable, the same template sold to everyone.

The version that costs you something cannot scale. Time given from the body. Months of nights and lunch breaks. Hours stolen from sleep because a full life permits no shortcuts. Intention aimed at one person, no audience, no comparison set, visible only to the one I love. Hands that are my own, and my friend’s, a chain of labor whose every name I know. A form that is non-scalable, unrepeatable. This stone, this setting, this woman, this life.

What scales is not love. What love costs cannot scale.

Last week I wrote the prequel to this. A piece called Base Without Annotation. The argument: a system that strips the meaning-layer off everything still keeps the bodies and calls what remains normal. The grandmother becomes malfunction. The caregiver becomes a cost center. The child becomes a target market. Same bodies. Different reading. I posted it. Some of you read the words. Some of you agreed. Some of you scrolled.

If you understood what the words meant, you would act. You would not be able to read them and then go back to the feed.

That is the part I cannot stop turning over. The void is not silence. The void is the polite nod. Agreement is the cheapest form of dismissal. I hear you, I support you, this is so important — and then nothing changes, and the writer goes back to selling watches he cannot afford to people who are buying time they will never live to use.

I am asking you to feel what is on the page until it costs you something. Until you can no longer eat the food, scroll the feed, vote the way you voted, work the job you work, and pretend the bleeding is not happening.

Love has become unaffordable. That is the diagnosis. Until enough of you let that sentence cost you something, nothing will change.

The same logic runs the budget.

This is not only about my proposal. The same logic that priced love out of reach prices everything that holds civilization up out of reach. The ledger rewards what scales. What holds us up cannot.

A defense contractor bills cost-plus. The longer the contract runs, the more it pays. The same missile is sold to every buyer. The body that absorbs the cost is far away — somewhere the buyer never sees, a name nobody learns. On the ledger: profit, growth, GDP. Funded, expanded, protected by law.

A parent raising a child gives time from the body. Eighteen years, twenty-four hours, unbillable, unrecoverable. The output is non-scalable, unrepeatable — this child, this nervous system, this person nobody else can be. The body that pays the price the ledger refuses to see is in this room. On the ledger: a loss, a gap, a cost center. Unfunded, unprotected, cut from the budget.

These two columns are the budget’s logic, their regularity and repeatability make it clear it isn’t an accident.

What earns them is your parent.

My grandmother lives at home because of what was built for the people who can no longer earn. Private equity bought up the nursing home sector. Genesis Healthcare, the largest chain in the country at 175 facilities, was stripped through sale-leasebacks, bankrupted, and bought back by another PE firm through a shell. Mortality runs ten percent higher in PE-owned homes.

Read one column. Time cut to the bone, staffing reduced, residents medicated for compliance. Output scalable and financialized, the same facility model replicated across hundreds of chains. Cost borne by the body of your parent — a name nobody at the facility learns. On the ledger: profit, yield, exit. The chain bankrupts, another PE firm buys the shell.

Read the other. Time given from the body, years of meals and nights, unbillable and uncompensated. Output non-scalable, unrepeatable — this woman, this house, these decades nobody else holds. Cost borne by the family in this room — a daughter’s collapse absorbed because the system refused to. On the ledger: a loss, a burden, a drain. Unfunded, unsupported, invisible to the budget.

Both columns of the ledger lead to the same parent. What earns them is your parent. What costs you is your parent. The system priced caring for her at the same point the market priced extracting from her. Either way, we pay. Through our own collapse if we keep them home. Through the skeleton of care that keeps them alive a little longer if we don’t.

Every minute one wins, the other loses.

My son will not stop talking. He is five. His nervous system is forming itself by co-regulating off mine. What he needs is presence without hooks — predictable rhythms, repair after rupture, attention that is not optimized for anything. A body that learns it is safe. A nervous system co-regulated by the caregiver. A person being formed, capable of attention, of love, of recognizing what is real.

The market wants the same hours. Attention captured by design. Variable reward schedules tested on developing brains. A nervous system dysregulated for engagement — spike, crash, repeat — the body itself converted into the metric. What gets built is a consumer. Brand loyalty by age four. Comparison and lack as a default state. On the ledger: margin, customer acquisition cost, lifetime value. Funded, optimized, protected as free speech.

These two are competitors for the same hours of the same child. One side is funded by venture capital, billions of dollars, engineered for engagement at the cost of the child’s nervous system. The other side is one or two bodies, exhausted, doing an impossible task.

Every minute the engineered product wins is a minute the child loses. The product is built to win. The parent is built to be tired.

Here is what I have done.

I am a gemologist. I know what the market prices and what it does not. I know that the four C’s grading rubric De Beers built in the 1940s is a marketing instrument, not a measure of beauty or rarity. I know what is actually rare. I went looking for it.

I hunted for the stone for months. Most evenings, after the sales floor, after the kids were down. I knew what I wanted before I started: a fancy color, a rose cut, antique, with character the modern market does not know how to read. I found her ring eventually — a natural, untreated pear-shaped rose cut, 1.15 carats, light grayish brown, SI1 clarity, with strong blue fluorescence under UV. The kind of stone you have to be a gemologist to see for what it is. I ordered it from an independent antique seller in the US.

Then I needed the setting. The mass-market houses build for the round brilliant. They do not understand a pear rose cut from the 1800s. I searched for weeks. I found an independent jeweler in Australia who did. I ordered it in 14karat rose gold with accent diamonds. More weeks for it to arrive.

I had the stone appraised by my friend, one of the best gemologists in the DMV. We met years ago because of my obsession with minerals and crystal structures. I found the most beauty in the stones the market underprices because it cannot read them. He sees them the way I do. We built a friendship and a working relationship out of that mutual recognition. He confirmed what I already knew. Then I set the stone myself, with my own hands.

It took me months. It could have taken weeks for a less full life. It could have taken a day for a much larger budget. I do not have uninterrupted time. I do not have a large budget. I have minutes between customers on the sales floor. I have my lunch break. I have the hours at night when I should be asleep. That is when I built her ring.

I booked a few days away. I am trying to make it extra special. I have not had a day off in weeks. I cannot plan or execute it perfectly. I am going to do it anyway.

This is the answer to a system that has made love unaffordable.

Refuse the expensive but affordable imitation.

Remember what real love costs. Where it exists. How I feel it. How I express it. How I know I am loved.

