I have a friend who is suddenly being charged a $125/month “Concierge Trash Fee”. Instead of taking garbage to the bin, tenants LEAVE IT IN THE HALLWAY ALL DAY, and someone comes to pick it up later.
Unsanitary, smelly, verminous … but there IS NO OPT-OUT.
Somewhat tangential, though emblematic of the same problem: the mobile home park situation.
Around a year ago, I was going through separation and needed to find new accommodations. I live in the Midwest, where housing prices are arguably better than most of the country, by and large. I had owned a home, until it was sold in favor of keeping my now-ex’s less desirable property.
I did NOT want to return to renting. Even before the situation became as abusive as it now is, I have always felt that renting is nothing more than throwing money into a hole.
So I decided to look into purchasing a mobile home. Initially I was excited by the prospect of having my own space, though small, for something like 50-70K.
Then it was time to starting to cost accounting, and that’s where I finally get to my point. XD
The lot rent, in a rural area of the Midwest, was going to be over $900 per month. Just the lot rent. For the mortgage-familiar, that might cause a bit of a double take. Or it ought to. It brings the total cost of living in a trailer park (assuming you want to own your home itself) to something like $1400 dollars per month.
In Nowheresville, USA.
Why?
Because all of these parks have been gobbled up by corporations to contribute to this emergent national trend of “rent control” in favor of the landlords. Though of course, rather than acting to keep prices down, this version of rent control is designed to keep the cost of living at a steady incline.
And wages barely move. The last 4 years of my 14 year employment, in a moderately high level tech job (as a senior systems administrator) saw never more than a 1.5% annual salary increase. One of those years did was nothing at all.
This problem is absolutely emdemic to capitalism. Profit is all. Abuse and corruption percolate and drift upward, while the good people, who don’t want to compromise their ideals, start to drown in the rising tide.
Because while the rising tide lifts all ships, the Rust is making sure that none of us have boats. Only anchors.
Definitely RESTACKED ,I heard this on 60 minutes. And found the collusion for disgusting profits by "hedge funds" and algorithms( as the bought independent apt. buildings) illegal⚠️💸 They have no conscience 🗿
