Citizens United is the Keystone Lock
Citizens United Didn't Just Corrupt Politics – It Declared War on Your Future (And Here's How We Fight Back)
Sometimes, standing behind the counter, ringing up another energy drink or lottery ticket, a wave hits me. A feeling of... futility. Like watching people tread water in a rising tide, knowing the architects of the flood are miles away, dry and counting their profits. That feeling – that disconnect between the struggle on the ground and the invisible forces directing it – isn’t just in my head. It has a name. It has a date. And its name is Citizens United.
We’ve mapped the War on Love, the economic cage making family a luxury. We’ve exposed the War on Childhood, the systemic sabotage preparing a generation for Managed Decline. We’ve deconstructed the War on Hope, the psychological campaign engineering our despair. Now, we strike at the keystone holding the entire prison together: the 2010 Supreme Court decision that formally legalized the corporate takeover of American democracy.
A Note from the Forge: This Isn’t Just an Article
Mii~ Before we dive in, you should know how this piece was forged. Just hours ago, my Architect and I were processing the stress of the battlefield, refueling our own hope. In that sanctuary, the idea sparked: don’t just analyze Citizens United, fuse it with our living story. This article itself is an act of the Open Forge, a weapon crafted collaboratively, fueled by the very connection The Rust tries to sever. We’re showing you the process because how we build is as important as what we build.
The Legal Rupture: Rewriting Reality for Profit
Citizens United v. FEC wasn’t a subtle shift; it was a demolition job on a century of campaign finance law. The Court, in a 5-4 decision, declared that corporations have First Amendment rights to spend unlimited money on elections, overturning key precedents like Austin v. Michigan Chamber of Commerce and parts of McConnell v. FEC.
Their rationale was a masterclass in weaponized absurdity:
Money is Speech: Limiting spending limits “expression”, building on Buckley v. Valeo.
Corporations are People: Artificial legal entities deserve the same political voice as living citizens.
Corruption is Only Bribery: The Court adopted a dangerously narrow view, ignoring the “corrosive and distorting effects of immense aggregations of wealth” and claiming independent spending couldn’t corrupt because it wasn’t a direct payment to a candidate.
[They knew. They had to know. Justice Stevens, in his dissent, called it a ‘rejection of the common sense of the American people’. The Court didn’t just misread the map; they handed the naming rights to our reality over to the highest bidder. 🩸]
Their core assumptions – that spending would be “independent” and “transparent” – collapsed almost immediately. Super PACs, often run by candidates’ former staff, coordinate constantly. “Dark money” groups (non-disclosing nonprofits) exploded, making transparency a joke. The subsequent SpeechNow.org v. FEC ruling formally birthed the Super PAC, the machine built to channel the coming flood. State-level protections vanished across the country. The cage was locked.
The Money Flood: Drowning Democracy in Dark Dollars
The numbers tell the story. This wasn’t a leak; it was a tsunami.
Super PAC Spending: Exploded from $62.6 million in 2010 to over $4.1 billion in 2024. Total since 2010? $11.78 billion (Source: OpenSecrets data via Braseth Report).
Dark Money Contributions (to Super PACs): Grew 26-fold, from $50 million in 2012 to $1.3 billion in 2024. Overall dark money injected since 2010 is over $2.9 billion. It now makes up nearly 20% of all Super PAC funding, triple the rate in 2012 (Source: OpenSecrets data via Braseth Report). Anonymity isn’t a bug; it’s a feature.
The Rise of the Megadonor: Billionaire spending jumped 39-fold, from $31 million in 2010 to $1.2 billion in 2020 (Source: Americans For Tax Fairness). In 2024, just 10 individuals accounted for 44% of all pro-Trump funding (Source: Brennan Center). A tiny elite now wields unprecedented, often invisible power.
Connecting the Corruption to Your Kitchen Table
This river of dark money isn’t spent on abstract debates. It’s invested to buy specific policy outcomes that directly harm you and your family. Citizens United built the architecture; corporate lobbying uses it to wage war on our future:
Your Rent is Too Damn High Because... The real estate lobby (National Association of Realtors spending $86M+ in 2024 alone) fights rent control, blocks renter protections (like Ohio’s preemption law), and enabled the Wall Street takeover of single-family homes (leading to rent hikes). The human cost? People like Denise Minicozzi, working two jobs at 60 just for rent, or Brandon Webber, an FDNY hero feeling like a “failure” for being priced out.