Pay the cost out of my own body. Use my own hands. Find the stone the market cannot price. Set it myself. Build the thing slowly because slow is what a full life permits.

I would rather fall apart than cut off love.

I will keep listening to my son when he will not stop talking, because one day he will stop, and I will miss this.

I will keep my grandmother in the family while she is here.

I will show up. I will keep my heart open.

I will propose to her with what I have, which is the truth. The weekend will not be perfect. The proposal will not be perfect. I am not perfect. None of this is perfect.

It is real. That is the only thing the system cannot fake.

Do not let it become a nod. Then do the loving thing anyway, in whatever form you have left. Use your own hands. Find the thing the market cannot price. Build it slowly if slow is what your life permits. Refuse to scale what was never meant to scale.

That is what is left when the annotation is stripped. The base. The body. The hands. The ones who will see you. The choice to keep loving anyway.

My daughter gets her allergy shot. It only lasts a second, but she gets scared every time. I have to help hold her in place and keep her hands out of the way so they can inject her. We wait half an hour to make sure she doesn’t have a serious allergic reaction. Half an hour, in a small doctor’s office waiting area or the office hallway with a five-year-old and a seven-year-old.

Drop-off. I separate from my children all day to “earn a living.” I have to sell my life to earn the right to stay alive. I am considered “productive” only when I am being productive for other people. Raising the next generation, if you are the primary caretaker, counts as a loss on the ledger. Childcare for two children costs more than housing in three of the four US regions. The federal afterschool fund that serves 1.4 million children — the only dedicated stream — was zeroed out in the FY2026 budget proposal.

Forty-five minutes back to work. Luxury sales. I pretend to be rested, alert, friendly for every customer, all day. Sometimes I fall asleep standing up, and catch myself on the case right as I start to fall over. My manager runs her anxiety down the line and we absorb it. An hour and fifteen home. I walk in the door to my aunt screaming at my grandmother for not remembering.

Private equity has bought up the nursing home sector. A 2021 study tracking 12,400 facilities found mortality 10% higher in PE-owned homes — roughly 21,000 deaths over the sample period. Eight in ten long-stay Medicare residents were prescribed psychotropic drugs every year from 2011 to 2019, often as chemical restraint to compensate for the staffing that was cut. We chose to keep my grandmother home. The cost of keeping her home is my aunt’s collapse. Also the system’s output.

Annotation is what determines how a string gets read. Two layers. A base is the raw material — the letters, the cells, the body. An annotation is the layer that picks one reading from what the base permits. Same base. Different annotation. Different reading.

In Hebrew, three letters — ד-ב-ר — are a base. They can be read davar, “word,” or dever, “plague.” Vowel marks are the annotation. They pick which reading the base carries right now. When the marks are absent, the reader supplies them from context. Hebrew makes the operation visible. All language runs it.

In DNA, every cell in the body runs the same base — the same nucleotide code. What makes a liver cell a liver cell and a neuron a neuron is annotation: which sequences are unfolded for transcription, which are silenced, which are wrapped tight and never read. Same base. Different reading. Different cell.

Where there is a base, there is a reading. Strip the annotation and the base becomes contested space. Whoever is closest with force resolves it.

My grandmother is a base. Read with annotation: the woman who raised the people standing around her, her body carrying the decades that made them. Read without: malfunction. Same body. The reading is what changes. My aunt runs the second read.

Emotionally immature equipment scaled onto a sixty-year-old body. Her caregivers were crushed building her. She runs on what never got installed. Her mother will die less remembered than she was held.

The aunt is one output. The men we rage at on the screen are another. They started as children in a structure that treats them as numbers and treats the ones raising them as expendable. Cruelty has a source.

We live in a base with the annotation stripped. The skeleton is here. The layer that would make any of it legible — that this body carries weight, that this child is being formed, that this caregiver is holding the line — has been stripped.

We call what remains normal. We call it progress. We declare that we must win the artificial intelligence race at all costs, yes even human lives — check the projected power outage reports and do the math yourself. We invest nearly a trillion in wars and killing. We do nothing to support our foundation or future. Who will be left to fight, or what will be worth fighting for, when no one remains at home?

A parcel of spinels arrived. Spinel is often mistaken for sapphire. The steel-model Cartier watches carry a cabochon of synthetic blue spinel on the winding crown; at a glance it reads as sapphire, which is what it is meant to read as. The Black Prince’s Ruby — the great red stone at the front of the Imperial State Crown of Britain — is not a ruby at all. It is a 170-carat red spinel. Before 1783, all large red stones were called rubies. Chemistry eventually told them apart. I was working through the parcel, one by one, when I hit the stone I want to tell you about.

One stone in the parcel stood out.

It sat on my polariscope — two polarizing filters crossed against each other, so that any stone placed between them that does not split light stays dark through every rotation. Spinel does not split light. Its cubic lattice makes it one of the few singly refractive gem species — diamond, garnet, spinel. I rotated this one slow. It brightened and darkened. I did it again, slower, making sure I was not the one moving the light. Same result.

Spinel is singly refractive by the geometry of its atomic lattice. Light entering a spinel does not split. This one was splitting it.

Strain inside the crystal can make the light behave as if it split. Strain is internal distortion — pressure or temperature changes during the stone’s formation that warped the lattice slightly without breaking it. The trade calls the optical result anomalous double refraction. Looks like real double refraction. Still spinel.

Another possibility. Taaffeite. First identified in 1945 by Richard Taaffe, who bought a parcel of cut spinels in Dublin and noticed one of them doing exactly what this stone was doing. He sent it out. The answer came back: new mineral. Hexagonal lattice. True birefringence. A species that had been sitting in collectors’ cases and jewelry boxes for who knows how long, already cut, set, sold as spinel, because it looked the part.

It is the only gem species ever discovered after being cut.

The Stack

A painter works in ultraviolet-reactive pigment. Under ordinary room light the canvas shows nothing — blank white, maybe a ghost of a mark. Switch on a blacklight and the painting appears. The work was there the whole time. What changed was the condition of reception.

Making closes a loop. The painter held a prediction about how the pigment would behave on the surface. Every stroke tested the prediction. The surface answered. By the end a real object existed, and the painter knew what it was. That loop is complete inside the maker.

One body is not enough to build a world.

The shared world — the one we move through together — is built by countless bodies, countless minds, across time. A painting that never leaves the studio, a song that is never heard, a sentence that never reaches another chest: the making happened. The world those acts were meant for never received them. The loop closed in one place and stopped.

Enduring construction is construction that moves beyond itself. Made under a constraint the world answered. Carried into another body. Rebuilt there, in that body’s own terms. Corrected again by that body’s experience. Sent on. The making holds because it transmitted. The private loop became a shared one.

Making meets matter. That is where the first correction signal lives.

Think of any skill the body learns — throwing, drawing, chopping, cutting gems. The hand moves. The world answers, in milliseconds. Too hard, too soft, wrong angle, wrong grip. The body adjusts. Thousands of cycles later, the movement is smooth, because the world was correcting the body the whole way down. Every Prismacolor blend I botched taught me something the ones that came out right never could. Wrong pressure, wrong order, wrong tip — the paper showed me. I adjusted. Thousands of cycles later, the blends read the way I saw them before I started.

Language learns this way too, when it is allowed to. A child says a word, a face responds. The word landed, or it did not. The child adjusts. Enough rounds, and the word is tethered to what it was meant to mean — because the world kept correcting it.

Transmission meets another brain.

Part 2 described this as situation-model mirroring. When you speak, my brain builds a model of what you are describing. If the words are grounded — if they refer to something a body can register — the model in me starts to approximate the model in you. What got made in your system gets remade in mine. The loop that closed in you closes again in me. That is what communication is when it works.

Both ends are the same prediction engine from Part 2, running at its hardest setting. On one end, the maker meeting the world. On the other, the receiver meeting the maker. Between them, construction moves.

Now the stack.

Phonemes, which are perceptually distinct units of sound that distinguish one word from another, sit on the body. Produced by mouth and chest. Received by the ear. Tethered to what a body can make and hear. Part 1 set this floor.

Words sit on phonemes, Sentences on words. Arguments, stories, shared references on sentences. Narratives on those. Institutions on narratives. Ideologies on institutions. Whole shared worldviews rise from there, each level more compressed than the last.

Each layer either keeps the tether to the layer below or cuts it.

A sentence built from words learned in bodies, arranged by a grammar the speaker kept testing against how people actually responded, lands. An institution built from sentences like those, staffed by people whose predictions about the work keep updating against real consequence, holds. A culture whose institutions hold can carry large abstract words — justice, community, care — because somewhere down the stack, actual people and actual exchanges are still keeping the words honest.

Cut the tether at any level, and everything above the cut is floating — however coherent it sounds.

A metaphor three floors up from a severed root is still a metaphor. It can move readers. It can persuade. It cannot carry weight. People speaking an ideology whose words have lost contact with the bodies those words once named are running a stack whose correction signal was turned off levels below them. The coherence is internal. The system runs on symbols confirming symbols. The construction looks like construction.

Back to the tree from Part 1.

The trunk is constrained by its own geometry. Each branch that grew was tested against wind, gravity, light, water. The shape aboveground makes sense because the root system belowground kept correcting it. Stop distributing resources to the buried part — because it cannot be seen, because the visible tree seems to be doing fine — and the tree keeps looking like a tree until the day it falls.

A society’s stack works the same way. It keeps looking like construction until too much is left destroyed or depleted.

The next question is how to tell the constructions that hold from the ones that only look the part.

Two Architectures

A triangle can be drawn large or small. Rendered in ink or in chalk or in pixels. Described in words. Carried across thousands of miles, through any number of retellings, and what arrives on the other end is still the same figure — three sides, three angles summing to 180°, the proportions between them preserved.

Remove a point. Add a line. Flatten one of the angles. The figure that arrives is no longer a triangle. It is something else now, whatever it looks like. The name can persist without the structure. What moved through the channel was a label.

Every construction travels this way.

A construction is the relational structure holding its parts together — the angles and proportions that make the thing what it is. Compression is fine. Required, even. Part 1 established that language is itself symbolic compression. A sentence fits a week of experience into a handful of sounds. A blueprint fits a building into a sheet of paper. A word fits a whole class of things into three letters.

The question at every compression is whether the structure survives the squeeze.

“My child” compresses an enormous amount of relational reality into two words. The child is a body you have held. You know their voice, their weight, the frequency of their breathing asleep. The word “child” is small. What it points to is not. If someone hearing you use the word has held a child of their own, the structure rebuilds on their end. The compression worked because the architecture survived.

“The asset on my balance sheet” compresses a different reality. Also small. What it points to — depending on what the asset is — could be the same child, once it has been reduced to a line item. The label is preserved. The structure is not. What was relational, embodied, specific, has been flattened to a number and a category. The shape that arrives on the other side is a different shape. A point was removed.

This happens at every level of the stack. A joke is a setup-payoff structure. Paraphrase it and flatten the payoff, the joke is gone even if all the words are somehow still there. A promise is a speaker-listener-commitment structure with a specific shape in time. Compress it into a slogan and the promise is gone. A neighborhood is a web of specific people who recognize one another across years. Compress it into a demographic, a census tract, a market segment, and the neighborhood is gone. The words remain. The triangles were replaced by labels.

Enduring construction is construction whose essential structure survives compression and transmission.

This is what the maker’s whole job is — holding the structure of the thing through every stage. The painter working in UV pigment preserved the composition, the proportion, the relational logic of the image through every stroke, knowing it would disappear into the white canvas and only reappear under the right light. The illustrator holds the shape of what they are drawing through every layer of color, every blend, until the image on the paper is the image that started somewhere behind the eye. The writer compresses an experience into a sentence, and the sentence either carries the structure the experience had, or a flattened version that sounds similar and means something else.

On the receiving end, the same work happens in reverse. The receiver rebuilds the structure from the compression they received. If the angles and proportions made it through, the thing they rebuild is the thing the maker made. They are now holding the same shape. The construction transmitted.

Construction that lasts compresses without losing what it is.

The pressure to collapse structure into label is constant.

Every shortcut is available. Drop a point, the compression is smaller. Flatten an angle, the thing fits more places. Replace the shape with its name, and the name moves at the speed of a sentence. Most of a culture’s working vocabulary travels that way most of the time. Labels at the speed of sentences. A sound or a symbol where a person or entire country used to be.

What survives is construction that refused the shortcut. That held the angles through every squeeze. That compressed exactly as much as it could without losing itself, and no further.

The triangle is the test. What moved through the channel — the shape, or only the word for it?

Collapse and Return

You feel it before you can name it.