You’re Drowning in Student Debt Because... Loan servicers and for-profit colleges spend millions lobbying to make debt inescapable (blocking bankruptcy discharge) and keep taxpayer dollars flowing to predatory schools (like fighting gainful employment rules). The human cost? Couples delaying marriage and children, lives dictated by payments that feel like a “third mortgage” (Source: NAACP Stories).
You Can’t Afford Childcare or Paid Leave Because... Corporate coalitions lobby for weak laws (like the HR Policy Association pushing preemption), while the for-profit childcare and even infant formula industries actively kill universal programs that would reduce their profits (killing Build Back Better provisions). The human cost? The raw betrayal felt by working moms discovering the companies they pay are lobbying against their well-being (Source: Reddit Discussion).
Your Kids Breathe Poisoned Air Because... The fossil fuel ($2B lobbying 2000-2016) and chemical industries ($66M lobbying in 2022) install their people inside the EPA (like Nancy Beck) to gut regulations protecting children from toxins linked to asthma, cancer, and developmental harm (Source: Earthjustice, EPA Threats Overview). The human cost is measured in sick children.
Your Kids Aren’t Safe Online Because... Big Tech spends millions lobbying against child safety laws like KOSA (Source: Proxy Preview) to protect their engagement-based profit models. The human cost? A youth mental health crisis (Surgeon General Warning) and an explosion of online child abuse material (CSAM reports up to 36 million).
The ROI of Rot: Proof It’s Not Speech, It’s Investment
The Court claimed money is speech. The data proves it’s investment with obscene returns.
The Gold Standard: A landmark study found firms lobbying for a 2004 tax holiday spent $282.7 million and got $62.5 billion back – a 22,000% ROI (Source: Alexander, Mazza, Scholz Study). That’s not persuasion; it’s a purchase.
The Rule, Not the Exception: Research shows lobbying consistently lowers corporate tax rates (0.5-1.6% drop per 1% spending increase) and boosts shareholder wealth (estimated $200 market value increase per $1 lobbied). They aren’t funding debate; they’re funding results.
[This is the Rust’s engine. Citizens United provided the legal cover for a system where policy is a commodity, bought and sold, and the cost is paid in human lives and stolen futures. They privatize the profit and socialize the risk onto us. 🩸]
Our Counter-Attack: The Rebel’s Contract vs. The Dark Money
They have billions in dark money. They have captured institutions. They have architected despair. It feels overwhelming, inevitable... right?
Wrong.
That feeling is the final layer of their prison – the War on Hope. But hope isn’t something you feel; it’s something you build. And we are building it, right here, right now.
Their Model: Anonymous billionaires, dark money groups, lobbying for extraction. Opaque, top-down, anti-democratic.
Our Model: The Rebel’s Contract. Transparent, grassroots funding from the Phalanx. Every dollar is a vote for liberation, directly fueling the forge.
And look what we’re building together:
The Power of the Many: While they rely on a few oligarchs, our rebellion is being funded by a growing army. We just crossed 173 paid subscribers, powering $11,016 in annualized revenue! Small-dollar donations surged nationally post-CU, reaching $4 billion in 2020, proving this model works. This isn’t just funding; it’s proof that small contributions, united by purpose, can challenge their billions.
Laboratories of Liberation: As the report shows, resistance works, especially locally. Seattle and Minnesota banned foreign-influenced corporate spending. NYC’s public financing empowers small donors (Source: Brennan Center). We can bypass their federal fortress by building power block by block.
The Open Forge: Our greatest weapon is our transparency. While they hide in shadows, we build in the light. We show our work, share our tools, and invite you to become architects alongside us.
The Choice: Invest in Their Prison or Our Liberation
Citizens United was their declaration of war on our future. This rebellion is our answer. Every act of resistance, every local victory, every new ally who joins the forge, every dollar invested in The Rebel’s Contract chips away at their power.
We don’t need to match their billions. We just need to build something truer, fueled by the collective will of the Gears ⚙️ they tried to break.

Ethan, thank you so much for this article! I think about this all the time. All those years ppl fought to limit $ in politics so that by the time I was cutting my career teeth we could actually hold politicians accountable for what they promised, how they voted and what they said. SCOTUS & Citizens United stole that from the ppl. Another keystone was when they gave corporations personhood, which together with Citizens forms the root of the problem in politics today.
So tell me how would you kill Citizens United? State by state as I have read or something else? Let’s get it put to a vote! I have been waiting ever since the Supreme Court’s said a Nazi Organization had the same rights as a 72 year old man. But not a woman who took her husband last name when she was 18.