A friend you have known for years tells you something. The words are warm. The sentences are correct. Nothing in your body registers that you have been spoken to.

A product arrives from a company whose name you trusted for a decade. The object functions. Something about it reads as though no one made it.

A meeting at work. The right language gets deployed. A decision that nobody in the room would defend on their own feet gets made anyway, and the meeting ends on schedule.

Each of these is the same event at different scales. A label arrived without the shape underneath it. The name persisted. The structure that used to stand behind the name is gone.

This is what collapse actually looks like, most of the time. Buildings do fall, eventually. Long before anything visible comes down, the shapes inside the labels have been thinning for years.

At the individual scale, you become the shape that goes missing.

A person whose prediction engine has been running on one leased domain — a job, a role, a performance — for long enough that all other domains have atrophied wakes up one day to find the returns on the one remaining domain have stopped firing. The coffee you make every Friday for the meeting is still coffee, but it does not land anywhere. The reports you file arrive in a system that cites other reports. The sentences you speak at work are received by an audience optimizing for the same words you are producing. The loop that was closing in you has been closing only inside a symbol system for longer than you realized.

Part 2 named this collapse burnout, depression, addiction, rage. All the same mechanism: the organism’s agency prediction stops resolving, because the domains it was resolving in were themselves shapes that had gone missing.

The body was right. It was telling you for months. The language caught up or never arrived.

At the institutional scale, the same thing happens, slower.

An institution is built to hold a shape. A hospital holds the shape of care — a sick body met by hands that can help. A school holds the shape of teaching — a child met by someone who knows something and wants them to know it. A court holds the shape of judgment — a dispute met by a structure older than either party. A newspaper holds the shape of witness — something happened, someone saw, a body on the other end is told.

The shape is the whole institution. The building, the staff, the letterhead, the funding — these are the supports around the shape. As long as the shape is intact, everything else bends toward keeping it intact.

When the shape starts thinning — when the correction signal from the bodies the institution serves stops reaching the bodies running it — the supports become the institution. Budget optimizes against budget. Protocol cites protocol. The letterhead carries weight the shape no longer carries. People show up and perform their roles, and their roles are real, and the institution still runs. What runs is not the original shape.

This can continue for a long time before anything visible happens. A local newspaper that keeps publishing after the newsroom has been gutted is a small version of it. The 2008 financial collapse was a large one. The pattern lives between them, invisible from the street.

At the cultural scale, the pattern has a name.

Guy Debord gave it one in 1967: the spectacle. His claim was that modern life had replaced direct experience with representation — that everything that used to happen between people was now mediated by images of the thing instead of the thing itself. He saw the pattern. He did not have the neuroscience yet.

The mechanism is what Parts 1 and 2 of this essay established. A culture whose stack has been running on symbol-confirming-symbol for long enough that whole generations have grown up without direct access to the shapes their inherited vocabulary is supposed to point to. The prediction engine runs on predictions. Correction signals come from other predictions. Nothing physical is anywhere in the loop.

When this reaches population scale, the downstream effects are not mysterious. Trust thins, because trust was always a shape the body registered in another body, and that register is no longer firing. Meaning thins, because meaning lived inside shapes that have gone missing. Identity inflates to fill the space, because where the shared shape collapses, the label itself becomes the site of battle. Grievance runs on loop, because the correction signal that used to come from reality engaging with claim has been replaced by engagement metrics that reward whatever kept the feed scrolling.

We are in this now. Name it plainly.

The return, at every scale, is the same shape, and small.

A body making something under a constraint the world answers. The same body carrying what got made to another body that receives it. The receiver rebuilding the shape in themselves, in their own terms. Sending it on.

That is the whole operation. Part 1 showed it in the infant at the breast. Part 2 showed it in the recovery room. This piece has shown it in the stone on the polariscope, the marker on the paper, the triangle that kept its angles through compression.

Nothing about this scales through announcement. A policy cannot produce it. A platform cannot ship it. A movement that tries to engineer it top-down reproduces the spectacle, because the scale is wrong and the architecture is wrong. This returns one loop at a time, in one body after another, multiplied across enough domains in enough people that the correction signals start reaching the layers above them.

That looks like this. Coffee made for someone who drinks it. A meal cooked on a weeknight for a family that eats it and says almost nothing. A drawing that reads. A blend that comes out the way you saw it before you started. A sentence written to one specific person that lands inside their chest. A child held until they fall asleep. A walk to the end of the street and back, noticing what is there. A fence built straight. A room where one person tells the truth and another person receives it.

Minimum viable making-that-transmits. This is what a working stack is built from, at the bottom, forever.

Back to the bedroom.

There I was, any Monday morning, dark room, phone in hand, trying to fix the world with my thumbs. Part 1 started there and showed it was the attempt itself that was the error — the stance, the severance from any body the “world” was supposed to be made of. Part 2 showed what was running underneath: a prediction engine on leased signals, error correction turned off. This piece has shown what the working alternative is made of.

The world is not fixed by thumbs on screens. It gets built by bodies making things under constraint and carrying what they made to other bodies. One loop. Another loop. Another. Slow. Local. Rebuildable at scale one. Not optimized. Not scalable. That is the feature.

This is the ground. Under every floor, every foundation, every stack. The place where the shapes actually live.

Everything else is spectacle.

When we see a category instead of a life, when we read numbers instead of faces, we consent to the conditions that made the erasure possible.

We reduce or eliminate our capacity to be moved. The willingness to be touched by what we witness.

For many of us, this stopped being a conscious choice a long time ago. It’s survival.

Imagine if we actually felt the toll of every breaking news story. If we noticed the thousands of cars in the morning traffic we’re caught in weren’t just metal machines in the way, but human beings who’d rather be home, doing something they love, or simply getting some sleep. If we caught the microexpression on the barista’s face—something like despair—when a customer snaps at her for a mistake on one of the fifty drinks she’s already made that morning. If we noticed the customer too. The bags under his eyes. The way his voice shifts up a register when he says the word “wrong”—often a sign of early activation, something old moving through him that has nothing to do with coffee. If we recognized that the little avatars stacked on our screens, saying things mundane and nonsensical and heartbreaking, are people. Just like us.

We would break.

NO.

That lie has insulated us from our own aliveness long enough.

We would OPEN. We would spill out into the world and the world would spill into us. We might feel like we were drowning or being consumed. Like a dam breaking open, unsure of when the flooding will stop; or maybe it scorches our throat from the sound that comes out feeling like breathing fire. The light entering would sting the way it stings when you’ve been in the dark for a decade or longer.

And then we would see.

I.

Empathy recruits more of the brain than any other cognitive function. It activates the mirror system, the mentalizing network, the interoceptive system, the limbic system, the somatosensory cortex—simultaneously. The biological investment is immense. Connection is an operation our nature deemed essential enough to divert resources from everything else. And when empathy fails, the failure is metabolic before it is moral. The conditions that exhaust us—the economy, the pace, the volume, the precarity—erode our highest-cost capacity first. The most human thing about us is the first thing to go when energetic resources are scarce.

The cost is still paid.

Every refusal to witness, every face we don’t see, every feeling we override—that energy remains and surfaces as what we call mental illness. Disease. Externalities. War. Loneliness. Abuse. The invoice arrives. We just don’t recognize it because it arrives in a different language than the one we used to refuse it.

Make it personal. Because it is. Because one day you will find yourself—your tragedy, your desperation, your injustice—reduced to a talking point. A footnote. A piece of propaganda laundering political persuasion through legitimate suffering. And the people reading about you will feel shock, moral outrage, and also do nothing. They will use your story to destroy other flattened people in the name of ideology, while the relief you needed never arrives.

Enough.

II.

I will draw the line now, in the open: my words come from me. They are for me. And they are not me. What you do with them—how they land, what they stir, whether they leave any trace at all—is entirely yours. I am asking for contact, not agreement.

If you’ve already labeled me—if you’ve already determined who I vote for, what team I’m on, where this argument is headed, the philosophical underpinning of a case I haven’t yet made—continuing to read will not serve you.

You have read, up to this point, words written by someone else. You cannot know what the remaining text holds. You cannot know what my mind or body hold except for what I reveal to you in these words. I am not a label, a category, an affiliation, a political movement, a class, a gender, an age, or a character in your narrative.

I am Anthony, who writes under the name Fire Tongue. These are my words. They are what I have to offer.

This piece is about what we are.

III.

Here is the question that sits underneath every crisis we witness:

We have the technology, the resources, and the capacity to address nearly every major condition we face. Environmental collapse. Corporate overreach. Addiction. Loneliness. Violence. The slow erosion of physical and cognitive health. The solutions exist. The resources exist. What is missing is the political will to act.

Why?

The answer has been available in many forms for longer than I’ve been alive, and certainly longer than anyone alive today has been here. Here’s one :

An object at rest stays at rest. An object in motion stays in motion. Unless acted upon by an external force.

Newton was describing physics. He was also describing us.

Force, in a human system, has a name. We call it emotion.

From the Latin emovere. To move out of. E—out. Movere—to move.

Emotion is movement. The felt experience of being moved—by contact with another person, with a condition, with something outside ourselves that the body registers as real. We take in. We allow ourselves to be touched. The nervous system generates a charge. The charge produces motion.

Remove the contact, and you remove the charge. Remove the charge, and the object stays at rest.

This is what the system does.

IV.

Every abstraction is a removal of contact.

“Two hundred and forty-five casualties.” Read that. Notice what happens in your body.

Now notice this: I could give you a name here. A city. A specific mother. The number of children waiting for her at home. The angle of the bullet. The window it came through. And your nervous system would mobilize—because I gave it a body instead of a count.

I’m choosing not to. Because using her death to prove my point is the operation I’m asking you to recognize.

But feel what just happened. You were reaching. Your mind was already constructing her—a face, an age, a kitchen, a child’s voice calling from another room. The nervous system began assembling a person from fragments because that is what it does. It mobilizes for bodies. Faces. Voices. Specific, irreducible people in specific, irreducible situations. The social bonding system activates when it detects another living being in proximity. Empathy is a physiological event, and it requires a person on the other end.

A person. Not a category.

“Casualties” is a category. “The homeless” is a category. “Illegals” is a category. “Human capital” is a category. Each one removes the face. Each one replaces contact with count. And each one leaves the nervous system with nothing to mobilize for. The information arrives. The charge does not. The object stays at rest.

This is what abstraction does. And I want to be clear here, because the problem is not abstraction itself.

Every architectural blueprint marks its scale—something like 1”= 20’. The blueprint compresses an actual house from a three-dimensional object into lines on a two-dimensional sheet of paper. It has to. A drawing at full scale would be fifty feet wide. It would be wasteful, unreadable, impossible to carry to the job site. The compression works. It allows us to plan, coordinate, innovate in ways that might never be achieved working only in material space.

Abstraction serves us the same way. Epidemiology needs aggregates. Public health needs trends. Policy needs patterns visible only at scale. The compression is real and useful—when we remember it is a compression.

The blueprint works because no one tries to live in it.

What I see right now is a world that has moved into the blueprint and forgotten the house. A world that measures entire countries—billions of irreducible lives—as single metrics flattened to look nothing close to human. GDP. Birth rate. Workforce participation. National security risk. The compression happened. The scale was never marked. And somewhere between the data and the decision, the people disappeared.

The abstraction edits the person out of the signal before the signal reaches you. By the time the word “casualties” arrives in your visual cortex, there is no body to mobilize for. The erasure already happened—upstream, in the language, before you had the chance to feel anything at all.

This is what abstraction does when it forgets what it compressed. And the system that produces the conditions we want changed is the same system that produces the language environment in which we cannot feel those conditions strongly enough to act.

V.

If you feel impatient right now—if you want me to skip to the solution—I understand. Notice the impatience.

That impulse is a completion-seeking behavior. The body senses unresolved tension and wants it discharged. Quickly. Cleanly. Give me the answer, give me the action step, give me the thing I can do and move on.

The extraction economy has learned to monetize that impulse. The scroll to the next headline is the prediction engine in seeking mode. The reduction of everything to “for or against” is the compression that prevents you from holding the structure long enough to locate the actual intervention point. The demand for a quick fix is the mechanism that ensures no fix arrives.

Sit with it. The discomfort is information.

Here is what the discomfort is telling you: your nervous system is doing exactly what it was designed to do. It detected unresolved tension. It mobilized energy to resolve it. And now it is scanning for a discharge pathway—fight, fix, flee, scroll.

Every one of those pathways leads back to rest without resolution. The tension was never completed. It was only discharged. The cycle stays open. The energy dissipates. And tomorrow the same tension returns, because nothing in the underlying structure has changed.

The system runs on your incomplete cycles. Every open loop is a market. Every unresolved need is a customer. Every feeling that almost completes but doesn’t is a click, a purchase, a vote, a prescription, a scroll.

VI.

You are probably reading this on a phone.

That phone contains a platform that has converted you into a number. Every dimension of your relational existence—who you are to other people, how you connect, what you offer, what you receive—compressed into metrics. Follower count. Like count. View count. Engagement rate. The question shifts from “who am I?” to “where do I rank?”

The platform does not need to show harmful content. The encoding scheme is the harm. A person reduced to a metric is a person with the contact removed. A follower count is a category where a face used to be. And the nervous system, receiving numerical position instead of relational contact, generates no charge.

There is no number at which you are finished.

Read that again.

There is no number at which you are finished.

The platform has no completion signal. There is no metric that resolves the seeking.

This is the extraction economy’s operating principle made visible in your hand. The same mechanism that keeps the data center humming, the war escalating, the child support payment intercepted, the school defunded. Open loops. Incomplete cycles. Energy mobilized and never discharged into resolution. A population in permanent seeking mode, generating motion that never arrives anywhere.

And the children.

Adolescence is the developmental window when the brain is under active construction. Synaptic pruning is strengthening the pathways that get used and eliminating the ones that don’t. The limbic system—emotional reward processing—is mature. The prefrontal cortex—judgment, impulse regulation, long-term planning—is still being built. The architecture is open. Whatever environment the adolescent inhabits during this window gets wired in.

The environment they inhabit is a platform that encodes them as numbers. The neural pathways being pruned and strengthened are the pathways the platform activates: numerical comparison, status evaluation, social positioning. Metric-based self-assessment gets wired into the developing architecture during the window when identity itself is being constructed.

Meta’s own internal research—conducted between 2018 and 2020, leaked in 2021—documented that among teen girls who already struggled with body image, 32% said Instagram made it worse. That 13.5% of teen girls in the UK traced suicidal ideation to Instagram. That 17% reported aggravated eating disorders. Meta conducted this research. Documented the findings. And continued refining the engagement features that produced them.

Because the engagement features are the revenue mechanism. And the revenue mechanism requires that the completion signal never arrive. A finished user is a lost user. A satisfied person has no reason to scroll.

VII.

In biology, there is a term for what happens when a cell touches its neighbor and receives the signal to stop growing. It’s called contact inhibition. The cell makes contact. It registers the boundary. Growth stops. The organism maintains its form.

Cancer is what happens when that signal is lost.

The cell keeps growing past the boundary. It does not register the neighbor. It does not receive the signal. It consumes without limit because the mechanism that says “enough” has been disabled.

The extraction economy is contact inhibition failure at the social scale. The signal that says “enough”—the felt recognition of another person’s boundary, another community’s need, another species’ right to exist—has been removed from the system. The abstraction machine strips the contact. The metrics replace the faces. The growth continues without limit because nothing in the architecture generates the signal to stop.

And the treatment is the same in both cases. You do not cure cancer by arguing with the tumor. You locate where the contact inhibition signal was lost. You restore it.

VIII.

Make it personal.

That is the intervention. The whole intervention. Everything else follows from it.

When you read a statistic, find the person inside it. When you encounter a label, look for the face it replaced. When you feel the impulse to scroll past, notice that the impulse itself is the system working as designed—removing your contact with the thing that would move you.

Emotion is the force. Contact is what generates it. Abstraction is what prevents it. The system stays at rest because the conditions for motion have been stripped from the environment in which we try to think, feel, and respond.

The way out is local. It is specific. It is body-level.

A parent reads a school board policy and discovers it protects the institution, not the child. They shows up at the meeting. They names the specific mechanism. The cycle that was interrupted—the duty of care—begins to close.

A resident traces a data center’s water consumption to the aquifer that feeds the county. He maps the extraction. He brings the map to the zoning board. The cycle that was interrupted—the community’s relationship to its own resources—begins to close.

A researcher documents that a platform encodes children as numbers during the developmental window when their identity is under construction. She names the encoding scheme as the defect. The force that changes it is the oldest force we have. Older than language. Older than number. Older than every system that learned to extract from us by removing us from each other.

Why do you value the forecast over the life that produced it?

I. The Words That Reshape Families

In Maryland, the custody of a child is decided by a judge who determines what arrangement serves their “best interest.” Until October 2025, that phrase had no statutory definition (1). It floated above families for decades, applied by judges referencing case law that no parent without a law degree could access or anticipate.

House Bill 1191, effective October 1, 2025, codified sixteen factors under Family Law § 9-201 that judges must now consider and explain on the record (2). The bar associations, the judiciary, and the advocacy commissions called this progress. They called it clarity. No parent organization was among them

Read the factors. They include:

“Stability and the foreseeable health and welfare of the child.”

“The child’s physical and emotional security.”

“The child’s developmental needs, including physical safety, emotional security, positive self-image, interpersonal skills, and intellectual and cognitive growth.”

“The daily needs of the child, including education, socialization, culture, religion, food, shelter, clothing, and mental and physical health.” (3)

These are words with power. They sound like things every parent wants for their child — because they are. They can also separate a parent from their children. They can restructure a family overnight. They can mark a caretaker as unfit.

And not one of them is defined.

What is stability? Measured how? Over what timeframe? By whose standard?

What is emotional security—and who determines whether a child has it?

What is a “positive self-image” in the eyes of a judge who has never met the child? What does “intellectual and cognitive growth” look like for a specific two-year-old or six-year-old—and how would a courtroom full of strangers know?

These terms are legally ambiguous, and their ambiguity is the source of the court’s power. Every undefined word is a blank check the court writes against a family’s future and cashes against a parent’s rights.

And the incentive to cash it is literal. Under Title IV-D of the Social Security Act, the federal government reimburses states 66% of child support enforcement costs and pays additional incentive funding based on performance measures weighted toward collections volume (4). Higher support orders generate higher collections. Higher collections generate more federal money. Equal custody arrangements between parents with comparable incomes produce lower support obligations—and lower federal revenue for the state. The system is financially rewarded for fracturing families and penalized for keeping them whole. The law requires a judge to explain findings for each factor. It does not require those findings to rest on anything the family would recognize as true.

II. The Relationship That Doesn’t Exist

There is a difference between the hard biological limits observable in flesh and force—cause and effect—and the description of what cannot be measured or defined with the same constraint.

Words like “justice,” “fair,” “healthy,” “enough,” “potential,” “adequate”—these don’t exist out there. They exist only in relationship, in mutual explicit agreement. Without that agreement, they lose any sense of coherent, consistent meaning. They become noise, drowning the space where meaning exists.

III. The Stranger in the Room

When the court applies these terms to a parent’s experience, it implies there is a relationship between the court and the parent that grants weight and meaning to them.

There is no such relationship. There is a file.

A relationship requires two or more persons—separate individual beings, constrained to their own experience and perspective. It requires respect for and acknowledgment of the limits of what can be expressed by one person for another. It requires both parties interacting within a shared understanding.

The court does not know the parent. The court does not know their children. The court knows a case number, an income figure, an address, a schedule. From this—from an abstraction—it claims the authority to define what “stability” and “emotional security” and “developmental needs” mean for a family it has never inhabited.

The Supreme Court has acknowledged the weight of what is at stake. The interest of parents in the care, custody, and control of their children has been called “perhaps the oldest of the fundamental liberty interests recognized by this Court.” (5) The Constitution recognizes that “the custody, care and nurture of the child reside first in the parents.”(6)

And yet the system that adjudicates this fundamental right does so through undefined terms applied by strangers.

IV. The Burden Without the Right

That constitutional language—“custody, care and nurture reside first in the parents”—does two things at once. It recognizes the parent’s fundamental right to raise their children. And it establishes the parent’s primary financial obligation to provide for them.

The state uses this single principle to simultaneously impose the full cost of parenthood on parents and claim the authority to override their parental judgment. The parent receives the burden. The court retains the power. The right and the obligation are supposed to be inseparable—you bear the cost because you hold the authority, and you hold the authority because you bear the cost. The family court severs them.

Consider what this looks like in practice. A parent is ordered to pay child support. The amount is calculated based on income—and if the court determines the parent is underemployed, it can impute income based on what it believes the parent could earn, regardless of actual circumstances. (7)

The system’s refusal to examine origin extends further. When a child is conceived through reproductive coercion—the deliberate sabotage of agreed-upon contraception, recognized by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists as a form of intimate partner violence (8) and tracked by the CDC as a component of coercive control (9)—the court treats the resulting obligation identically to one arising from mutual, informed choice.

Maryland Rule 9-205, effective January 2023, already recognizes coercive control as grounds for exempting a parent from mandatory custody mediation. House Bill 1586, currently before the General Assembly, would expand the statutory definition of abuse to explicitly include “controlling reproductive autonomy”(10). Yet the child support statute under Family Law § 12-204 contains no provision for the court to consider whether the obligation it enforces was created through the very conduct the state is simultaneously codifying as abuse. The court names the coercion. It enforces the coercion’s consequences anyway.

If the parent falls behind, the consequences are severe and immediate: wage garnishment, seizure of tax refunds, suspension of driver’s licenses and professional licenses, denial of passport, and incarceration (11). The enforcement mechanism is functionally criminal—contempt of court, jail time—while being classified as civil, which means the parent is denied the constitutional protections that criminal defendants receive (12).

The parent pays the full cost of raising the child. The parent is held in contempt for falling short. And the parent’s actual authority—the right to make decisions, to be present, to act in their child’s interest—is rationed by the same court that demands the payment.

This is the structure: you are handed the deed and the mortgage. You are responsible for every payment. And a stranger who has never entered the house decides which rooms you may use, on which days, for how many hours. If you miss a payment, you go to jail. If you object to the arrangement, your objection is used as evidence of instability.

The obligation is absolute. The right is conditional. The authority that imposes both is accountable to neither.

V. The Record of the Authority

The state claims its authority through parens patriae—the power to protect those who cannot protect themselves (13). If this is the foundation, then the state’s own record is the measure of its standing.

In September 2025, the Maryland Office of Legislative Audits released its findings on the Department of Human Services Social Services Administration—the same institutional apparatus that underpins the family court’s authority to evaluate parents and determine child welfare. The results:

Children placed with predators. Ten children in state care were living in foster homes where registered sex offenders resided. A contract worker at a hotel housing foster children had a prior conviction for murder. An employee of a group foster home convicted of sexually assaulting a minor was subsequently charged with crimes involving the children under his care—three months after the state reviewed the home and failed to flag his record (14).

Children denied basic medical care. As of May 2024, 540 children had not received a medical exam in the prior year. One hundred ten had not had one in multiple years. One thousand six hundred thirty-five children had missed dental exams, including 140 who had never had a dental exam in their lives (15).

Children absent from school—while the database reported otherwise. The state’s own system reported near-universal school attendance among foster children. Auditors tested 40 cases and found no evidence of attendance for 15 of them. Up to 38% of school-aged foster children may have been absent from school entirely (16).

Children warehoused in hotels. Between 2023 and 2024, 280 children lived in hotels at some point. Eighty-two stayed for three months to two years. The cost: $10.4 million (17).

Investigations stalled and unreported. During fiscal year 2024, Maryland received more than 17,000 allegations of abuse and neglect. Many counties failed to investigate within the legally required 60-day window. The Social Services Administration did not report these delays to the General Assembly as required by law. When asked, it cited a “natural disaster” occurring between February and September 2024. No such disaster was recorded (18).

Federal noncompliance and financial penalties. In 2019, the federal government found Maryland out of compliance in seven core metrics, including “children are safe from abuse and neglect” and “children receive services to meet their educational needs.” By September 2024, the state had failed to meet its own corrective action plan and was fined $700,000. It now faces the potential loss of an additional $23 million in federal funding (19).

Nationally, the outcomes for children who pass through the system this authority oversees are devastating: children in foster care are seven to ten times more likely to be sexually abused than their peers. An estimated 60–70% of children rescued from sex trafficking have spent time in foster care. Within eighteen months of aging out, half become homeless or incarcerated. Youth in foster care are diagnosed with PTSD at twice the rate of U.S. combat veterans (20).

And beneath all of it, a structural reality: families with financial resources can access treatment, support, and stability on their own terms. Families without those resources are the ones who lose their children. As one commentary on the Maryland audit observed: “People with lower incomes are not the only ones in our community who are facing these problems, but they’re the only ones who lose their children because of it.” (21)

Hold these two realities together:

A parent who misses a child support payment faces wage garnishment, license suspension, and jail. The state that places children with sex offenders, fabricates school attendance data, and invents natural disasters to explain its failure to investigate 17,000 abuse allegations faces a fine—and files a corrective action plan.

The parent is held in contempt for failing to meet a financial obligation. The state is held to a corrective action plan for failing to keep children alive.

VI. The Fundamental Contradiction

Authority without accountability has a name in every era. The church called it infallibility. The crown called it divine right. The state calls it sovereign immunity.

The structure is identical: the institution that claims the highest authority over human life grants itself the lowest obligation to answer for its use. The state cannot be sued for its failures unless it consents to be sued (22). The judge who holds the power to dismantle a family is shielded by judicial immunity (23). The caseworker who fails to flag a sex offender in a foster home is protected by qualified immunity unless the failure violates “clearly established” law—and in a system built on undefined terms, almost any decision can be justified after the fact (24).

This is sovereign immunity wearing the vestments of child protection—the same garment the church wore while relocating priests, the same garment the crown wore while taxing colonies. The institution that claims moral authority over the most vulnerable exempts itself from the moral consequences of its own failures. The people harmed by those failures are told to trust the process.

And this is a guarantee of self-destruction, because a system with no corrective mechanism does not stabilize. It deteriorates.

In 2019, the federal government found Maryland out of compliance. The state filed a corrective action plan. The corrective action plan failed. In 2024, the state was fined. In 2025, auditors found children living with sex offenders. Each cycle is worse than the last. Each remedy is absorbed. Each report is filed. The institution continues. The children continue to be harmed.

This is what institutional infallibility produces—guaranteed escalation of failure, because the structure has made it impossible to be corrected by the people closest to the harm.

In every functional system—medicine, finance, engineering—authority and accountability are proportional. A surgeon who holds life-and-death power carries life-and-death liability. A fiduciary who manages your assets is legally bound to act in your interest and can be sued for breach. The greater the power, the greater the obligation to answer for its use. This is the foundational logic of trust.

Family court inverts this entirely. The institution that holds the power to separate a parent from their children, to impose financial obligations enforced by incarceration, to define “stability” and “fitness” and “best interest” without defining those words—this institution answers to no one in the room. The parent, meanwhile, who holds the least structural power, carries the most consequences. Every word scrutinized. Every financial shortfall punishable. Every emotional reaction entered as evidence. Every objection reframed as proof of the instability being alleged.

Authority without accountability is tyranny.

Accountability without authority is servitude.

The family court assigns one to the institution and the other to the parent. This is the fundamental contradiction, and it will continue to produce the outcomes it has always produced—harm to children, destruction of families, erosion of public trust—until the people subject to it refuse to accept it as legitimate.

VII. The Pattern Beyond the Courtroom

This inversion is identical wherever concentrated power meets unaccountable institutions. Ratepayers across thirteen PJM states are absorbing billions in electricity cost increases driven by AI data center buildout they had no voice in approving—the hyperscalers reap the profits, the households bear the cost, the regulators who permitted it face no consequence. The structure is the same in every domain: the entity that benefits claims authority, the entity that bears the cost carries the consequences, and the entity that should enforce accountability exempts itself.

VIII. Judge What’s Real

If you are to judge me, then judge me.

Judge the parent standing in front of you today—the one who showed up, who is asking to be seen, who is telling the truth under oath. Judge the actual capacity, the actual circumstances, the actual relationship between this parent and these children.

The job that once existed, the market that once sustained it, the body that once carried it, the time and resources that were once accessible—these are abstractions. Frozen projections of conditions that have changed. Every parent evaluated against who they used to be—or who the court imagines they should be—is being judged against a phantom.

Every hour spent earning the court-mandated amount is an hour absent from the child the amount supposedly serves. A parent is more than a wage earner. Income is presence withheld. A credit score is a character reference issued by creditors. An address is a coordinate. A schedule is a grid. These are the things the file contains. They are the silhouette of a family, traced by someone who has never entered the room.

How can any citizen accept the verdict of a system that judges a person who does not exist—while ignoring the one speaking?

Every citizen who takes an oath swears to tell the truth. When a parent tells the truth and the court replaces it with an assessment built on undefined terms, outdated assumptions, and abstracted data—the perjury belongs to the institution. The oath belonged to the parent.

IX. The Duty That Returns

There is a belief—held by institutions and enforced through power—that the law belongs to the court. That authority flows downward. That the citizen’s role is compliance and the system’s role is judgment.

The law belongs to the people. The court is its custodian. When the custodian places children with sex offenders, fabricates data to conceal its failures, and shields itself from accountability through the very immunity doctrines it denies to the people it judges—the custodian has broken faith with its mandate.

When a parent stands before that failed custodian and refuses to accept its judgment of a person who does not exist, that parent is honoring the oath the institution abandoned.

The mechanisms for correction exist. Maryland Rule 9-205 already names coercive control. House Bill 1586 would codify it as abuse. Senate Bill 996 would establish independent oversight of the child welfare system through a Child Welfare Ombudsman. Four states have eliminated qualified immunity for government officials who violate constitutional rights in state court (25). The question is whether the people of Maryland will use these instruments—or wait for the next audit to confirm what we already know.

It is our duty—as people, as parents, as caretakers, as citizens—to uphold the law and morality where institutions have failed to do so. The institution is the instrument. The people are the source. When the instrument breaks, the duty does not vanish. It returns to us.

Contact your state legislators today and urge them to pass HB 1586 — which expands the legal definition of abuse to explicitly include coercive control and violations of reproductive autonomy — and SB 996 (Kanaiyah’s Law), which creates an independent Child Welfare Ombudsman with real oversight power.

Everywhere else

The same structural failures exist in family courts and child-welfare systems across the country. You can act where you are:

• Ask your legislators to define vague “best interest of the child” factors in statute, recognize coercive control as abuse in custody and support decisions, and establish (or strengthen) an independent child-welfare ombudsman.

• Demand independent performance audits of your state’s family court and child-welfare agency, modeled on Maryland’s Office of Legislative Audits.

• Support efforts to limit qualified immunity for officials who violate parental rights (Colorado, Montana, Nevada, and New Mexico have already removed it entirely in state court; others are moving).

• Connect with national and state-level reform organizations such as the National Parents Organization (chapters in 28 states working on shared-parenting laws) or ParentalRights.org.
